True, he's no Bagwell.

Agreed, but you can't expect Wallace to be as great a baserunner as Bagwell.

Unlike some other first basemen in memory Wallace does not strike me as an idiot so yes, I believe he can and will improve here.

I tell you what, Sanchez is a better defensive player than I thought he was. I thought he was below average but he is not.

I dunno. They could *possibly* hold on to a 1-run lead, but 4-run leads scare the crap outta me...

Nice comeback there Mr. Abad!

Pitcher's best friend.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Dammit Bourn.  He threw you 4 straight pitches in the exact same spot...and you swung at the 4th.

HH -  you have seen a lot more baseball than me - have you ever seen the tying run move to third with less than 2 outs on a strikeout-passed ball?

I've seen runners advance like that many times.  Don't remember if they were the tying run or not.  BTW, that was not a passed ball.

How about the Pad's starter who's now 0-3 with a 1.83 ERA and 0.00 run support.

He is Danny DeVito to Jeriome Robertson's Schwarzenneger.

Unlike some other first basemen in memory Wallace does not strike me as an idiot so yes, I believe he can and will improve here.

I tell you what, Sanchez is a better defensive player than I thought he was. I thought he was below average but he is not.

What's interesting is that before last year I think he was known for damn good defense and not much stick.  Looks like he may have figured it out at the plate.  That's a pretty good return for Cash by Wade.

That was an extremely fun ballgame to watch.

Great jobs by Melancon and Norris, Lyon looked sharp, great DP turn by Bill Hall, even the hitters didn't look too bad overall despite the 1 run tally.

Did Q's glove really make contact with Patterson's bat on that play? He had one of those "you have got to be shitting me" grins on his face... I suppose it could've been a "damn, thought he wouldn't notice that" look too though.

I'm just reading about Melancon's at-bat.  Did he swing at any pitches?

Yes. Melancon fouled off several pitches.

I think it was more of a commentary on how late Patterson's swing was, and how he leaned back into Q because of it.  That's the irony of catcher's intereference...typically if the bat hits the catcher's mitt, it's because there's no chance of it actually putting the ball in play.  You're rewarding the batter for a ridiculously horrible swing.

You're correct. I never liked that call. Supposedly it is to keep catchers from reaching into the batter's area and stealing a hittable ball. Catchers are intrepid souls-I worked with lots of them. But they are far from stupid. I don't know of any catchers who would put their mitt hands at risk that way.

I've been hit with the bat numerous times.  Sometimes it just clips the web and nothing, other times it hits you square in the back of the hand and you can't feel it for three days.  The rule is a good one. I understand why it's needed.  It's just that there is no corresponding rule that says the hitter can't step backward or lean back and try to hit the ball once it's nearly in the mitt, so for all practical purposes, the rule rewards a clueless hitter on a good pitch he wouldn't otherwise hit.

Having been raised on baseball, that was one of the most fascinating aspects of cricket when I first encountered it. Wait a minute: you can hit the ball backwards?

You can hit it backwards, but you can make an out back there too.

Interesting are the 2 careers of CJ and Downs.

Both about the samge age.

Downs drafted out of high school (25th round 2003 draft, did not sign)
CJ not drafted out of high school

Both drafted in 2006.  CJ drafted in the 4th round, Downs in the 36th round.

Downs started a level lower than CJ in the minors but after dominating the lower levels skipped AA catching up with CJ.
Both have extremely similar numbers in AAA

Both cracked the majors in 2009, both did very little then

In 2010:
CJ started ice cold in April, came back in June got red hot for 8 games, went Ice cold for 7 games then played well the rest of the year
Downs was called up in Late April was red hot for 13 games, went ice cold for 7 games, went 3 for 5 with a walk, then was sent to the bench, sent down, brought back to the bench, sent down, Houston snagged him for their bench.

Bleach was not smart, but he was not dumb enough to purposefully put his paw into a swing to pilfer a ball.
