When does Sanchez get a break? Should talk begin on dropping Lee down in the order?

Pitching to contact is a much better gambit with Bourn in the game.

Bourgois is a perfectly acceptable centerfielder. But he's no Michael Bourn.

Perzackly. He's just a step or so slower and we can see it because we see Bourn every day.

Boojwah in LF and Bourn in CF makes the outfield pretty small for the other team.

I don't want to join the crowd bitching about Bill Hall but if he hadn't hesitated at the plate after hitting that one he would've been safe at second.

Perhaps.  But I like him being aggressive trying to get in scoring postion.

If the Padres don't score here, Patterson needs to have the shit stomped out of him.

I know you're going to tell me I'm wrong but I simply don't think it's a foregone conclusion that he would have scored had he not taken a little break on second. Michaels played that ball as well as anyone could play it and I think there would have been a very close play at the plate.

Pence's throwing motion looks like he's had shoulder surgery. It's just weird.

From a personal message from Pence's mom:

Quote
His funky throwing motion developed due to an injury to his shoulder while racing down a hill at a Ranger game on a dare.  He fell while running full speed down a grassy hill and separated his shoulder.
He tried to hide the injury, however it was very apparent that something was wrong.  I think that it has taken until about 3 years ago for his arm to feel good to him.  Throwing long toss with his brother finally improved his arm strength significantly.  Of course the Astros worked with him also.

Running on the pitch?  I think if he keeps running, there's no way they throw him out at the plate.  He should have been nearly to 3B by the time the ball hit the ground.

Bourgois is a better baserunner than Bourn, but Bourn is faster.  Bourn would be unbelievable if he learned to get a jump.

I never thought he didn't try hard.

I don't remember seeing him diving around as much as he has in the last week or so. Last year he caught holy hell at the beginning of the season for being indifferent in the field.

Right.  I think that holy hell was unfair.

I agree.  I think Lee has a very good glove, even if he's range challenged.

He's surprisingly good at first. He would make an AL team very, very happy.

The LEX lineup looks like it could be pretty potent... As does the rotation. Nice to see Dydalewicz with a decent start the other night as well.

Not the caliber of Hugo's, but there's a placed called Guyaba up in the Willowbrook area that ain't half bad.  Spanish/Cuban, and their mojitos are pretty damn good.

They have a cold table, a hot line, and a dessert spread - what I can remember from today -

Cold: guacamole, salsas crudas, one ceviche + one coctele de camaron, huitlacoche stuffed zucchini, nopales salad, marinated mushrooms and marinated chiles - there is more but you get the idea

Hot line: sopa de albondigas, sopes, quesadillas, chilaquiles, caulifolwer coated with egg, green chile quail, red chile braised brisket, carnitas (sometimes they have roast suckling pig but not today), chile rellenos, seafood enchiladas + rice, beans, etc.

Dessert - churros, tres leches, mango cheesecake and a bunch of other tortes - I didn't have dessert so I don't remember these as well

I probably remembered about 60-70 percent of what's out there - pretty nice spread

Hot: corn pudding, chicken/mushroom tamales, vegetable torta, some kind of quiche

Dessert - dulce de leche brownie/fudge, bread pudding, dulce de leche cookie, plantains, strawberry choc cake, coconut pie, rice pudding, fruit, chocolate cookies, espresso cheesecake and flan

Anyways, highly recommend it - need reservations

Melancon isn't anywhere near the plate. This doesn't smell good at all.

JD implied a great point about not having to blindly go with your 8th inning guy especially if hes relatively unproven like melancon

Nash hits another HR.  3 HRs in his forst 15 ABs this year

Wallace and Nash both go yard - AGAIN - in T7 (2B, 3 HR each, Nash with a 1B as well. WOW!).

I can't fault Jason for being over-agressive there, especially when he saw the zone expanding like it did. The errors, though, those are another matter. There was some serious Little League shit out there today. When the Astros score six runs they need to win every time.

I didn't see the whole game. Was Towles used earlier, then? I was thinking, Inglett for Bourgeous, Bourn to CF, Downs to 1B, Inglett to 2B? Just puzzled, I'm not stamping my feet calling Mills a moron or anything.

I didn't see the whole game. Was Towles used earlier, then? I was thinking, Inglett for Bourgeous, Bourn to CF, Downs to 1B, Inglett to 2B? Just puzzled, I'm not stamping my feet calling Mills a moron or anything.

Towles is still hurt from fouling a ball off of his foot. He might be ready Tuesday.

Why would you pinch hit Inglett for Bourgeois?

Inglett bats LH, Bell is a nasty RHP. Inglett is also a proven PH, so it's not like just throwing any LHB up there to face a tough pitcher.

Inglett's hitting .154.  Bourgeois is hitting over .300, and had four at bats already today.  It makes no sense to me whatsoever to pinch hit for Bourgeois.

Look. I'm not saying it makes no sense whatsoever to let Bourgeois hit there. I trust that Brad Mills has a better idea than me about the capabilities of his hitters in certain situations. Maybe Inglett had a stiff back or something and wasn't really available, or there's something else that made Mills think he wasn't the best bet vs. Bell. Or he just felt like Inglett's not swinging the bat well at the moment, yesterday's PH notwithstanding.

But are you really serious that it makes no sense to you to have Inglett, a LHB with a .283 career AVG, pinch-hit for Bourgeois, a RHB with a .224 career AVG? None whatsoever? The "by the book" move in that situation is clearly to get a lefty PH up there, and I'm simply curious why Mills didn't go by the book in this instance.

To me, none whatsoever.  It may have made all the sense in the world to you, but I'd have screamed bloody murder had Inglett hit for Bourgeois in that spot.

OK, that's cool. I guess I'm still a little unclear as to why. Is it just that you feel like right now, Bourgeois is looking better in his ABs? I didn't see JB's first few ABs of this game, and I've only seen a few of Inglett's this season, so I don't know how to compare them that way, just in terms of what they've done in their careers. Inglett led the league in pinch-hits last year, so to me he seems like a good option in those situations if he's not in a slump.

Pinch hitting is one of the hardest jobs in baseball. HH is right--absent a very compelling reason to pinch hit for one has been hitting, you don't.

Further to the point of possibly pinch hitting for Bourgeois with Inglett, who would have played CF had the Astros tied the game? Bourn had already been used.

Bourn would have moved to CF, since he had pinch run for Wallace.  I was hoping to see Michaels at 1st if there was a tie.  Pence - RF, Bourn - CF, Bourgeouis - LF, Johnson - 3rd, Sanchez - SS, Downs - 2nd, and Michaels 1B.  Q - Catcher.  I think that was the final 9 minus the pitcher.

No, Bourn was in the game, the runner at 2nd. So he could've gone to CF with Downs and Inglett taking 1B and 2B. Man, I realize I must sound like a crazed Joe Inglett fanatic (or at least his dad); I never meant for this one minor question to result in this many posts.

I stand corrected.
