Astros v. Pirates, 7 July 2010
« on: July 07, 2010, 07:21:20 pm »
Bourn 8
Keppinger 4
Berkman 3
Lee 7
Pence 9
Johnson 5
Quintero 2
Sanchez 6
Moehler 1

v.

A. McCutchen 8
Tabata 7
Walker 4
Jones 3
Alvarez 5
Doumit 2
Church 9
Cedeno 6
D. McCutchen 1

It's 1-0 Astros after the first inning. Moehler did not allow a baserunner, Astros got their run when McCutchen served up some weak-ass shit to Jeff Keppinger.

I tuned in just in time to see the replay of him depositing that weak-ass shit. Bitch, don't throw that to JEFF KEPPINGER!

Bourn j-u-u-u-s-t missed a soft pop to shallow center, diving for it but it bounced in front of his glove. Nice quick 4-6-3 double play erases the runner though.

Moehler with a fine changeup for a swinging strike three to end the Pirates' half of the second. JD joked that for all the Geoff Blum fans, his bone chips will be available on Ebay soon.

Q fans, but Sanchez drops a nice bunt towards third and beats the errant throw for his second hit as an Astro. Alvarez was playing fairly deep but showed impressive speed getting to the ball before he threw it away.

Ronny Cedeno cranks a leadoff double on top of the 362 sign in left. McCutchen up, trying to bunt.

McCutchen fails miserably and strikes out. JD claiming an assist for Berkman for being so close that it spooked McCutchen. Now CF Andrew McCutchen is up.

Moehler walking gingerly around the mound, he pulled up on the last pitch. Could be groin muscle. Meeting at the mound.

Mills is convinced by Moehler that he should stay in but it doesn't look good. He won't last much longer, it seems to be bothering him pretty good.

Nice job, Chacin.

Pence throws like he can't bend his elbow, or maybe like his arm is fused in the shoulder socket, so that the only way to hurl the ball is spin his entire torso around. It's the craziest looking thing since Piss-Ant Eckstein.

Jesus, Pence, how long have you been playing the outfield?

I think that ball was knuckling pretty good.

Getting fooled by a knuckler is one thing (and it's damned frightening!), but taking that first step in and then having to turn tail and head back is another. I'm probably being too hard on him here because that ball was hit very hard, but Pence has pissed me off so much lately that I'm probably incapable of giving him the benefit of the doubt.

You make it seem like Pence doesn't know how to track a ball.

Oh, you should watch the 'Pancakes with Pence' video.

That's what's so frustrating. He seems like a genuinely likeable guy, and it's easy to want him to succeed. But he repeats mistakes that it seems like he should be learning to avoid, and after a while you just want to pull your hair out. Which is pretty much a non-starter for me.

he mentioned something about pitching yesterday when he talked to patty.  i missed the part about the astros working him out today though.

Basically said yesterday in the Smith interview the travel last year (pitched with Oakland and Toronto(?)) was difficult on the family (IIRC, his son has medical issues), that he hadn't received offers at the beginning of the season that worked for him.  He said he's staying in shape though, has been throwing quite a bit, and would give serious consideration to pitching for half a season. His agent has reached out to a number of teams in that regard.  Didn't say anything about an upcoming work out with the Astros though.

I can pick it up for a while.

Bourn strikes out to lead off the bottom of the 5th. He was fooled pretty badly on the 3rd strike.
McCutcheon tries to throw some shit by Keppinger, who pops it up to shallow left.
Berkman works the count full, and then sneaks another homer just over the railing in the Crawford Boxes!

Daigle tries to throw a pick-off away, but Berkman gets enough of a glove on it to keep it nearby.

Somebody (I missed the batter's name) lines out to Pence to end the inning.

Middle of the 6th: Astros 4, Pirates 3.

Did I hear correctly that Kabong only has 21 BB this season?

I've enjoyed Castro and Johnson for, at a minimum, their patience at the plate thus far.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

Did I hear correctly that Kabong only has 21 BB this season?

Yes.  That's pretty much his career pace, 40-50/season.  His Ks are slightly ahead of recent career pace

Pence is up. I wonder if they'll throw him a strike. Yup, they did, but he fouled it back. And then he holds up on a slider in the dirt! Works the count full, then grounds a hanging slider foul down the 3b line. Ballboy gets some shit from a fan: "hey, hey, hey! give it to the blonde!" And Pence finally walks.

2 down, bases loaded. Johnson coming up...

After a mound conference, Doumit still gets crossed up or something. Anyway, it's a passed ball that scores Bourn and moves the other runners to 2nd and 3rd.

I'm wondering how you get crossed up when you just went out to the mound for the specific purpose of actually agreeing on what pitch you're going to throw next.

Michaels in for Lee and Lyon in for Byrdak in a double switch.

Doumit shows the only possible reason why he continues to play, doubling off the RCF bullpen wall. No outs, runner on 2nd.

Astros win 6-3!

First win for Daigle since 2004, first 20-save season for Lindstrom, Astros move ahead of the Pirates in team HR (that's for you, Lurch!), and the Wednesday winning streak remains intact.
