Can you provide a professional's view on the upcoming hurricane season?

The local talking heads are already peeing themselves because it's potentially going to be an active one.

I was thinking about that the other day.  One of the worst possible scenarios is a Gulf hurricane that picks up a lot of that oil and dumps it inland.

Ive read that this is a very light oil that evaporates and dissipates more easily than a refined oil like the valdez dumped.  While pushing it inland is certainly bad, I wonder if storms might also churn/spread it in a way that allows it to evaporate more quickly

Of course, storms also mean that there cant be crews out there cleaning it up...

According to a scientist I heard on NPR, the oil on the water may disperse or weaken a hurricane.  Or, because the oil on top of the water absorbs the sunlight, it makes the water a lot warmer which will make the hurricane even fiercer.

I admittedly don't know anything about oil, but apparently now they've got the lighter-colored oil on the surface and clouds of darker oil down below.  Don't know what that translates into with hurricanes, but they did say they were concerned about the darker oil.

Look to the southeast, not at the big, towering storms on the ridges to the northwest.  These storms poping to the east will fill in but better coverage will be as the day/evening go on.  What time is your game?

Today's the day.  Hurricane season has officially started.  Who's your favorite new named storm?

Hermine is just too Harry Potterish for my tastes.  It would suck to get hit by something named Hermine.  Igor, however, is an awesome name for a Hurricane.  Just think about all great Young Frankestein jokes we can make.  "If you are evacuating, walk this way."

Otto is pretty cool too.

Totally off topic, my kids are in gymnastics.  There's a 4 yr old girl in the class who's name is Hermione.  I must refrain from jumping to the conclusion that her parents are HUGE Harry Potter fans.  Then again, my 4 yr old son's soccer team was named the Gryffons, and yes also Harry Potter inspired and no, not my doing.

I'm thinking Nicole will be a storm that looks really impressive at first, but as it gets closer, one begins to realize there is not a whole lot to it behind the facade.  Mostly just some high altitude winds, strip the leaves off the trees.  A stripper, in other words.

Hurricane Matthew has a nice ring to it.  It would be difficult to track, but in the end completely harmless.  Always forgetting where it was headed and losing interest in the whole destruction and, you know, rain and wind stuff.  They chose that name because of me, right?

Don't think twice, it's alright.

Here's a really cool link, freshly published by the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML).  It is a link to the experimental NextGen Hurricane Weather Research and Forecasting Experimental System (HWRF-X)

Links to the product descriptions, program details and project roadmap are sprinkled thougout.

Link ot the actual tool is the flashing "real time forecast" link at the top left.  Enjoy!
