Houston Restaurant Weeks

It's that time of year again.

http://www.houstonrestaurantweeks.com/

Great way to try out different restaurants and help the food bank.

I heartily recommend Antica Osteria on that list.  A proper* Italian restaurant, IMHO.

* Not a pasta joint with a couple of grilled chicken dishes.

I've driven past a dozen times but never been inside.  I'll have to change that soon.

It's especially nice when the weather is cool and you can sit outside.  Do you think they can work that in for August?

Separate, related story:

Was at Max's Wine Dive on Saturday.  Took your suggestion to request the foie gras in lieu of bacon on the fried egg sandwich.

The server brought it to my table, said "Who added the foie gras?" followed by "You're a badass."

FTR, that was Alkie's suggestion, not mine.  In opposite news, I ate at Ruggles Green on Saturday; very nice.

My mistake.

Ruggles Green is a go-to for us.

Same - pick up from there every week or two.  Everything is pretty solid.  Top tier sweet potato fries, IMO.

I've lived down the street from Antica for almost 3 years and still haven't tried it.  This is a good reason to.

And Ruggles Green is awesome.  I've been more inclined to go there over Ruggles Cafe lately.  They're sloppy southwestern chicken sandwich (or whatever it is) is fantastic.

FTR, I said I added foie gras on top of the bacon, I didn't say anything about "substituting."    Go back and try it again with a glass of champagne as the pairing.

Speaking of Italian...my favorite Italian place, Via Emilia, recently opened a second restaurant in the Woodlands. Went to the original last week for my anniversary...Mrs. Hawk lives for the black pasta and swears their pasta fagioli is the only thing that comes close to her grandmother's (plus the have home made lemoncello).  At any rate, their grilled gorganzola pear with balsamic is the single best food product I've ever eaten, but last week I decided to try their gorganzola stuffed figs (I love figs). While not quite the pear, it was outstanding.  Oh, and I had the lobster ravioli for my entree. Outstanding as well.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

As an aside, I had the Rabelais roast chicken sandwich Friday at lunch.  Outstanding.

I was going to ask why the bacon was forsaken.  But at the time I didn't want to rhyme.

Since we are talking best italian (we are, aren't we?), has anyone been to Vinoteca Poscol? I am not a huge fan of italian food but it was the best I have ever had.

I've been there a couple of times.  It's the taverna kind-o-place owned by the owner of DaMarcos, which is my vote for the best-place-in-Houston-but-too-damned-expensive-to-actually-eat-at restaurant.  We've never really gotten past appetizers and a bottle of wine at Poscol, but I've always enjoyed it, particularly the house-made sausage plate.

Ditto.  Loved the atomosphere and the red wine risotto.  Made for a great post-opera dinner.

For Italian, lately we've been going pretty often to Buon Appettito, which is the white house with azure trim on the south side of Holcombe between Main and Greenbriar.  You've passed it exactly 57 times in the last year and thought, what is that building a front for?  Here's a link:

http://buonappetitohouston.com/history.php

The guy playing the guitar in the picuture (not that picture, the other one) is Tino Cantu, who's in his 80s, and who comes to our table and helps himself to our wine.  Tino plays classical guitar by ear, which is mighty odd.  We trade songs for an hour or so, and sometimes Tino will go off and grab somebody to come hear me play, and sometimes I invite people from other tables to come hear Tino play.  It's all very . . . I dunno, entertaining, and the food is much better than I ever would have expected.  I suspect it's more authentic in it's way than a lot of stuff in Houston Italian restaurants.

Tino's very proud of his guitar, and he should be.  He went from New Orleans to Mexico City in 1964 to buy the guitar from the maker, Juan Pimentel.  He says his is number 64, and Segovia bought number 65, and Segovia's is in the Smithsonian.  Or something.

Don't talk too loud though, cause it annoys Tino.
