After Phillips flies out to CF, Cabrera singles up the middle, then Votto goes Crawford. Reds lead 2-0

Bourn flies out to RF.
Sanchez GO 6-3.
Berkman coaxes a walk.
Pence is the only player in the big leagues that can make that uni look ridiculous.  So much more reminiscent of Beaker....and he flies out to LF.

Bourn heads to 1B then turns and looks at the homeplate ump after being called out looking at strike 3.  Looked awfully low to me, but what the hell do I know?

Eleventy billion to gooseeggs?  That's a lot.  Like 2 Oswalt innings combined with a WS Oswalt inning special.  Maybe it'll help his trade value is he announces after the game that he pitched poorly because his back hurt and he strained his groin.  Awesomeness!

Cueto and his inflamed tonsils still on the mound.

Johnson singles to left.
Castro hits it to Phillips who makes a good throw to Cabrera, who muffs the catch.  Ruled an error, Johnson reaches on the FC.
Bourgeois PH for Chacin, pops into infield fly.
Bourn looks at strike 3.  Geez.
Sanchez taps one to 3rd.

Shutout intact.

Is it just me or do the Astros get the shit kicked out of them every time they go retro with the unis?

I'd FIFY the last part of your question to read "every time we watch" but I'm on my Blackberry and can't do that.

I'd seen enough of Sampson and am glad that he's going to RR. I don't think that he's a big league pitcher and would have DFA'd him. I have the same concern about Byrdak.

Except that Sampson has been an effective pitcher in the past, which makes me wonder if this is injury-related. I've been surprised that lately they've been saying that Lance's power decline is due to the knee surgery when the brave face they'd put on it earlier suggested it wouldn't linger like it has.

It may well be injury-related. I'm just looking at him pitching. I see no out pitch. Even Joe Slusarski was effective for awhile. I pay much more attention to the pitching than the results. I've never thought that Sampson was any good, even when he was getting some people out..

From the Astros site, about being sent down:

Quote
"They just said I need to go down and basically get right [like I was] in the first half of last year and first half of this year," Sampson said. "I'm not getting as many ground balls as I used to. I'm throwing strikes, but I'm throwing too good of strikes."

Sampson gave up a homer and two hits in one inning of relief Saturday and has pitched in 34 games with an ERA of 5.93. He was on the disabled list from June 1 to June 22 with tendinitis in his right rotator cuff. Sampson said he hopes to work on his mechanics while he's in Round Rock.

"I can look in the mirror and know I need to pitch better," Sampson said. "They're right. I need to be more consistent mechanically and making better pitches, especially when I'm ahead -- I'm making too good of pitches."

I'm terribly sorry, sir, you're not performing up to our expectations at your full time job, so we're going to remove you from one of the worst teams in baseball and make you go take a 3 month vacation; fucking blonde chicks in Austin.   Bummer.

Other people get sent down.   Sampson did this on purpose.

Right. The entire team is injured.

Right. The entire team is injured.

Of course not, but Sampson is coming off of surgery and I don't have any idea what that's doing to him. He was trying to pitch last year when he was hurt so there's no telling what is going on. Maybe he's perfectly healthy and just can't pitch. Maybe he's working through scar tissue that hurts like hell so he changed his motion some. I don't know, but I hope he works it out and gets to pitching better.

They're making a fair amount of hay talking about how Berkman hasn't been able to use his legs for power after the surgery, which certainly could be true but they made his surgery sound pretty light when they were discussing it earlier in the season - just a little scope and hey presto! he'll be fine. Then there were the additional weeks of swelling when he'd push it too far.

A big part of a successful team is avoiding or minimizing injury.

Sure. Another is having good players who play well. At a certain point the difference, as Noe would say, is mute.
