The news you have all been waiting for

Sarah has dumped Bo

For all you single men... she doesn't look bad in white pants, is willing to go to baseball games, clearly has no standards for accepting a date, and has "a high pain tolerance".  do with this information what you will.

Bo is now free to pursue Miss Teen South Carolina, hastening the onset of the idiocracy.

He seemed kinda dumb during the interview at the game.

In that clip, he seemed like a lobotomy patient.

I hate to hear him interviewed again this weekend.

I'm kind of giving the kid a break for his public speaking abilitites.  He just graduated HS, so he's like what, 17 or 18 years old?  Sure this guy is a total loser...that's true...but think back to when you guys were freshman...

I've never worn a baseball cap that way, nor have I had that kind of hardware in my lip.

I can't understand why that guy agreed to be on TV.  The situation wasn't embarrassing enough without the Early Show guy questioning his manhood?

Yeah, I'm thinking that pain tolerance she's talking about has a lot to do with why she's dating him.  It's classic conditioning, obviously.

For reasons I won't go into here, I once found myself with the opportunity to watch daytime TV back in the old country.  At first, I wasn't sure if the programming was designed for people with no brains, or if the programming itself killed brain cells to the point where it became watchable.

Luckily, I wasn't subjected to it long enough to find out the truth.

ETA:  Nighttime TV isn't much better.  While I realise that being a white, heterosexual male is pretty much the tallest hog at the trough and so I should count my blessings, it does get a boring being the butt of every joke on every sitcom on every channel.  And commercials.

Did you have a policy on hair length?  Just curious.  I had one coach who thought that was real important.

i learned after my first year in coaching that the more rules i had, the more i would have to enforce. my first year in Brenham, one of my favorite kids on the team broke every rule i had at least once. i ran him until he dropped more times than i could count.

my rule became: "if i hear about it, you are in trouble." i had very few--almost no--behavior issues on my teams. i was fanatical about prohibiting temper tantrums. as Mark can tell you, my teams did NOT throw bats, helmets, gloves or tantrums, and they did not EVER yell at or taunt the other team. if anyone violated these rules, they took a seat immediately, and the coach expressed his displeasure in very direct terms. the other kids helped me police this, and i was very proud of the manner in which my teams conducted themselves during games, including during some trying circumstances created by opposing teams' less than sportsmanlike behavior.

i would not have accepted long hair, but i had no rule about it and did not require super short haircuts. "you need a haircut" took care of the issue sufficiently to keep me happy with the way we looked. caps could never be worn backwards (catchers excepted during the game) or sideways, and shirttails must remain tucked in at all times.

Often wrong, but never in doubt.

it was not "cheering," i assure you. Calallen was the worst i have ever seen, and it started with the coach. great, great HS baseball program, but they also were the worst behaved and worst sports i ever played or coached against. i loved beating them.

Coach, I would have loved to have played for you under those rules. I liked fairness and not an arbitrary coach where the rules changed from minute to minute and sometimes from player to player.I playesd for several arbitrary coaches in my day too, but most of them had similar rules.

Really, I think most kids would not have minded playing in a situation like you've described.  I would have liked it.  We would've butted heads on the hair thing, though.  It wasn't that important to me; I'd had to cut it enough times for football to know that the one thing for sure about a bad haircut -- sooner or later it'll grow back.  But I never could see why it was such a big deal to the coach, and the more he pushed it, the less likely I was to give in.  It really pissed him off.

So I had two tickets to go watch Nolan Ryan pitch (bought them for the missus and myself).  At the last moment, the missus calls and says she too busy that night trying to finish some homework, so maybe I should invite a friend to go to the game with me.  So I hang up the phone and take a deep sigh.  My office mate (I shared an office with another guy) asks me what's wrong.  I say "Oh nothing, I have an extra ticket to tonights game and I can't think of anyone to go with me..." He then immediately says "I'll go!".  I never once talked to this guy about baseball... at all.  Was he even a fan?  His enthusiasm led me to believe he was, so deal, let's do this!

We arrive at the game and it's Nolan Ryan and the Astros versus the much hated SF Jints.  Much hated by me that is.  Chili Davis is batting third for them and squares a fastball from Nolan, but he is well in front of it (Nolan must of taken something off the pitch).  We're sitting in the field boxes on the first base side and we've got a very clear view of the hitters.  Chili puts a charge into the ball and as quickly as it got to him, that is how quickly it came off his bat.  It's a screamer, line drive about eye level when you stand up (as we did).  It is coming straight, I mean straight at my friend.  He ducks and hides literally undeneath the seat so I'm left with no reaction time whatsoever, the ball is on me.  Just out of pure instincts, I reach out my right arm as if I had a first baseman's mitt on and the ball strikes my hand.  Once it made contact, I pull my hand back towards my body and now with my other hand I cradle the ball coming towards my face.  I move my head sideways, sort of a Neo move in the Matrix, you know, when he dodges a bullet headed for his cranium.

Everyone must of thought I was a dead man, but instead, I catch the ball.  Or better said, the ball gets stuck in my hand, the pain is immense, but all I could think was "Thank God I'm still alive!"  When a ball is chasing you, don't run, knock it down or deflect it or do something to slow down it's path.  I accidently caught the darn thing!  All around me folks start cheering, the bullpen looks up and one them (don't remember who it was) gave me a thumbs up.  An usher comes to see if I'm alright and I assured them I was fine, no more pain in my hand, no broken bones and yes, this was a very lucky catch on my part.  People behind me pat me on the back, others around me applaud.  My friend... ah.... where is he?

Oh yeah, he's still cowering in fear underneath the seat.  I assure him the firing squad had left and there was no more danger so he stood up, and some folks around us laughed at him and I think I remember one guy screaming "booooooo!!" once my friend showed his face.  We sat down and he looks at the ball and asks me "Can I have it?"  "What, the ball?"  "Yeah, the ball... can I have it?"  "Seriously, you want the ball *I* caught?"  "Yes, for my daughter"  Oh, he had me there, for the whole time we were office mates, I would compliment him on his pictures of his beautiful family, especially his newborn daughter.  "Sure, here".  I heard mild applause around me, I'm guessing some folks thought I was being nice and all and showing my friend I held no grudges that he bailed on a foul ball headed straight for him and thus made me next in line to try and stop a speeding bullet.

No, I just thought his daughter would like a baseball.

So I went home that night and told the missus what had happened.  As I unravel the story to her as I have for you, she is getting more and more upset.  So I thought "oh, she's angry that the guy almost got me killed with his bail job... wow, my wife really loves me!".  Nope, she's mad because I gave the ball away that was pitched by Nolan Ryan, a memento I could have saved and given to my own children later on.

Oops, didn't think about that part of it.

We were at a Round Rock game a couple years ago, sitting near the 3rd base dugout.  Just past the dugout on the front row were two or three kids, little league age with their baseball gloves, kind of clowning around.  In the row behind them were a mom and an infant in her lap.  At one point, a line drive foul comes screaming right for that cluster of seats.  All of the kids in front barely had time to duck while the mom tried to turn away and cover the baby's head with her hand.  When the ball was about six inches away from the baby's head, *POP* one of the kids sticks his glove up and spears the ball.  They all went back to acting like kids afterward, but I wonder if he knows he probably saved that baby's life.  Never mind the fact that the mom probably shouldn't have been sitting there.

This is why I always sit in the seat closer to home plate, so I can turn my back to the ball and shield my wife at the same time.  And, you know, so I don't get divorced.

Angel Sanchez has never hit a child with a foul ball.

no, we would not have "butted heads." you would have done what i asked you to do. there was no other option if i asked you to cut your hair. that meant i wanted you to cut it, and it would not have been intended as a topic for debate or discussion.

Read what I said originally about hair, Bench. It was never an issue.

I get your drift, and I think I understand.

But I probably wouldn't have cut my hair, anyway.  I didn't do it when my coach ordered me to, and got benched; then right before district, he gave me one more chance to do it his way.  So I told him I'd hit .425 and made all-district the year before (under the previous coach), with hair halfway down to my ass.  Why was this an issue now?  So he kicked me off the team, which is kind of what I thought he'd do.

I went to a baseball game with two women, one a banker, one an engineer, and we sat behind third base four rows up.  The engineer is pretty, the banker is . . . Well, the banker gets there early, and the second baseman for the visitors (it was some useless interleague game) is signing autographs.  The banker goes up with her ticket stub and he writes down his phone number.  She's on my left.

The engineer is on my right.  I'm talking to the banker, or maybe I was just looking at the banker, and the next thing I see from the corner of my eye is a hard foul headed straight for my head.  The engineer reaches out and snags the ball, one handed.  Years later she gave me the ball.  I made her autograph it.

The foul does get harder every year.

as would i have. it would not have been about the hair, per se. it would have been for your defiance, which i cannot fathom.

btw, it matters not at all what some other coach did in some other year. i am your coach now. how good a player you are also matters not at all to me either. i had one experience during my coaching at McCallum in the '70s with my best pitcher attempting defiance, but it was not about grooming. i told him to turn in his uniform. when he realized i was serious, he decided that playing was more important than being in control. i went on like it never happened, and he got a scholarship to UT.

My late grandmother lost an eye to a foul ball at an Austin Senators game back in the day.  Lived the last 30+ years of her life with a glass eye.  So I make every effort not to sit in the high risk zones, although it's inevitable sometimes.  Tell you what though, when the day comes that I'm taking a baby to games, I'll definitely either be in the nose bleeds or behind the screen.

Yes.  He told me I was a bad influence on the team, which was bullshit.  I liked to fuck around on my down time, but I took playing seriously.  Not because I wanted a scholarship somewhere, I just dug to play.  I loved everything about baseball, practice, games, whatever.  I always showed up, and I never screwed around, never questioned strategy or anything.  I always played hard, and got dirty.  I was known for it.  That should have been enough for him; and anyway, there were other kids on that team who were a lot worse influence than I was.

But he was right to run me, no question.  I had challenged his authority.  No way he could back down.

My defiance was just me.  I wasn't going to change myself for some coach.  Kicking me off the team was his leverage on me, and he used it.  Good for him, I never thought he was wrong to do it, and as I said, I thought it was what he would do, going in.  He had to get rid of me, and he wasn't a bad guy, I think it bothered him.  What he couldn't see -- I was already gone, long before that.

your first paragraph is all rationalization, which is unlike you. it was not for you to decide what should be good enough for him, no more than it is for your son to decide what conduct of his should satisfy you. surely the adult you knows that looking back.

i doubt that defiance was "just me." after all, you did cut your hair for football. i suspect that your last sentence says it all. you were done but could not bring yourself to quit for whatever reason. you did the next best thing and forced him to kick you off the team. i'll bet that at the time, he was the bad guy and you were a  hero of sorts to your peers. i do not think he saw his ultimate authority as leverage over you, and i believe he did not like having to use it. he had to, though, and you knew he did. again for whatever reason, you wanted him to.

i look forward to reading about this in a future preview.

Yes, that's not like me.  Now.  There were other things going on at the time that set me off on a self-destructive spiral that lasted awhile.  This was just the start of it.

Yep.

You know me well.  And I am sure you know it, but I should say there is nothing personal in all this.  In fact, you have helped me understand (a little) better what the hell happened back then; although a lot of it is still a mystery to me.

i look forward to reading about this in a future preview.

Absolutely!  But not quite yet.  I still have to figure a way to work a girl into the narrative, and maybe a wolf or something.

i think i know kids, or at least i did once. i did not think you would take it personally, and i am glad i did not offend you. because you began our discussion by asking a question, i thought you wanted frank and honest answers from the coach that i still am. if i helped you in some small way, i am glad. you are a favorite of mine.

i do look forward to the preview, but if i get a choice, i prefer a girl to a wolf! i suspect there was one not too far away back then.

My thoughts exactly.  I don't think those are from a costume party, they're after a long day at "the office".
