Thug U is done.

Quote from shaggybevo poster pretty well sums it up
Quote
Yeah I don't know how anyone could say this isn't a 10, unless they want to say it's a 20.

Yahoo has a separate page posted for every single athlete that received "benefits", detailing what was provided, backing that up with receipts, corroborating those stories with other eyewitness accounts, etc etc.

Usually stories leak out and there's enough plausible deniability to cloud the issue and maybe chuck up enough noise that people never fully grasp the scope. This is a fucking encyclopedia of corruption, with receipts.

I've seen the "10" reference thrown around in a few different places and have no clue what it means.  Any idea?

EDIT: Never mind, figured it out.

For sports in the US, yes.  ESPN has redefined themselves as a promotion service, although I'm sure they'd disagree.  SI doesn't quite have the manpower or desire for hard hitting investigative work.  I'm not sure the Sporting News still exists.  Yahoo! has the desire to fill the niche, and I think they've done well over the past 24 months with it.

THE Ohio State University might disagree with you.

But yes, Yahoo! is kicking ass and taking names on their Sports coverage.

I may be in the minority here, but the majority of these violations don't really bother me.  Cam Newton requesting a large cash payment to attend school?  Yeah, that bothers me and undermines the integrity of college sports, imo.

A sleezeball mini-Napoleon crook throwing petty cash here and there at college kids that largely come from lower income backgrounds to facilitate their party in Miami is unpalatable, but the practice is probably fairly ubiquitous at the large programs.

To the extent that coaches were knowing participants/enablers, those coaches should be fired and never work in the NCAA again.

The major allegations in the report weren't shocking.  In fact, I would be more surprised to hear that it didn't happen at a school like "the U."  Unfortunately for that particular program, this guy got pinched and feels that his "family" of former Miami players deserted him, which only show how much of an insecure loser this guy was in the first place.

Maybe my jaded opinion is just a reflection of the unfortunate state of college sports in this country though.

Go check out the bounties.  Thats fucked up.

Also, unlimited supply of booze and hookers is probably a pretty effective recruiting pitch.

A player knocked up a hooker, and a booster paid for her abortion without telling the player because "he'd just do something idiotic like keep the kid".

If that's not shocking, then you're far more jaded then I ever care to be.

I didn't see the part about the bounties, but, yes, agreed on that point.

From several D1 recruits spanning a few decades, I have been regaled with stories of basically unlimited booze and sluts (pro or otherwise) on the recruiting trail.  Perhaps that's just become a myth that they feel as though they have to substantiate in retrospect to justify their "blue chip status," but likely not.  If it's sanctioned by the school, that's one thing.  But, most of the time, that's just undergrads convincing other undergrads to come to their school.  The experience for a lot of non-athletes isn't all that different, probably just with cheaper booze and uglier coeds.

This topic borders on a political debate that there's no point in discussing.

The facts of this story are these:
1) a sleazy booster paid for a prostitute for a player (not shocking)
2) as a result of sexual intercourse, the woman was impregnated (not shocking except for the brilliance of not using a contraceptive with a prostitute)
3) The sleazy booster acted without the player's knowledge to pay for an abortion for a hooker (this has no relevance to the player or the university.  Just another shady act by a guy who has an extensive track record of scumbaggery.)

Or a 2 for 1.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

I don't see how this isn't much, much worse than SMOO. If it can be shown that coaches were aware of this stuff and did nothing to stop it when they knew it wasn't allowed, and the NCAA doesn't issue the death penalty, then they lose massive amounts of credibility. On one of the ESPN news broadcasts on Saturday, somebody said that a source or two from the NCAA has already commented that this is far worse than SMU's violations. (Sorry to be so vague, but I was in the middle of driving home from vacation and wasn't paying as much attention as I would've been if I were plunked on my couch.)

Same show, they talked about how devastating the death penalty was and unlikely to ever be used again.  This will surely test that out.

To what end, is the question.  They didn't intend to so massively destroy the athletic department for several generations.  They honestly thought two years without football could be recoverable.  It wasn't.

It is, but I believe they found it to be more devastating than they intended. They wanted to suspend football for a little bit; they got complete destruction and a decade before it was struggling to its feet.

Doesn't part of the decade long destruction have to do with the nature of the typical SMU grad?  I've never met many that cared that much about football.  I figured that blip in the eighties was pretty much due to the desire of a select and powerful few, rather than the SMU fanbase as a whole.

I don't think so, no. It killed their ability to attract players, coaches, boosters, to set up and maintain an infrastructure, etc. Few wanted to go there or to be associated with the only school that ever got their football program shut down for that scandal.

SMU had a very good football history in the SWC and had a base that hungered for that return so much that they would do anything to support it. There has been a clear break since then and that's a shame. The death penalty is bigger than people thought it would be.

Heard Les Miles comments after 4 players (including his starting QB) were arrested in a bar fight they allegedly started (they smuck out after curfew.)  Miles said he was sure the players knew they did wrong and wouldn't do anything like it again, especially after he gave them a talking to.

Now there is talk of suspending the players for the season opener, vs. Oregon.  Nothing against LSU specifically, but does Miles really think these guys are just sheepish schoolboys who will mind their manners now?  Also, reportedly "dozens" of players snuck out, thses guys were just the ones who got caught.

Kids used to be responsible for their own debauchery.  Now they expect someone to do it for them.  Get off of my lawn.

There aren't any lawns with grass on them these days.

That really surprises me. I expected a message that the NCAA gave a shit.

Done = Slap on the wrist in NCAA speak.

Nope.  Those players all turned in evidence.  Read the report - the have confirmed that amember of the athletic staff was Shapiro's "bag man".  The  players get minimal suspensions in exchange for confirming the evidence against the program.

Yeah, I saw this as addressing the immediate problem of active players who received benefits.  They will deal with the larger problem later.  Maybe.

Yessir. The death hammer looks like it will happen. This is the big problem with players getting money under the current rules where an athletic department person is aware of it and condones it. When the shit hits the fan, the players will lawyer up and give up the institution in exchange for lighter sentences.
