Opening Day 2011
« on: January 03, 2011, 01:56:35 pm »
Got a call from the Astros today and they want to know if we want tickets for Opening Day again.

Here are the prices I was quoted (they do not give group discounts for Opening Day):

Field Box $41
Bullpen $27
Mezzanine $21
View Deck I $16
View Deck II $13

Who's in?
What section?

The Astros home opener is FRIDAY, APRIL 8, 2011 at 6:05 p.m. against the Florida Marlins. They open the season in Philly and then a trip to Cincinnati before they have their home opener.

They upped our ticket limit to 50 for this year (probably due to low ticket sales).  I know it is early, but we can reserve a group area now if we want to.

Wow, last time there was a Friday reg season opener was in 2000.  Our family might make a weekend out of this one!  Perhaps some Austin v Houston golf Saturday morning...

You are on the list, my paper list, I guess I missed typing you in.  I gotcha for 2.  Does the bow tie need a ticket, too?

The screen is pretty fantastic.  The HD is so HD enough that I can clearly read the stats and scores from my office window in the middle of the afternoon.  The St. Thomas 7's were playing the Cy Lake what-have-yous at the stadium today.

Just an FYI.  There is a sold-out Lady Gaga concert the same night as Opening Day.  Parking and/or traffic may be bad.

Fine, I'll admit it.  I've seen it in concert.   The crowd is more than just gay men and young girls.  Hell, there really weren't that many young girls.

The only good thing about Toyota Center is the parking garage attached.  And the Astros start at 6:00, so technically, Astros fans should have the better parking.

Oh, come on. It's just a show. Not some dull guys standing around with acoustic guitars strumming what passes for a hook these days, harmonizing forgettable melodies that only reveal themselves as possibly distinct after laborious inspection. I'm not a Lady Gaga fan but her shtick/show is entertaining in a bombastic way.

My kids listen to her some and frankly it beats the shit out of having to listen to Kanye or Jay-Z or Shaggy or whoeverthefuckelseflavorofthemonth is infecting the airwaves these days

Gaga drives her publicity by polarizing listeners, thus she must constantly top herself to keep feeding the fire. Her fame will dwindle at some point, but not until the haters develop more of a "who gives a shit?" attitude and quietly ignore her. "The Fame Monster" is an aptly-named album. Her schtick works perfectly, and as a result, she's almost universally known. In China last semester, "Poker Face" and "Bad Romance" were just about the only songs that my Chinese and American friends all knew. Music-wise, her songs serve their purpose. They're energetic and catchy, good for dancing and socializing but not particularly useful for actual listening.

Also, kudos to her for capitalizing on all the "she's got a dick" nonsense. Does it matter in the slightest what genitalia she's got? If people are trying to attack you with shit like that, you take the attention and milk it for everything you can.

Yeah, fuck the void.

Good news and bad news.

Bad News:  family commitments prevent Miss Limey from attending OD (stupid sister having a baby).

Good news: there's a spare ticket going - face value is $21.  First one to PM me gets it at that price.

Astros now have a sale where you'll get a free ticket to a Padres game (same seating section) if you buy an opening day ticket.

How are those negotiations going, Drayton?

Hey, I'd like to challenge some of you Out-Of-Towners that have never gone to OD with the rest of us to plan ahead for next year.  It would be great to meet some of you who we have never seen and put a face to the SnS name.

JD: I was coming last season until I had to divert to Austin for an in-and-out meeting with a book publisher. If Mrs. Happy gives me a kitchen pass, or even wants to come along, being a big baseball fan herself, I'm there.

Mmmmm, In and Out.

Same day trip. Had I been there longer, I'd have made contact with the Raups to meet.

I have not heard back from everyone, but am hoping that you have all received your ticket(s) by now?

Got it, see everyone at Spanish Flower!  Truth be told, I'm working days and nights right now to be out from under this project and have a clear and free Friday.  It may just happen that I get away late on Friday and drive directly to the park.  Either way, see all of you on Friday!

she is talking to YOU, strosrays.

And Craig, jaklewein, etc, etc, that put a lot of work into the site.

And then there's Alkie.

I withdraw the challenge.

I was at Opening Day 2006; I introduced myself and you called me a bastard. I sat beside Andyzipp and right behind the Raups, and there was much hilarity.

I most certainly did no such thing.

I'll see you guys at the game, hopefully only an inning or two late.

RB, drink exactly 5 beers for me at SF.
Don't think twice, it's alright.

What section are y'all in? I'll look for you on the telecast. Has anybody set up Milo with a fake group name?

I was sorry to miss this year.  Maybe every couple of years will work for me.  I'll have to start looking for conference schedules in Houston for next April...
