Pretty darned cool!!!

Back to baseball

Now you can re-live all the plays from that game or any other game you choose.  Use the search form to the right to find your favorite games, players, or teams, and view them play-by-play as seen below.
In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

So I jumped straight to the 2005 playoffs.

Before you write off any team, bear in mind that in game 4 against the Braves, we started:
Jason Lane
Willy Taveras
Mike Lamb
Morgan Ensberg
and Adam Everett

Any given team, any given day.

Thanks for that link, it was neat to go back and see the first Astros game I ever attended.  Astros win 4-3 on May 21, 1966 in extra innings.  Who scored the winning run that day?

None other than Ron Brand.

Very cool.

Another game I went to: June 3, 1989

I was on a date and had to leave. Caught the last few innings after I dropped her off.

I can't remember the games I went to *last* season, and you guys are talking about games from 30 years ago.

ETA got to 3rd base for the first time that night.  That's why he remembers it.

Nope. Check the dates on those games. The first is the only rainout in the Astrodome. The second is the longest game in the Dome. There are reasons I remember those.

Well that explains it.  I didn't get to 3rd base last season.

It also explains why I remember the Journey concert in 1985.  I hit the game winning home run, pitched a two-hit shutout, sang the national anthem and sold peanuts in the grandstand that night.  I gave it everything I had.

October 5th, 2005 was my first Astro game. A 10-5 shellacking in Game 1 of the Divisional Series. Just watched it again thanks to this site. A shout out to Jackelwein for the opportunity. Maybe we can do it again sometime.

Good stuff, thanks for sharing.

My first stop was opening day 1994 against the Expos.

My old man let me skip school for what ended up being a thrilling major league debut for James Mouton (and the creation of the 'MOOOOUUUU' chant) in a 6-5 win at the Dome.

Another interesting fact about that game is that Reynolds and Hampton both pitched in relief of Harnisch.

Found the first game I ever attended. July 20th, 1962. Astros facing St Louis. Ray Washburn started for the Cards in a lineup that included CF Curt Flood, 2B Julian Javier, LF Stan Musial, 3B Ken Boyer, SS Julio Gotay, and a PH appearance for Red Schoendienst. Turk Farrell threw a CG for the win.

I still remember the game, even though I was only 7 at the time. Maybe because it turned out to be a great game. Maybe because I was too young to drink beer.

45’s down 3-1 with one out in the bottom of the 8th and Bob Aspromonte hits a solo HR. That is my single most vivid memory, other than the heat and mosquitoes.

Bottom of the 9th…..Billy Goodman PH for The Flea and singles off Lindy McDaniel. Jim Golden PR for Goodman, and Pidge Browne PH for Farrell. Browne BB. Jim Pendleton PR for Browne. Sac bunt from Joey Amalfitano. IBB to Al Spanger to load the bases. Game winning, walk-off single by Roman Mejias.

My relationship with my baseball team has never again been quite as good as it was that first night at the ballpark.

That's really cool, outlookdude.

I wish I could remember my first game. I know it was against the Phillies, and I know it was either '65 or '66, but that's all I remember other than we were so far up it was terrifying to me at the time. I doubt we were REALLY far up there, certainly not in the purple section.

My first professional baseball game was in the Twin Cities at old Metropolitan Stadium. I don't remember much about it except that Harmon Killebrew was huge and Tony Oliva launched a couple of bats into the seats.

I don't remember when my first Astros game was, but I imagine it must have been during my freshman orientation week. There were many more over the next few years, including the 22-inning marathon against the Dodgers.

That is great.  What I remembered:

Saturday
Senators
Paul Foytack
Eddie Yost
Harvey Kuenn

That's all it took to find this gem

What shocked me was that with the game tied 1:1 in the bottom of the 8th with 2 outs, they let Foytack bat.  He ended up scoring in a 3-run inning and earning a CG W.

Wish I could remember my first game, but it's one of my dad's favorite memories, so I get to hear about it from time to time.  He was intent on getting me to a game in the Dome when I was 2 years old, but he'd been wanting to take me since I was born.  As the story goes, he walked me up through the concourse atop his shoulders, and when the field came into view, a hush came over me and my jaw literally dropped.  Sat there motionless for a good minute.  Been a fan ever since.

My son's 2 years-old this June.  Can't wait.
Don't think twice, it's alright.

Wish I could remember my first game...

I've been trying to puzzle this out myself. My family doesn't have a first game story for me, but the first game I remember clearly was a game against the Braves when Hank Aaron was playing. It had to have been 1974 because I remember the Astros marketing the thing as a chance to see the home run king, so it would have been that season. I am quite sure I attended games before that but I have no idea when my first game would have been. Mom's coming down here next week. I'll quiz her on it and get back to you.

I don't know how anybody remembers that stuff.  I certainly remember cheering like hell for Billy Doran when I was 10 years old, but can't tell you anything about the game.  I remember that I went to plenty of games before that as well, but that's about all, which does me no good with that Web site.

Well, I mean, Hank Aaron, all-time home run leader, it is pretty memorable, even to a six year old.

I recall his being welcomed very warmly, which with the benefit of some perspective I now realize was not a foregone conclusion.

Chuck - My 1st game was the same season at the same park.  My family always took a labor day weekend trip to Atl.  We went to a Braves game - we got a poster of 715 with Hank still at home and Al Downing looking over his shoulder as it headed towards the visa sign in the left center.  That poster stayed above my bed until we moved to a new house two years later.  I wish I still had it.
Always ready to go to a game.

There was at least one earlier than this one, but I can't find it right now. But I distinctly remember seeing Jim Bouton pitch for the Astros against Cincinnati on May 24, 1970. He only faced four batters as the starter, retiring no one, before the Hat came out and got him. It was his last start for the Astros. The Astros scored seven runs in the eighth inning off of the bullpen to win 10-7. Pepitone was at 1B and hit a triple. The Astros went 3-15 against the Reds that year.

You can't throw PBR in the same bin as that swill.  Yes, hipsters have douchefied the brand, but it's at least stood the test of time.  It's not some fly-by-night flavor down your beer fad like the chills and the limes and the smirnoff drinks that give you a cavity before they give you a buzz.

PBR's better than the Bud light lime's and Smirnoff's and stuff, but that's about as far as I can go in praising it. One of my good buddies in SF 'invented' a drink he calls a "baboon." It's PBR mixed with ruby red grapefruit juice (mixed in the PBR can). He's one of the hipsterest people I know, and SF probably the hipsterest town this side of Brooklyn, so it's become a pretty ubiquitous drink around the Mission district.

It's better than Yuengling, which around here (NC) is supposed to be the 'good' beer.

Do you not get Carolina Beer Co. brews where you're at?  I always thought they were pretty good, especially the Carolina Blonde.

No more compelling argument for avoiding it can be made.

I think Yuengling is a great beer for the price. But then, that's just how I roll. My current favorite cheapo beer here in NY State is Gennessee Cream Ale, $4.50 for six bottles at our local grocery store.

There's Carolina Beer Co. and Carolina Brewing Company.  They make okay beers, but Trader Joe's generic "Mission St." beers kick the shit out of them in both taste and value.  I just haven't found a go-to like I have in Texas (a beer that is served almost everywhere and doesn't taste like shit).  So, I drink PBR or Bud.

Ah, the Genny Scream Ale.  Genny, in all of its iterations (Genny, Genny Light, Genny Red, Genny Ice and the Scream Ale) were our staples in college.  I think I one point we could get a 30 pack for $12.95.

I went straight to Game 4 of the 2004 NLCS.   That site has problems with players getting thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double.   It gets stuck on the Marquis getting thrown out at 2nd play in the top of the 4th.

Yuengling is not terrible ... it at least has some real beer flavor.  Mark has the straight story on PBR, though.

PBR's main attributes, besides price, are:
1. It's better than Coors Light
2. It gives you an excuse to do the Dennis Hopper bit from Blue Velvet.

I dare you all to try Big Flats (Walgreens' signature $0.50-a-can brew). My roommate's picked it up a few times, but I've never had the courage to drink one.

I'd piss Coors if I could.  You believe that happy crappy?

A friend took those to a superbowl party.  I think one can got passed around for taste. It did not get finished.  NASTY.

I've given up trying to buy Shiner at the grocery store.  It's always skunked.  It's available in some bars though.

Because, despite the taste, it gives you a handy receptacle for pee?

With so much good beer in Texas to drink now, it just makes me sad to read/hear people trumpeting the deliciousness of Lone Star.
