Bump...and a word of caution.  The Griff's staff and clientele have a number of celebratory / rally traditions during an Astros game.  Most of them involve shots.  Fail to participate at your peril.

Are any of the residents of the Potomac Watershed Basin attending the games next week?  I'll be there on Monday at least.

I actually plan to attend this one.  What's the Griff's etiquette for "watching your division rivals clinch"?  If it's "we needed new furniture anyway", then I'm all-in.

The pub in which I used to work, back in the '80s, had a major refit one time.  They redid the bar, the carpet, all the tables, chairs and booths.  Even the toilets (sort of).  They even re-painted the whole place...nicotine colour.  I'm not joking.  That way, the smoke stains wouldn't make the place look shabby.

As an aside, at the grand reopening, the ribbon cutting was done by then-famous Page 3 Girl and rubbish pop singer Samantha Fox (link probably NSFW)

I find it amusing that the city with no zoning restrictions actually legislates whether to allow ads on buses.

You know, it really is unbelievable that ads inside of buses have not been part of the business plan from the beginning.

But they say in the article that there isn't a lot of money generated from bus ads.  It costs money to maintain those ads and to keep people from freeloading off those spaces.  I'm pretty sure the if the profit margin were significant it would have been done a long time ago.

In the DC Metro area, only some of the buses have ads on them, that tells me that it may not be worth the hassle of maintaining them.

You sell the entire operation to someone like Outdoor Systems or whoever they are now and let them worry about it. It really should not be terribly complicated.

Cool, do that. Since the game starts at 6 we were planning on going to get something to eat afterwards. We were thinking about Bennigan's.

Yeah, it was pretty crazy.  They said people were lining up at midnight to get in the gates at 8:00, with traffic backed up on 610.  That's one of the advantages of the Platinum Lot...roll up at 7:00, pull right in.

I knew there was something wrong with you.

Makes a lot more sense than picking up the knife in the right hand, cutting the food, putting down the knife, picking up the fork in the right hand, eating the food, putting down the fork...

Why would put the knife down and pick up the fork with the same hand?

Put the pitcher between BatGirl and Chuck and bat Hudson 1st so you dont have to worry about someone setting the table for him incorrectly.

I can see where you'd want someone with my speed batting 9th in a LaRussian line-up, two lead-off men and so on, but I've always envisioned myself more a two-hole hitter.

How can you pick up a fork if you already have a knife in that hand?  Seems unwieldy.

Proper Use of Knife, Fork, and Spoon
"The European, or 'Continental', style of using knife and fork is somewhat more efficient, and its practice is also slightly used in the United States, where left-handed children are no longer forced to learn to wield a fork with their right hands. According to this method, the fork is held continuously in the left hand and used for eating. When food must be cut, the fork is used exactly as in the American style, except that once the bite has been separated from the whole, it is conveyed directly to the mouth on the downward-facing fork.

Regardless of which style is used to operate fork and knife, it is important never to cut more than one or two bites at one time"

I see this a lot.  People cut food with the fork in the left and the knife in the right.  Then they put down the knife and switch the fork to the right hand to transfer the food from plate to mouth.

Those same people think I'm weird, because I never put down either fork or knife until I'm done, or until I need a hand free to pick up my drink.  Cutting and transfer all achieved without switching hands.

From the same article:

Quote
Proper Use of Knife, Fork, and Spoon
Another significant difference between the American and the European styles of using knife and fork is the American insistence that even the most awkward foods (peas being a great example) must be captured by the unaided fork. In Europe it is permitted to use the knife or a small piece of bread to ease an item onto the fork.

Step 1:  Cut a bite-sized piece of chicken fried steak;
Step 2:  Smush mashed potatoes and gravy onto the piece from Step 1;
Step 3:  Embed peas in the product of Steps 1 and 2;
Step 4:  Consume, enjoy, repeat.

You wouldn't. You use the knife in one hand and the fork in the other. Unless you only have one hand, which I'm fairly certain doesn't apply to Limey.

There are food historians who will tell that chopsticks are the sign of the most highly developed culinary culture. Only the unwashed infadels require two or more utensils.

Chopsticks require pre-cut food, which means you don't get to play with knives.  What's the fun of that?

Actually we do use two chopsticks at a time here in Asia.  But only 1 hand.

But you still only use the one utensil.  You don't use a pair of chopsticks and a meat cleaver, correct?

Different in different parts of China. In many places, you always use a spoon with the chopsticks.  I've only seldom ever seen a meat cleaver be the second utensil of choice, though.

In some Chinese dialects, there's a common saying, "You can't clap with one hand, and you can't eat with one chopstick."
