Apparently it depends on the kind of tear.

Depends on the tear, the person, and their age (IMHO). I had mine repaired on around this date when I was 47 with mixed results. A young athlete should recover pretty nicely but a quick return to catching might still be a tall order.

There's some talent in A-ball but nothing near ready.

I had my left knee 'scoped for this at age 43. Left me with three neat little x's on the surface around the joint. I believe my recovery program mainly involved sitting in an easy chair, watching TV, and drinking vodka tonics, and ordering everyone around. I recovered pretty quickly (forcibly.)

Friend of mine who is a S&C coach has had a very long and difficult recovery from this surgery in October. He's 20 years older than Castro, which does matter, but is in excellent overall shape.

I have no idea what they might do at the plate in the big leagues and don't much care but from what I've seen Esposito and Corporan can both catch. Not that my opinion means shit but I am totally comfortable with the idea of Q as the every day catcher. I'm really saddened by the injury but Q will play good defense and throw people out when they foolishly try to run on him. He'll bat .220 or .240 but who gives a fuck.

They have several viable defensive options in terms of backup at the position once they tire of Moe Bandy's pouting back there.

McTaggart ran down a list of possible trade candidates:

Ryan Doumit, Pirates-Probably the best option on the list, but is still a backup on the Pirates. Owed $5.1M, but could probably get Pittsburgh to eat some of that. Olney tweets that he's definitely available and shouldn't cost too much.
Brian Schneider, Phillies-A reasonable option and only makes $1.5M this season. Not sure how anxious Phils are to move him.
A.J. Ellis, Dodgers-Don't know who he is, but he's their third-stringer.
Kelly Shoppach, Rays-Offense has been terrible the past two seasons. Not sure of his defense, but would be better off using in-house options unless club sees something.
Tyler Flowers, White Sox-Decent MLB-ready catching prospect, starting gig blocked by Pierzynski. Not sure if they would trade the prospects needed for an interim player. They could and just get different prospects in the off-season, though.
Yankees-McT mentions their depth, but doesn't think the Astros would be looking for a prospect. If Montero is ready, though that would make Russell Martin potentially available, though. Martin signed a $4M deal in the offseason, so he's probably out of our price range unless the Yanks ate at least half of that.

This team is extremely unlikely to contend this year. If you accept that, what's the point in trying to upgrade Q? He's perfectly serviceable, and taking on more salary just to get 20 more points of BA from the catcher position seems silly, especially for a one-year deal. (This assumes that Castro will be back perfectly healthy next year; if that's not the case, then maybe you look for somebody who could be a multi-year solution. But you really won't know if you need that until next off-season.)

The problem is that the F.O. isn't going to concede the season (esp. in Spring Training). So, adding what could be a much more potent bat, once you move past BA, might be beneficial to the club. If they start Q, they start Q, but at this point, taking on another catcher's salary on a 1-year deal would be the same as adding Pudge's salary in '09 (ie won't affect any other potential moves).

Schneider is an interesting candidate. He used to be a pretty good defensive catcher, and I assume he still is. Haven't paid much attention to him the last few years though.

Me too. The only one I found was Dan Wilson, who tore his ACL before his last "retirement" year. He never played afterward, but never planned to play beyond the year of the injury to begin with. I didn't consider that a good measuring stick.

I read that to mean that Wade was referring to the "...plus conditioning" part of Castro's return timetable. In other words "there's going to be things as a catcher he's not going to be able to do right away, until he's properly conditioned." Either way, yeah, it probably is especially sucky for a catcher to try to come back from. And he probably won't be as fast as he was before (good thing he's not a promising young CF/leadoff type).

Norris will never be a great defensive catcher, but he's got a very good bat.

I think the youngster for CLE (Santana?) blew out his knee towards the end of last season. I don't know if it was the ACL or what but it would be interesting to see where he's at in his recovery.

His was a blown-out LCL, which is on the side of the knee. He's cleared and playing in Spring Training games. He's going to play some 1B this season, but that's to keep his bat in the lineup and to avoid putting too much stress on his knee. He wasn't much of a defensive catcher, though and his injury wasn't as serious, so I don't know how Castro's abilities post-surgery will compare to Santana's.

Which is hard to believe, because at the time, his knee went completely backwards. I was worried he'd never play again.

and Castro was walking around after his injury. Santana's was much more violent, but "fortunately" he didn't blow out his ACL.

Matt B. completely severed his ACL his senior year in HS when he caught his spikes on the plate covering home. he got right back up and threw several more pitches before his knee gave out on him. i was not coaching them then, but he told me he was sure he was not hurt bad because there was no pain whatsoever.

I wonder how much of a role adrenaline plays in cases like this. I mean, are there really no signals being sent that say "ouch", or are they just covered by adrenaline? In 8th grade, I saw two guys collide, with one outweighing the other by at least 100 pounds. The larger kid stepped on the smaller's forearm, breaking the radius and ulna to the point that his arm looked like a U. He got up laughing and it wasn't until he looked down at his arm that he realized that something was off.
