Here's what's worse: I can't argue that it's the wrong decision.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

Happ's pitching, so Ted Williams could be batting third and it wouldn't much matter.

These guys need to be left alone for a while.  Hell, it's got to be hard enough adjusting to the majors without being moved around constantly.

Why isn't Shuck in the lineup?

Nibble, nibble, nibble, walk.

Single, run scoring double. 1-0 without an out in the game.

Not a great start here.  I had higher expectations for Happ this year, not unrealistic ones, but better than this.

This seems to HAPPen every 5th game.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Lot of sink on that throw from Barmes, but Carlos has to make the catch.

I'm good-went to an NA meeting today.

You know, I've been meaning to ask you about this. Without exception every friend I have in a 12-step program considers NA totally useless and attend AA meetings instead. I'm thinking especially of two friends each of whom had serious problems with narcotics and neither found anything in NA for them but instead attend AA meetings daily. They each have told me that they consider NA attendees unserious and not committed particularly to recovery. You go so obviously you've found a meeting that works for you, but have you noticed a discernable difference between NA and AA?

It depends upon the meeting that you go to as well as the geographical area you're in-when I was in Louisiana, I went to AA meetings because the NA meetings where I was sucked. Here, there is a very strong recovery community in NA. I would vehemently disagree with your friends about NA. I know people who have stayed clean for 40 years in NA alone. Sure, you have lots of brokedicks in both fellowships who are there just because of a court requirement. Few of those folks are serious about it, and even fewer stay clean. My sponsor, clean for 16 years, is damn serious about it, as are all of my friends here who are in NA. I work steps, attend several meetings per week, am of service to NA and now also sponsor people.

Of course you know that I am not suggesting that NA is not effective or that people shouldn't pursue it. I'm simply conveying the remarks and attitudes of a number of people I know who have tried both.

I'll bet that's what they mean, though, that NA has a higher percentage of people who are there by court order and not because of a personal compulsion to be there and that dilutes the experience.

I do know that different meetings have (sometimes dramatically) different personalities and that certain meetings work for some and not for others. I'm glad you found a meeting you like so much.

I know what you meant. I've heard some of the same criticisms before. Actually, I've been going for so long now that I can put up with any shitty meeting, even one where we're taken hostage by someone who is pissing and moaning about their condition in life but not talking about the solution. I'm all about the solution. It's my problem, and it's my responsibility. I attend three to four meetings a week, one of which has no newcomers. It's a meditation meeting, and it is my favorite meeting.

@zacharylevine: J.A. Happ is now the first Astros pitcher ever to allow 5+ runs in eight consecutive starts.

That's a much neater way to say what Hap and I have been discussing, yes. I remember a story about a clique at an NA meeting who would go drinking after the meetings. That's definitely not the crowd my friends are looking for.

I attend one men's meeting and like it, but I think that co-ed meetings are best and most in keeping with the NA traditions. Women feel more comfortable at women's meetings though. I think that the behavior at men's meetings sometimes leaves something to be desired unless there is a contingent of old-timers who don't cotten to that shit. In our meditation meeting, we pick a topic out of the NA basic text and read a couple of pages on the topic, and then meditate for 12 minutes before opening the floor to sharing. When I first started going years ago, I couldn't meditate for two minutes much less 12. However, now, I love that 12 minute respite and it always ends before I'm ready. I get a lot of peace and serenity from it.

In baseball news, Happ will lose more than 20 games with an ERA of above 6 unless management intervenes.

Those people were not honoring the NA rules, because alcohol is a drug, as our basic text clearly states. I've heard plenty of people who were in AA but were continuing to use drugs before coming to NA. It all depends. I love NA. It saved my life. Literally.

Today, you're more right than not. I agree that he isn't fooling anyone tonight. However, he's still pitching up in the zone more than he should, and those are the pitches that he's given up basehits on.

I know that "AA" is an acronym for "Alcoholics Anonymous". Is "NA" an acronym for "Narcotics Anonymous"? Sorry for the dumbass question.

That's a much neater way to say what Hap and I have been discussing, yes. I remember a story about a clique at an NA meeting who would go drinking after the meetings. That's definitely not the crowd my friends are looking for.

Yeah, I mean my buddy was a recovering heroin addict, but even though he had committed to kicking the drug (it was his second time in recovery after staying clean for a couple of years) he still smoked weed and wouldn't turn down a beer if a Horns football game was on. That's a very different profile than most people I've known who've gone to AA.

He wasn't really in recovery. Marijuana is a drug too.

ETA, in proof of my point, look at the pitch sequence in this long AB by McGhee. When you're throwing 89-91 in the upper half of the zone, you're playing with fire.

Totally. One of my friends was a full-on junkie and tried NA and just didn't get what he needed there, or at least at the meetings he attended. He shifted to AA and found what he was looking for. He doesn't smoke weed or anything else and certainly does not drink although I never knew him to have any real issue with alcohol. As Hap says, it's meant to be a total commitment.

You're not even playing. You're just lighting matches and throwing them on the side of the road.

His secondary pitches are weak.  His fastball is good enough to set up other pitches, it is just that there aren't any other pitches. They square up his curve and change. He throws a change on pitch 13 and it has no effect.

I didn't post well. Happ is not pitching well. I had been defending him, but he is not doing that tonight. I agree with you, finally. It isn't pitching down in the zone, it is not having the stuff to pitch anywhere around the zone.

Addiction is a hard concept for me to understand in some ways. The friend I'm referring to had a couple of major obsessions that he couldn't control-- heroin and chubby men, as funny as that sounds. He was a fairly mellow guy otherwise, had no problem drinking only a beer or two during a football game and stopping, smoked weed but in relative moderation. Conversely, I had a cousin who was an alcoholic who couldn't say no to ANYTHING, and it ultimately killed him.

It's certainly more interesting than watching Happ get his brains beat out.

I've always wondered what the succession plan is for the Black Tie Gala. I mean, I think that Keppinger's wife was the lead on that this year, and then all of a sudden they find themselves in San Francisco. What kind of transfer takes place there?

On the bright side - the astros may be historically bad and on track to easily set the franchise loss record, but college football starts in less than a month!

In NA, we focus on addiction generally, and not just to drugs either. When I got here, as some of you no doubt remember, I was a very angry person. I was addicted to the rush of anger outbursts. We deal with people who are addicted to gambling, shopping, lying, etc.

An unlikely combination to be sure, but I'm pretty sure there are bars dedicated to that theme in the Castro.

I'm sure there's something somewhere, but the Castro has notoriously become dominated by wealthy gay men rather than being the all-inclusive utopia that it perhaps was once earmarked to be.

My friend was a trip, btw. He had a steady, long-term relationship with an Arkansas truck driver named Bud, but would periodically cheat whenever he encountered another of his favored type. He had a shoebox stacked full of (mostly SFW) photos of different chubby guys he'd dated over the years. Crazy and kind-of hilarious-- picture the most stereotypical truck driver you can think of and that's his ideal.

Stepfan is a beast - he'll be 1A this year in a backfield by committee.

Pacbell is awesome - best MLB park I have been to.

Jane - don't worry, INO is coming. Much better than WB

I thought the same thing about Bogey's similar catch earlier. Not that he wouldn't have tried like hell, it's just that he would have set off running the wrong way for three steps or so.

Since we're talking about food, I usually buy my briskets at Costco because they're Choice and every one I've bought from them has come out great. Couple of weeks ago I was in HEB and they were something like $1.48 a pound so I looked and in the bin, mixed in with the dozen or so Select graded ones, were four CAB Choice briskets and 2-3 Excel Choice ones. I was stunned; evidently they do this from time to time. FYI.

I didn't; didn't have refrigerator or freezer space and I was still holding one I'd bought a week before. I never freeze the uncooked ones - they're good in the cryovac in the refrigerator for at least 30-45 days although I've never held one longer than three weeks.

After cooking them, if you wrap them right, you can store them for up to six months but that's really pushing it. I don't like to hold anything longer than three months in the freezer.

When I worked in restaurants that was the job I hated the most, cleaning shrimp. 20+ pounds at a time, in five-pound frozen blocks, thawing in near-freezing slushy water so your hands are frozen and you're prying a block of ice apart, plus you're using a sharp knife. Ugh.

Very occasionally. It's overpriced and a tourist trap, like V Sattui-my wife, who's quite a wine enthusiast and very knowledgeable about it, says their wines suck.

It's a good burger, but it's a $12 burger, so it damn sure better be good.

I bet I clean five to eight pounds of shrimp every week. Of course they're enormous so we're talking about six or eight a pound and they are certainly not frozen.

These were about U16N so probably about 40-50. Harder than you'd think to find head on here (these were frozen)

It was the frozen and slushy water that made it so rotten of a job. Your hands are numb, so you can't feel much, but you can't really control the knife all that well either, and everything you touch is ice cold...

Perfect. Just what I needed after being in a car for 13+ hours with an emotional wreck.

But you didn't have to watch it. And you missed all the great commercials.

It looked like a great trip, sorry the last part was a little difficult.

Rather wishing the one we picked up in Boston had flown back. She's been uber-sensitive.   It rubs off on the rest of us.

I did get a bad-add tan in pensacola. I'm ready to go back there or Virginia beach.
