Not yet "officially" signed (although his agent has said they've agreed to $1.3M with some reamining terms to be ironed out).  IIRC, I read that he would be in Houston on Thursday to talk.

In checking out the roster I was reminded to watch this kid:  Ruben (AJ) Alaniz.

He was signed after the draft last year.  A high school kid who went undrafted but signed for 160K.

Quote
Astros scout Rusty Pendergrass first saw Alaniz during a tryout in South Texas in June, and the team made a run to sign him that night. The Astros waited to see Alaniz pitch in a game with a travel team out of Dallas, and soon other teams were on his trail....Heck said both Pendergrass and East Coast scouting supervisor Clarence Johns believe Alaniz has the stuff to be a Major League starter. His fastball has been clocked at 94-mph, and he has a plus curve ball.

He was to report to the GCL after his signing but I see no sign of him pitching in a game.
Always ready to go to a game.

Foltynewicz began his pro career today, going 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO.  LINK

As noted in Bob Sutton's Appalachian League notebook (LINK, h/t Astros County) Foltynewicz will be the 5th starter for Greeneville and was expected to throw only 25 pitches today.

He'll be limited to 25 pitches in his first game and will work his way up to longer stints.  "We're going to go slowly with him and build him up," Greeneville manager Ed Romero said.  Foltynewicz said he's on board with the pace of the development, even though it will be a change from his recently concluded high school days.  "They said they were going to take it easy on me," he said. "I'm going to stick right to [the plan]."

Nice piece, worth the read.

21 year old lefty Angel Gonzalez (signed 2007) pulled after 6 innings of no hit ball in the first game of a double header. Team lost the no-no in the 7th, but won the game.  LINK

ETA: Bubby Williams also with his 3rd HR of the season (4 games).

I was able to make the drive up to Kingsport for the games tonight.  Gonzalez had a very rough start but recovered nicely.  He threw mostly fastballs (about 75%).  He was supposed to have a pitch limit of 75 or 5 innings.  However, the minor league pitching coordinator, Britt Burns, was in the house and gave permission for one more inning but not the second extra inning.

The hits given up by Hagen were hard line drives.

The homers:
Medrono's - huge fly ball that was half way up the light standard when it went over the fence in straight away left.
Nideffer - solid fly ball out to left center.
Williams - hooking line drive down the left field line.

Nideffer made a nice play on a high throw at first.  Nothing remarkable about the defense in the first game.

Nash is struggling at the plate.  Had one good at bat where he battled back from being down 0-2 and worked a walk but otherwise, not very impressive.

In game 2, the starter was Alaniz not Castillo as MILB is reporting.  He went deep in the count alot and reached his pitch count in the 2nd.  He had several at bats were batters kept fouling pitches off.  It also appeared he was tipping one of his pitches.  The first inning two of the hits were on the nose and pulled into right field.  It appeared they knew what was coming.

The Homers:
Wallace - nice opp. field shot to right
Nideffer - fly ball to straight away left

Wallace DH both games.  He gave several long looks at umps on called pitches.  Not the way to win friends when you will be spending time behind the plate this year.

Alaniz's balk was due to his foot getting caught on something on the mound.  He never released the ball.  Gonzalez had a similar issue in the first game.  His foot caught something and the pitch went to the back stop.  Luckily no runners were on at the time.

Bullock's move to first is a borderline balk every time.  He got away with 3 throw overs before being called for a balk.

Also not reported in the box score is that Mike DiFelice (K-Mets manager) was tossed during line up exchanges for the second game.  He wasn't on the bench during the game and didn't coach 3rd.  But he did come out of the tunnel to argue that Bullock was balking.  Umpire backed him toward the tunnel and he went.  The next move Bullock made was called a balk.

We left during the top of the 5th.

The Astros players were doing a lot of cat call style whistling back and forth.  It seemed it was their style of chatter.   A fielder would whistle and players on he bench or in the bullpen would whistle back.

This team looks better than several of the last few years teams.
Always ready to go to a game.

He is off to a hot start at the plate.  He did a good job with Gonzo when he got wild last night. All three C at G'ville are probably long shots to ever make it to houston but he is the best of the 3 long shots IMO (Granted I haven't seen Wallace behind the plate yet.)

McCurdy is very small for a catcher.

How exactly do you get pitched at the lineup exchange?  Earl Weaver is impressed.

He had said "what are you looking at Ben" to the home plate ump after a K looking in the 7th of game #1.  I was sitting on the first base side and he was on in the 3rd base coaches box.  The ump didn't toss him at that time even though he was 1. questioning balls and strikes & 2. showing up the ump.  IMO he should have been tossed then.

30 minutes later at the meeting at home plate, he comes out and says something before the Greeneville manager even gets to the plate.  Next thing I know he is walking back into the club house.  The next time he was seen was when Bullock was trying to pick the guy off first.  He came out of the runway to the club house to argue that Bullock was balking.

Gotta love minor league ball!

I must've just been hallucinating Tuesday night.  I swear I saw Alaniz warming up but I missed the announced line ups.  So it must have been J. Castillo I saw pitch.

Yes!  I had a friend at the game.  It was ugly.  Not much went right.

Here is the script of a 12 run inning:

    * Drew Lee singles on a line drive to center fielder Bryce Lane.
    * John Spatola singles on a line drive to right fielder Emilio King. Drew Lee to 3rd.
    * Daniel Black hits a sacrifice fly. Fielding error by left fielder Telvin Nash. Drew Lee scores. John Spatola to 3rd. Daniel Black to 2nd.
    * Tyler Saladino singles on a line drive to right fielder Emilio King. John Spatola scores. Daniel Black to 3rd.
    * Michael Schwartz walks. Tyler Saladino to 2nd.
    * Rangel Ravelo reaches on force attempt, throwing error by second baseman Pedro Feliz. Daniel Black scores. Tyler Saladino scores. Michael Schwartz to 3rd.
    * Chase Blackwood walks. Rangel Ravelo to 2nd.
    * Pitcher Change: Jamaine Cotton replaces Ricardo Batista.
    * Qualon Millender strikes out swinging.
    * Jordan Keegan singles on a line drive to left fielder Telvin Nash. Michael Schwartz scores. Rangel Ravelo scores. Chase Blackwood to 2nd.
    * Drew Lee singles on a line drive to center fielder Bryce Lane. Chase Blackwood scores. Jordan Keegan to 2nd.
    * John Spatola strikes out swinging.
    * Daniel Black walks. Jordan Keegan to 3rd. Drew Lee to 2nd.
    * Tyler Saladino reaches on fielding error by third baseman Jhonny Medrano. Jordan Keegan scores. Drew Lee to 3rd. Daniel Black to 2nd.
    * Michael Schwartz hits a grand slam (1) to right center field. Drew Lee scores. Daniel Black scores. Tyler Saladino scores.
    * Rangel Ravelo flies out to right fielder Emilio King.

That's 12 runs on 6 hits, 3 errors and 3 walks.
Always ready to go to a game.

Official scorer said 3.  But I don't see how.  I would have said 2 as well.  Lee & Spatola are definitely earned.  If you take out the errors, here is how I see it playing out.

* Drew Lee singles on a line drive to center fielder Bryce Lane.
    * John Spatola singles on a line drive to right fielder Emilio King. Drew Lee to 3rd.
    * Daniel Black hits a sacrifice fly to Telvin Nash for out #1.  Lee scores. John Spatola to 2nd on the throw home.
    * Tyler Saladino singles on a line drive to right fielder Emilio King. John Spatola scores.
    * Michael Schwartz walks. Tyler Saladino to 2nd.
    * Rangel Ravelo reaches on force attempt. Tyler Saladino to 3rd. Michael Schwartz out at 2nd (since you can't assume the double play).
    * Chase Blackwood walks. Tyler Saladino still at 3rd
    * Pitcher Change: Jamaine Cotton replaces Ricardo Batista.
    * Qualon Millender strikes out swinging.

I only see 2 there.
Always ready to go to a game.

Was there last night for the 4th (straight G-astros lost).  Record crowd (3753) and impressive fire works.  Astros pitched well save for one bad inning.  In the top of the 3rd, Angel Gonzalez walked the first batter.  Then with one out, tried to pick the runner off first.  The runner went back standing and as a result, first baseman Nidiffer couldn't handle the throw.  Result was runner at 3rd and throwing error charged to pitcher.  Sac fly next batter, followed by walk, double, homer, single, fly out.  Gonzo still looked pretty good.  In the other 4 innings he pitched, he only gave up one run and now walks.

Greeneville's offense belongs on a milk carton.  They have now scored 3 runs in 4 games.  The only well struck balls of the night belonged to Nidiffer.  He was robbed by a leaping catch at the wall in the second.  He followed that up with a double ripped down the line in the 4th.

Bubby Williams who started the season very hot went 3 for 4 at swinging at the first pitch he saw in an at bat.  How ever the results of the at bats were strike out looking, ground out to short, strike out swinging and ground out to third.  Due to his eagerness at the plate, he was in a hole every time up.

Medrano had one good hit in the first when he tool a ball opposite field when it appeared he was fooled on the pitch.  He contributed 2 of the G-Stros 10 K's.

Let's hope they come out of this funk soon.  It is amazing the difference a week can make.  These were the same two pitchers who started last week when I travelled to Kingsport to watch the team for the first time this year.  Not quite as excited as I was last time.
Always ready to go to a game.

Ed Romero on the G-Stros 5 game skid:

Quote
"I think our approach to the plate is not the same," Romero said. "We are not attacking the fast ball. We are swinging at breaking balls and bad pitches. I think the guys are pressing a little bit. Maybe that could be part of it."

Description of Nash's homer:

Quote
Leading off the bottom of the fifth, Greeneville's Telvin Nash took the first pitch he saw deep with a towering homer that hit the lights in left field and bounced back onto the field to tie the game at 2-2.

I have been to four G-stros games this year, I have seen Angel Gonzalez start 3 times.  I gotta get there more than every five days.  The G-stros and the Pulaski Mariners waited out an one and a half hour "rain" delay (it didn't rain for much of it be a second system was supposed to be coming but it never did).  The good guys won 14-12.  The game featured 5 home runs (3 by the Astros), 6 hit batters (only 2 by Astros pitchers), 7 errors (2 by the Astros), a bases loaded squeeze play that was set up by a dropped third strike that allowed a runner to reach first.

Observations:

1. Nash can hit the ball a mile when he connects.  He hit a towering blast to right center tonight that cleared the fence with not too much to spare.  He has hit 3 homers in his last 5 games.  He is 6 for 19 during that stretch.  Much improved over his .203 average for the season.

2.  Merritt plays a smooth short stop.  He made several nice plays.  He also laid down a great squeeze bunt with the bases loaded that plated the winning run.

3.  Medrano can crush the ball and is a hitter.  He has crushed Pulaski pitching over the 3 game series.  He was 7 for 17 with a double, 2 homers and 7 RBI.

4.  I don't know that I have seen Wallace behind the plate.  He has been DH in almost every game I have seen.  He joined Medrano & Nash as the 3rd Astro to hit a homer in back to back games tonight.  He also blistered Pulaski pitching going 7 for 14 with 2 HR and 6 RBI.

5.  The stolen bases on Williams were more stolen on the pitcher than on the catcher.  Esp with Bullock on the mound.  He has a good pick off move but once you have it figured out, it takes him a long to deliver the ball.

Fun game to watch.

Always ready to go to a game.

Good, quick game tonight. A 6-0 Win!

Folty's line: 4IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
Velasquez's line: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K

3 dingers for the g-stros.  Wallace, Nidiffer, & Medrano.  2010 G-stros have hit 24 in 22 games.  Compare that to the 2009 G-stros who hit 37 in 68 games.
Always ready to go to a game.

Love to see that from those two. Any quick takes on them from tonight's game (other than they looked good...)?

Wallace is hitting 330 and has 6 homers in 73 ABs.   The most homers he hit in a season at UofH was 10 in 180 ABs.

He also caught last night.

I was busy at home but talked to a guy who was there who said Folty looked "very good".  He didn't elaborate.

Was only drafted once per the Baseball-Reference database.

[And on the things I don't appreciate side: seeing Greeneville leave Alaniz in long enough yesterday to amass 12H, 10R, 10ER in his 4th professional start... LINK]

ALaniz got shelled last night.  He got two quick outs on hard hit balls but after that, he allowed 6 runs and never got out of the first.   6 ER on 5 hits and 2 walks.  No K's.  If he keeps getting hit this hard, they might have to send him down to the GCL.

Greeneville's defense was atrocious last night.  Game one Garrish throws a pick off move into right field.  Garcia threw away a double play ball and was charged on a hard luck error on a short hop with a runner crossing in front of him.  Should have made the play but it was tough.  Game 2 Hector Rodriguez made a pretty good play on a swinging bunt but tried to do too much with the throw and it went wild.  The second error was a common 3 hopper to 3rd he mishandled.  Rorabaugh caught an easy come backer with a runner at 1st.  Tried to start a double play and threw it over the short stops head into center.  That same inning, the had the infield in, a one hopper was hit to Merritt at short.  He comes home with the ball and short hops Bubby Williams, who can't hold it and the runner was safe.  A decent throw and he is out by 3 steps.  It was ugly.

The only defensive star on the night was Emilio King.  He took great routes to balls in right, covered good territory and showed off a pretty strong arm once to keep a runner from tagging.

Offensively they were 3 for 13 with runners in scoring position.  That about says it all.  Not pretty.
Always ready to go to a game.

Alaniz reverts back to Dr. Jekyl form tonight, going 5.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 SO in win.  LINK

Telvin Nash went 0-2, R, 2 BB on the evening, but somewhere along the line* managed to raise his average to .257.

*Somewhere along the line evidently being his last 10 games where he's gone 12-34, 9 R, 2 2B, 4 HR, 8 RBI, 7 BB, 10 SO. .353 AVG, .463 OBP, .765 SLG, 1.228 OPS.

Looked at scoreboard today and Nash has hit another HR (totaling 5 for the season).  Seems like the light may have come on for him finely.   Started the season with a poor batting average and is up to .263. Not certain about strikeout numbers though.

Yet another reason why the "hold" is a useless statistic... LINK

Streilein (H, 3): 1.2 IP,  6 H, 5 R, 5 ER

Anyway...

Foltynewicz: 5.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO, 0 HR (5.03 ERA)
Nidiffer (.324) and Wallace (.333) each hit their 8th HR of the season. Bubby Williams (.271) hit his 5th.

Nash continues to Mash hitting his 7th homer last night.

Astros signed a Braves cast off:

Inf Chris Lovett - Selected by the Braves in the 12th round of the 09 draft out of Columbia CC in TN.  He spent the 09 season in GCL hitting .231 in 35 games (33 at SS).  He then was sent to Rome of the Sally league to start this year.  He hit .239 in 30 games (11 @ 2nd & 13 @ 3rd) there before being released.  He is 21.

Johnny Medrano has not played since the 16th.  On that night, he slid into home and bruised his elbow.  We went back out to warm up for the next inning and had to come out of the game due to the pain.  His bat has been missed.

Report from the game tonight:

1.  Nash just missed his 8th homer by about 10 feet tonight.  It was an shot to right center that died on the track.  This kid looks impressive right now.

2. Got to see Velasquez pitch for the first time.  He throws very hard but had trouble throwing his change & curve for strikes.  Therefore, hitters sat on fastball.  The double was a smash just right of center that hit just below the yellow line on the wall.  The homer was a no doubter that hit off the scoreboard in Left center.

3. First batter of the game for Bristol hit a nubber down the 3rd base line.  It tight roped the line and appeared to roll foul.  Lovett picked it up and the ump signaled fair.  That runner stole second and scored on the double later in the inning.

4. Merritt's error was rough.  He was charging a hopper and it hit off the heel of his glove.

5.  Bubby Williams has a bruise on his wrist from what the umpire said was a foul ball.  Bubby contends he was hit by the pitch.

6. Frawley looks more like Ichabod Crane out there than an athlete.  He throws all sorts of junk for strikes.  He was on tonight. Getting 5 k's in 2 IP.

7.  Garcia left the game in the top of the first.  He was wearing a brace on his glove hand and it appeared to be slid into on the stolen base.

8.  Jhonny Medrano should be back in the line up tomorrow.  He gave a thumbs up on his arm.

9.  Lovette was not impressive in his debut.

10. It was nice to see the Astros win one late after losing the last two games in extra innings.

The astros have played 37 games.  16 have been decided by 2 runs or less.  The astros are 10-6 in those games.
Always ready to go to a game.

Is Nash athletic enough to possibly hold down a corner spot, or does he have DH/firstbaseman's build?

He could hold down a linebacker spot.  he has a VERY athletic frame.  Broad shoulders/chest, tapered waist, big arms and thighs, skinny lower legs.  Appears to be lots of quick twitch muscles there.

On a side note,  it was fun watching him in the dugout in the 9th inning.  He was bouncing with excitement as the runners got in scoring position.  It was fun to see a kid having fun at the ball park.

Nash hit another HR tonight. Foltynewicz started and went 4 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 4 K.

I got to go last night.  Observations:

1. Folty throws hard.  He has a very easy delivery.  My unofficial pitch count was 73 in 4 innings.  50 were for strikes.  He threw first pitch strike to 12 of 17 batters faced.  Alot of swings and misses on his curve.

2.  Medrano made his return to the line up as a DH.  He looked awkward in his first few at bats but shook the rust off for a hit late in the game.

3. 7th inning bunt defense was an issue.  Either they had a cover 1 play on and the bunt was perfectly placed down the line or Niddifer blew it and didn't charge the bunt.  Based on the fact the second baseman was moving to cover first, I think he blew it.  The next batter laid down a sac bunt and Bristol had runners on 2nd & 3rd with 1 out instead of having runners at 2nd with 1 out.  This led to a big inning.  Niddifer is playing first base for the first time in his career.  He played catcher in college.

4.  Nash's homer was a towering shot to left center.  Merritt's was a line shot toward the line in left.

5. Winning run scored on a routine grounder booted by the B-sox SS.
Always ready to go to a game.

Saw my 3rd win in a row.  The Astros swept Bristol last night.  A few observations:

Quezada was struggling at the beginning of his start.  Threw a lot of pitches in the first inning.  Was finishing high and leaving balls up.  He is a big man (nickname heard from the dugout "el grande").  He threw 27 pitches in the first & 10 were balls. I was expecting his night to be over quickly.  Ended up throwing 82 pitches/56 for strikes and pitching into the 6th. This was aided by a 9 pitch 2nd and a 5 pitch 5th.  4 of his 9 air outs were infield pops.  The two home run shots were no doubters to right field.

Ryan Humphrey continue to be big at the back end of the line up.  He had two hits and two stolen bases last night.

Lead off man Merritt went 0 for 3 but had two sac flies and a ground out that plated another run for a 3 RBI night.

Greeneville is now 3 games out of the second playoff spot behind Johnson City who comes in to start a 3 game series tonight.

Always ready to go to a game.

Lexington has a shot. Just two back.

Nash with another homer. More than half his hits are extra base hits.  Must have quite a bit of power.

He has a lot of power.  Saw the one he hit tonight it cleared right center.  That is a long way for a right handed hitter.  His homer was the only offense tonight as G-ville lost 5-2

The strike outs by Astros are running together.  But my memory is that he is very aggressive and getting in holes and then having to swing at pitches that aren't strikes trying to protect the plate or being fooled by off speed stuff that he is frozen by.

He is a hard swinger.  In the last few games I have noticed that he goes to bat with his shirt tucked in and when he is on base, it is untucked.  It happened last night on his home run.

Tal witnessed a massacre tonight. 8 runs, 6 earned tagged on Batista in the first.  Game was over at that point.  Final was E-Twins 13 -2.

Nidiffer crushed a two run homer for the only offense from the G-stros.

twins have a 19 year old outfielder named Oswaldo Arcia.  He came into the game leading the league in HR (14), hits (71), RBI (41), total bases (144 -2nd place is 109), and second in the league in doubles, average (.402) and runs scored.  All of this in 45 games.  He was 3 for 3 at the plate and was plunked on the side of the knee and had to be helped off the field.  This guy is probably the player of the year in the appy and his season might have ended.  It was not pretty.

In game one at Danville tonight,  DeShields goes 4-4 tonight with 2 doubles, 2 RBI, one run scored and a walk.  He was thrown out trying to stretch a double to a triple once.

Telvin Nash hits his 10th home and clears the bases with a double for a 4 RBI night.

In game two @ Danville - Gabe Garcia pitches 4 perfect innings, Ryan Cole pitches 2 no hit innings (thanks to an error on R. Garcia), Bryan Streinlein comes in and gets the first two batters of the final inning.  Then walks a batter and allows the first hit of the game.  Comes back and gets the final out for a combined 1 hitter and a 1-0 victory.

DeShields accounted for the lone run.  Reached on a FC, went 1st to 3rd on single and then scored on wild pitch.  Went 1-4 with a bunt single.  Average up over .300 after tonights work.

Now that I have seen him a few times I have been impressed with his bat speed.  Many of the kids here have big looping swings, his is very quick.  I was impressed with his ability to put the ball to the opposite field a few times when needed.

He is extremely fast.

I have seen him in 3 games and have seen him misplay slow rolling balls on the ground 3 times.  I don't know if this is a focus thing or an effort thing.  I would expect if he plays at 2nd, he will be more focused because of more action.

My son got to go to an autograph event where DDJ was signing.  He was very personable and confident in that setting.  My son noticed the silly bands on his arm and made a comment.  He said his little sister had given them to him.  The other players made comments along the lines of "that what he wants us to believe." He took the ribbing in a good natured way.  I came away more impressed with his maturity after that interaction.
