Stanford & Rice

Play a 3 game series this weekend at Rice.  I wish they'd bring their marching bands.

I looked at the UT schedule this morning, and it looks like UT and Rice don't play each other at all this year. I had sort of assumed that that had turned into a fixture that wouldn't ever go away.

No kidding.  UT must have been scared off after the football game.

There's a ton of young talent in this game, highlighted of course by Anthony Rendon, who would have gone #1 overall in the 2010 MLB draft.   Stanford's coach just called him college's Joe DiMaggio.  Last season he had 26 HR's, and only 22 BB's.  An amazing talent.

Stanford has put together some monster recruiting classes the past few years, including: SS Kenny Diekroeger is a potential #1 overall selection for the 2012 MLB draft, RHP Mark Appel who will start Friday afternoon and flashes 94-98 MPH heat, and Austin Wilson, who made BA's preseason All-America team as a freshman.

Rice will start a couple highly talented freshmen RHP that passed up huge signing bonuses to play college ball, local product John Simms, and Colleyville hurler Austin Kubitza.

Should be some great baseball with some players that will be future household names.

Yeah, especially since this was the first year the teams were initially scheduled to play a weekend series, rather than the usual home/away midweeker.

I think the lack of a Rice/Texas game is due to Texas' trip to Hawaii or something.  They resume next year, though, correct?

I plan on going to Reckling next weekend for one of the USC games.  Hopefully this spring weather holds up.

I think you mean 22 K's?

I was wondering about that.  Simms is a friend's nephew and the friend is not [previously] a baseball fan.  He invited me along because he thought I was.  If I recall, Simms was high in the draft--32d round or so? And was a star at the Woodlands.  According to his uncle he is the best pitcher ever.  Ever.  It should be fun, and it'll be fun to follow him at Rice.

Thanks, BU... yeah, only 22 K's.

Simms fell down the draft quite a bit due to his commitment to going to college.  Graham has already called him the best freshmen pitcher he's had... we'll see how that plays out.

I think I'm gonna try to catch the game tomorrow if the boy cooperates.

Strong start by the Cardinal in game 1.  Appel comes out throwing 98, 99 the first two innings before settling in at 93, 94.  Rendon goes 0-4, I think he's still a little behind after missing so much time due to his broken ankle from the previous summer.  Diekroeger goes 2-4 and catalyzes their first two scoring innings.

I haven't followed Rice in a few years, except for friends who've said they've had problems with pitching.  That's how last night looked, after Simms.

Didn't bring any Cardinal luck to Reckling but what a beautiful day for baseball.
