2010 Draftees and Status
« on: June 11, 2010, 06:30:42 pm »
Draftee information has been compiled from MLB.com. LINK. Signings to date include 16th rounder Chris Wallace on 6/9 (Levine LINK), 8 on 6/10 (Levine LINK), 7 (+1 undrafted free agent signing) on 6/11 (Levine LINK), and 1 player commitment to sign (Jermaine Cotton).  Given a number of quick signings, I put this together in  a rush and will be double checking the info in the next couple of days.  In the interim, please let me know if anything is incorrect, I've missed a nickname, etc.

Additionally, for the moment I've left the scouting column blank.  I'll be working on this for the next week'sh, so expect this to stay blank for a bit.

As always, please feel free to includes signing updates, rumors, etc. in this thread.  The more info the better!

In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

Per McTaggart: The Astros have reached an agreement on a signing bonus with first-round Draft pick Mike Foltynewicz [19th overall pick] worth $1.3 million, his advisor Bobby Witt told MLB.com on Friday.  LINK

I'll add it after a couple of more signings...

Astros 'officially' sign 3 more players today.  LINK (via MLB Trade Rumors)

15th round pick Jermaine Cotton (as was previously noted, though 'unofficial');
24th round pick Adam Champion (insert your McLane 'want to be a champion today' joke here...); and
40th round pick Jeremiah Minors.

This 'officially' brings the count to 19 (of 52) draftees signed, though Foltynewicz' advisor has noted that they have reached an agreement with the Astros as well, bringing the total to 20 of 52 draftees signed + 1 non-drafted free agent signing.

MLB Draft Twitter account noting the Astros officially sign "Michael Kvasnicka (1A); Roberto Pena (7); Adam Bailey (23); Jacke Healey (27)". LINK.  Jonathan Mayo (via Twitter) notes that Kvasnicka signed for $936,000.

That brings the total 'officially signed to 25, with 19th overall pick Foltynewics having (mostly) agreed to sign as well.

As always, if you see another signee post it in the thread...

Does it seem like an extraordinarily high number/percentage of draftees have signed for being just one week after the draft?

Seems to be Heck's MO. Sign 'em early and get them on the field.  They signed 22 of the 51 picks within the first 6 days last year (25 of 52 in the first 7 days this year).

I find it really interesting that with all their signings so far, they still have 3 Seniors who have not signed.  I always figured those should be the quickest cause they have no other strings left... this assumes they WANT to try to play Pro ball.  Well and of course if they are not still in the CWS.

Its going to be a bit still before Velasquez or Grills can sign.  From Levine: LINK

Second-rounder Vincent Velasquez can't sign yet because he doesn't graduate from high school until June 22. Also, 10th-rounder Evan Grills from Ontario, Canada, is still waiting to start final exams

Our 38th rounder out of Plano West High School just committed to Texas. This, likely, makes it very difficult to sign this young man.

Being a Texas State fan, I can give a first hand assessment on Matison Smith, as we faced him twice this year.

He is a soft toss right handed pitcher.  Who won't blow you away with any pitch, but keeps guys off balance with a wide array of different pitches.  He reminds me alot of of right handed version of Jamie Moyer.

DeShields Sr. is hoping a deal gets done between Houston and DeShields Jr. "in the next few days.” LINK

Players also take longer to sign these days. Many wait until the deadline in August to come to terms with their clubs. Not so for DeShields in 1987.  “I was on the plane the day after (high school) graduation, you know what I mean?” DeShields said. “There wasn’t any negotiating period and all that. It was sign, I’m on the plane. Now, the higher picks, they’re all kind of posturing, waiting for one another to sign. It’s just a waiting game right now. But I’m looking forward to him getting his career started. I’m hoping something will happen here in the next few days.”

No new signing notes, but Footer will be hosting a chat session with Heck tomorrow (that will run later as a video) and is soliciting questions (more like begging...).  Send questions to [email protected].

Two more down...  Per Footer (via Twitter):

The Astros have signed two more draft picks: 10th rounder LHP Evan Grills and 30th rounder OF Kellen Kiilsgaard.  The Astros have signed 28 draft picks, including 16 from the first 20 rounds.

Will update chart later...

Velasquez signs (per him, Astros area scout Tim Costic, and about 100 friends and family there to witness the signing, but not according to the Astros yet...).  LINK

"We had to get him to believe that (pitching) was best for him," Costic said.  "It was hard to hear that. I grew up playing shortstop and hitting," Velasquez admitted.

Costic said when the Astros invited Velasquez to Houston for a draft prospects workout, members of the Astros front office, including general manager Ed Wade, were impressed when Velasquez struck out seven of the nine draft prospects he faced.

Costic described Velasquez as having an "above average fastball, 92 to 94 mph. He's got an above average changeup. And he's got an average curveball that's only going to get better."  ***  "I'd like to see him have some good control and have a good strikeout-to-walk ratio," Costic said. "He's used to pitching every seven days. It will be a change, but I know he'll be able to handle it."

The Astros sign 3 on Wednesday (2 officially): 2nd rounder Vincent Velasquez, 10th rounder Evan Grills, and 30th rounder Kellen Kiilsgaard.  That brings the total signed to 29, including 17 of the first 22 picks (20 rounds).  The Astros have also signed 4 non-drafted free agents.

Sr. wants Jr. to play

Quote
And he isn’t the only member of his family embarking on a new career. DeShields’ eldest son, Delino Jr., was drafted in the first round (just like dad) earlier this month by the Houston Astros. Junior has yet to sign a contract.

“I’m trying to patient with this process,” the senior DeShields said, looking at his watch. “My plan for him this summer was to play. I want him to get what he deserves, what’s fair, but at the same time, the most important thing in my mind, is for him to play.”
Always ready to go to a game.

Footer hosted a video chat with Bobby Heck.

http://houston.astros.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=9281571&c_id=hou&topic_id=8879000

And it was awful.  Not Footer or Heck's fault, just the questions were pitiful (and I got the sense she didn't have a lot to work with in that regard).

At least they weren't as bad as the questions he was given during his live chat with JJO last year (trade requests, etc).  But, I'm sure she was hoping for more than an 8 minute chat.

BP with a nice Q&A with 4th round pick Bobby Doran about transitioning to pro ball.  LINK

Also, the Astros evidently paid 41st round pick Bryce Lane signed for 15th round money (whatever that is...).  LINK (h/t Astros County)

Speaking of money, here is a breakdown on what the (divulged) signing bonuses are to date.

Foltynewicz, Mike [(1)-19]: $1,305,000
Kvasnicka, Michael [(1S)-33]: $936,000
Velasquez, Vincent (2)-58]: $655,800
Doran, Robert [(4)-123]: $237,700
Heath, Ben [(5)-153]: $160,000
Pena, Roberto [(7)-213]: $150,000
Buchanan, Jake [(8)-243]: $120,000
Shirley, Thomas [(9)-273]: $100,000
Scott, Jordan [(14)-423]: $150,000
Cotton, Jamaine [(15)-453]: $75,000

TOTALS: $3,889,500

3rd round pick Austin Wates appears to have an agreement in principal to sign with the Astros.  LINK (h/t to 'Cats Corner. I'll repeat myself here... if you want info on the ValleyCats it is an EXCELLENT resource.  The last blog entry beiong no exception. LINK)

n Virginia Tech coach Pete Hughes said that All-ACC outfielder Austin Wates has agreed in principle with Houston, which selected him in the third round but the Astros have not made an announcement.

I'd wondered how the potential for hard slotting and/or a world wide draft in 2013 was being considered by the JaCoby Jones camp (after all, advising clients means discussing risks, and potentially significant changes to the draft certainly fit the 'risk' category).  It comes as no surprise that such considerations are not being openly discussed by the Boras camp, but it certainly is playing a role as to whether or not (unrepresented) Astros 32nd round pick Austin Chrismon will sign with the team.  LINK

Quote
Chrismon, who graduated earlier this month, won't discuss dollar amounts. He will say that at the moment, he has one figure in mind and the Astros have another. So what happens next is, he auditions. Twice, in fact, in the next couple of weeks.  The first will come Thursday in an 18-under tournament in Atlanta. Next week, he'll come back to throw in a 17-under tournament. The Astros will have scouts and front-office brass in attendance.
***
One factor on Chrismon's mind is the possibility of a worldwide draft. That's been on the rumor mill for years. If it happens by 2013, the next time he'd be available for the draft, Chrismon could see his stock slip.  A greater possibility is a slotting system. That would set signing bonuses based on where the player was selected.  "I probably have a better chance of signing and getting the money I want now than in the future," he said. "And if they go to a worldwide draft, it's possible I wouldn't get drafted (in '13).

JaCoby Jones camp

Total fools if they turn down 1.5 milhouse.  He'll need 1st round to beat that in 3 years.  Not to mention staying healthy.  And if Carlos Lee Jr. runs into him on the field, he'll never see a dime.

Only thing I could see him holding back for is if he truely wants to play football.  (Which will also risk a big injury)

Football or Scott Boras--the latter more likely than the former IMO.

Perhaps Jacoby Jones will be signing after all: LINK

Decent Q&A between Astros County and Randy Rosetta, who covers LSU baseball for the Baton Rouge Advocate.

While JaCoby has spoken to some media members in Mississippi and said he’s committed to playing for LSU, his silence over here and the fact that he hasn’t made a public announcement is a strong signal that the Astros are still very much in play.

Will we get a one-hour special on the announcement, with proceeds going to support the Astros urban baseball academy?

FWIW (which, granted is about zero - okay, exactly zero), every day that passes without Delino Jr in an Astros MiLB uni is another day I think I'd rather the Astros have 9th overall pick in the '11 draft...

Except then they'd have almost no leverage with that player- ala Nationals picking the signable Drew Storen.

Leverage is obviously an issue, and might cost a little more, but no reason why the Astros could't get a legit player with that pick in the crop of kids that is the '11 draft.  Again, a team is usually better served to sign the pick, but it doesn't mean that I can't act childishly and whine about it until that happens.

By the way, evidently he's looking for an above slot sign.  Guess I should add a DUH to that, but anyway...

"2010 Draft Review: Houston Astros" from Klima at Baseball Beginnings.

I didn’t hear too much about the Houston Astros draft, which immediately makes me believe that they scouted for themselves instead of letting the publications scout for them. What I see is a pretty solid group of players.

What proportion of first-rounders do end up signing?

Most all of them.

1st rd pick signings since 2003 (not including supp rd picks):

All signed in 2003, 2005-2007.
Wade Townsend did not sign with BAL in 2004.
Aaron Crow did not sign with WAS and Gerritt Cole did not sign with NYY in 2008.
Matt Purke did not sign with the TEX and LeVon Washington did not sign with TB in 2009.

I think I saw that the #10 overall pick recently signed, so maybe having that figure as a frame of reference was enough of a nudge to get Deshields to go ahead and sign. Dominos and what not.

So with DeShields agreeing, are the Astros pretty much done with this class?

Wates mostly and Plutko though he's very unlikely is about all that's left.

I am sure hope they can convince Jone$ to join the organization.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

It would be a nice add to the ever growing talented middle infielder list:

Jio, Altuve, Cartwright, Villar, DeShields, and (possibly) Jone$

25th rounder Rodney Quintero signs -

His JC Coach is not real happy about it but likes his stuff:
Quote
“It is disappointing any time you lose a guy and you lose him late,” the coach said. “I felt like Rodney  had a chance to be a first rounder next year. I’ve had two first rounders, and I’ve worked with a couple other guys who went in the first round, and (Quintero) is in the same category with those guys....“I wouldn’t surprised to see him in big leagues in a few years,” Johnson said. “He’s got the arm strength. He’s an explosive, athletic pitcher, which you don’t see very often. He’s got explosive legs, a quick arm, and his fastball sneaks up on you. He can get it up to 95 (mph), but he could be guy you see throwing 97 or 98 at some point...“It’s there, it’s just a matter of him developing secondary pitches, gaining some confidence, and having some more success,”

assigned to Greeneville
Always ready to go to a game.

apparantly he thought twice about his tweet.  It's not there.

Thought he might have been in Houston for a pre-deadline deal physical (which turns out to have been a good WAG).  Thinking a deal will still get done though.

Highlights from McTaggart's draft signing update

Heck:

"We're exclusive to pursuing the five players at this point in time.  Others that are unsigned, outside of that five, either we've determined to continue evaluations and are better off going to school or we've been unable to bridge a gap between what our evaluated value is compared to how they value themselves. Some just said they'd rather go to school, and that's typical of your later round drafts when you take fliers on for numbers."

2 of the 5 are Austin Wates and  Rodney Quintero (and since Quintero has already told the Jackson County Floridian that he's signed I think it's pretty safe to say he is a done deal).

Heck on progress with Wates:

"We're putting a lot of time and effort into [getting Wates signed].  We wanted to make sure the physical aspect was done because on a deadline deal, if you don't get it, you're unable to get it done in time. Then it's all buyer beware."

McTaggart didn't mention who the other 3 were, except to say that they weren't JaCoby Jones.  Per Heck:

"We have a high value on him, but it's not close to where it's going to take for him to forgo LSU."

Why is Wates such a tough sign? Thinking that he'll go higher next year? Tough to lose him, but we'd get a compensation pick for him, even if it's unprotected. We wouldn't get one for Plutko though, right?

Guesses on the other players they're working on? With Wates, Plutko, and Quintero, that leaves 2 more, right? Davis Duren?

Compensation for unsigned players only goes through the 3rd round.  So, the cutoff is Wates.  The Astros would get a 3S pick.

My wild ass guess is that RHP Aelxis Garza from McAllen (44th rd) is one of the two.  Again, a WAG.

Per McTaggart (via Twitter):

Astros sign 39th-round pick Krishawn Holly, a RHP from Mid Carolina High School. He will go to the GCL.

So that is one of the two unknowns that the Astros were trying to sign....

Are there a lot more over slot signings this year or does it just seem like it?

Barret Loux is a free agent on September 1.

Reading between the lines there was some serious disagreement regarding his physical.  So which team does he want to go to?

This was a tacit admittal that Arizona was very seriously attempting to fuck him over.

From someone on the inside, the only "disagreement" was from Arizona's physical.  Loux took independent physicals both before and after the draft and NO ONE else saw what the AZ doc saw.

He has interest in staying home (Houston), but has no idea if the interest would be mutual.

I hope the Astros/Heck take a flyer on him.

He's not going to be free, but his salary demands were never an issue.  He was ready to sign at slot, and then offered to sign below slot when Arizona balked.

On one hand, seems like a wise move by Selig.  Probably prevents a lawsuit, really helps out Loux, and probably doesn't set a precedent (I assume this won't happen often).  Would like to have seen some justice against Arizona, but that would go beyond a tacit admission.

On the other, it does seem like an admission that the system allows a player to be fucked over, implying it needs a fix.

Eh... I see the fact that they are only getting a supplemental vs the 6th pick next year as adequate justice.  You can't prove Arizona's intent.  But you can ensure they don't receive unjust benefit from either duplicity or incompetence, whichever the case may be.

I guess I don't understand.  I thought AZ getting the supplemental meant that they were getting the high pick (6A) in the next years draft, in addition to their other likely high pick.

I read that as supplemental first round as opposed to equivalent compensation, 6A, for not signing that pick.

What am I missing?  Am I reading correctly that some don't think the AZ doctor really saw something, but for other reasons they were using that as an excuse?  What other reasons, especially if he was willing to sign below slot?

He wanted to play pro ball. And knowing his family through a friend, he was willing to do a make good type contract just to get started.

He and his family were not expecting him to go in the first round, especially not in the top 10. So, at or below slot, he was going to make more than he expected to. He really just wants to play pro ball.

The former AZ GM overruled his scouts and push for Loux to get drafted over the protests of a lot of the rest of the front office. For whatever reason, they don't want Loux and would rather have the pick back.

Well, if that is true, then it was an even better move by Selig.  He doled out justice to all parties, and sent a signal that there is no benefit to this crap in the future.

Lurch,  I don't know what AZ's reasons were.  I had heard that maybe it had to do with their state of flux at draft time (interim GM) and that they basically were voiding their pick (delaying it to next year).  Maybe they are going broke.  I don't know, but not even offering slot, or signing him for less than slot (which he would reportedly have agreed to) is acting in bad faith, imo.  Besides, his injury history was known and if they really feel he is damaged, they owed it to him to do due diligence prior to the draft and pass him over.  I am having a hard time envisioning any scenario where AZ's actions look defensible.

As I read it, it's a combination of the things you speculated about Arizona's state of mgmt/finances in addition to projections that next year's talent pool is very deep.  If they get 6A, then they just hosed the other teams picking 7 and later.  Every team disappointed in a current year's draft pool will now have a roadmap on how to defer a 1st round pick to the following year, if that is preferable.   I would hope, "HOPE", that Bud recognizes the loophole and, assuming it's unintended, asserts his significant powers to prevent teams from benefitting from this tactic.

Yeah, not really fair to those at 7 or later next year.  Perhaps he could have said that the team that picks up Loux will give AZ their second round pick for next year.  Penalty to AZ and reasonable upgrade trade for some team I would assume.

Can't say I'm fond of that compromise.

It reads to me that Wade has a number or range in mind, given Loux's arm is fine, and that he'll try to sign him.

Signing Loux would definitely be a plus.  I think it could get interesting if Loux goes out and proves healthy.  The D-Backs make it sound like his injuries aren't small.  If he starts holding tryouts in September without treatment, with clubs examining him and finding nothing wrong, it is going to look awfully bad on the D-Backs part.

w/ 6A, Arizona will have to draft a guy with high signability with that pick.  If they don't sign him then they lose it.  I know this goes without saying, i just don't think that AZ got a helluva deal since they will be somewhat limited in their negotions with who they take at 6A in 2011....the draft pick will have a lot of leverage.

Either way, the disparity among what Byrnes thought of Loux and what the rest of the AZ org thought of Loux must have been pretty large to not sign him and blame it on the supposed injury
