Astros sign Aroldis Chapman's bff
« on: January 23, 2011, 12:21:57 pm »
Per tweet from Melissa Segura (SI):

Quote
Jose Carlos Thompson, Aroldis Chapman's bff, signs deal w/ Houston Astros. The 6'1" 2B hit .440 for Western Oklahoma JC. Est. $ 250,000.

Glad we know how he rolls and that they're finally attempting to address the dearth of talent at 2B.

Best friend forever.

There's gotta be a piece missing here. Thompson's listed stats are from 2009, and he doesn't appear on WOJC's 2010 roster. Google has nothing to say about him transferring to another school. So here's a guy who disappeared for a year (assuming the school's info is accurate) and wound up with a 4th-round bonus figure. Hell, even if the site's info is wrong and he went undrafted out of school last year, that kind of jump in stock during the offseason would still be confusing. For the record, the Astros took his teammate Jamaine Cotton in the 15th round last June. I'm curious to see how this all went down.

Paraphrase of Footer tweets:

He's 23, which is a little older than I thought since he played for a JuCo in '09.  He didn't play for a team in '10 and was evaluated at the club's Dominican complex.  He can play SS, also and we should get a look at him in big-league camp.

Wow, isn't that unusual, for a kid just signed, and with no pro experience, to be in big-league camp?

ETA: Levine story explains a bit more.

McTaggart has an update on the club's first impressions with a little more of the background story.

He started by asking for $5,000,000 and eventually signed for $250,000.

Sounds like he missed his calling as a plaintiff's attorney... [/pot calling kettle]
