I hope that he makes the club.

It's a real shame that he never won a GG. Mark Belanger won many, and Marty Marion won an MVP despite both being pretty bad hitters. Why couldn't AE get any recognition?

Meanwhile, Derek Jeter has 5.  The GG is a joke because the people who award it are not consistent about what they award it for.

Saw on mlbtr that Everett made the Indians as a backup IF. Hit .300 in ST, all singles. I wonder if they worked him out all around the IF?

On the contrary.  The order of preference is, and has been for quite awhile:

1) Good fielder who hits like a motherfucker;
2) Barely passable fielder who hits like a motherfucker for the Yankees;
3) Great fielder who doesn't embarrass himself at the plate;

in the absence of any of the above

4) Best fielder at his position

You forgot one that's either right before or right after 3, but definitely ahead of #4:
fielder who makes easy plays look hard, resulting in flashy and/or highlight reel plays

Also known as the Edmonds Clause.

there's another corollary to this, which is the player who gets a reputation for making slick plays and being a good fielder early in his career, then wins the award by default later in his career if criteria 1 & 2 aren't met. call it the omar vizquel corollary

Joey:

Vizquel was a very good SS at 40. I saw him play with the Giants. He still had good range, unlike Jeter, who's essentially a stationary player, i.e., a wooden Indian.

I agree, I saw him in several Giants games too. What I was saying is that certain guys develop an early-career reputation for being both great and slick fielders then will essentially grandfather their way into gold gloves later in their careers, especially if there's no obvious good fielder/great hitter or great hitter/yankee. Not saying Vizquel turned into Jeter, but Everett was the more deserving gold glover at that point.
