Astros @ bucks, 9/24
« on: September 24, 2010, 06:34:23 pm »
Angel had a 12 pitch walk in the top of the first.  RBI single Pence and sac fly Kepp.

Wallace just made a spectacular diving stop at first that should be a web gem.  2-1 Astros end of 1

Walker bunts the runners over and Jones is up.

Groundout to 1B that Wallace almost misplays. Myers not enjoying himself, he flings the ball back toward the mound and stalks into the dugout, head down.

Kepp with an RBI single to left scoring Pence and it's 8-5 now. Lusty booing from the crowd and it's time for another pitching change.

I've got to step out for a bit if anyone wants to take over PBP.

Nice milestone for Myers.  Only 3 others w/ conseq 6+ inning games to start a season.

Tip of the cap to Mills for letting him stay in and get it, too

IIRC, there were only two games that he has really been in enough trouble to have been pulled early, tonight and a game against the Brewers(?) a couple of months ago.  Credit to Mills for keeping him in both of him!

That dribbler of the end of Bourgeois' glove aside, kid looks great in left and center.  I know (or I think I know anyway) that Bourn is better, but how much of a difference is there really?

Just looking at B-R. Bourn is almost a full year younger and came to the majors much earlier. Bourn hits better, partially evidenced by Boojwah's 11 seasons in the minors - he started playing rookie ball for the Rangers when he was 18 and was an infielder pretty much until 2007.

Even though Bourn has regressed some since last year offensively, he appears to be a better hitter and is likely a step better in the field too.

Maybe the Bucs would take Anderson Hernandez and Bogusevic for McCutchen the center fielder. Hell, throw in Chacin or Byrdak.

Bourn... is likely a step better in the field too.

This is what I was getting at.  Bourn makes the plays look a bit easier in CF, but Bourgeois seems to get to most of what Bourn would.  How much of a dropoff do you think Bourgeois defense is as compared to Bourns.

I don't have anything to quantify it with, especially since there just isn't that much common history without spending more time than I have on it, but just to throw a number out there - 10%? I doubt his arm is as good as Bourn's, and he's clearly a little slower even though he covers a lot of ground. For instance, I think Bourn gets to that ball by the wall easily, better positioning notwithstanding. He's just a faster guy.

Add to that the fact that he doesn't hit as well and probably won't get the time to work on it, and you have a pretty valuable fourth outfielder. I'd love to have Andrew McCutchen though. He's so good they got rid of Nyjer Morgan, and Nyjer was a darn good player if you can overlook the mental struggles.

I think Bourn is the best guy to play in CF at MMP, after him Beltran.

Definitely not trying to get rid of Bourn, just curious was all.

And on an unrelated note... the loss tonight was the Pirates 100th of the season.
