Takes the thinking out of hitting for a while for Lee to have Berkman behind him to protect him.  Better than having free swinger Pence behind you.  Lee will be more selective knowing if they give him nothing to hit, they'll have to face Lance.

Nice.  I'm blind.  Was the runner just loafing or is Bourn really superman?

Didn't think he was loafing.  Bourn was charging hard for the ball and threw it in stride.  Iwamura had to go midway to make sure he wasn't forced out at second if Bourn caught it on the hop.

Myers early inning struggles continue, but gets out of the second with only 1 run scoring.

Luckily there are plenty of empty seats for Pence to throw his bat into.

Berkman ties Reggie Smith at number five all time homeruns by a switch-hitter. Reggie Smith was a damn good ballplayer.

Pirates half of the third

McCutchen singled to right. (Matsui would've got it)
McCutchen caught stealing, catcher to second.
Milledge struck out swinging.
Jones grounded out to first.

still 2 - 1 Astros

Mills on Bourns rare gidp yesterday

"He was very disappointed he [hit into a double play], but I walked up to him and told him, 'Hey, way to swing the bat,'" manager Brad Mills said. "They brought in that lefty in to face him and he put the head of the bat on the ball. For him to do that was nice and it was good see."

Good move by Mills to protect Lee with Berkman and get him some challenge pitches.  Good of Berkman to hit a homerun to prove you're going to have to pitch him very tough. And finally, good of Lee to prove he's going to be very patient and spit at pitches outside the zone and pick on the pitches in his zone.  The results are good so far.

Bourn steals 3B.  Doumit is awful.

That steal of 3B was on the dumbass pitcher, who didn't even look back at Bourn prior to coming to the plate.

Was just a general observation.  He is my backup fantasy catcher.  He has never come off the bench.

Doumit singles to RF, then Clement plays copycat. 2 on, no outs.

LaRoche singles to LF.  Bases loaded.

Church hits a pop fly to shallowish CF.  Runners stay.

Crosby drops a bloop single in front of Bourn. Doumit scores.  LaRoche had started back to first, apparently thinking Bourn would catch it, and is thrown out by Bourn 8-4. 2 outs.

Iwamura grounds out 4-3.

LaRoche simply stood in no man's land between 1st and 2nd, afraid of getting doubled off by Bourn.  Smart on his part because the DP erases the run, while the force out was only out #2.

You've got to play with a certain amount of hunger in this game, especially with Bourn setting the table for you like that.

Pitching change: Brian Burress replaces Brian Bass

Bourn singles past a driving Crosby.

Kepp flies out to CF.

ElCaballo takes 3 straight balls, and Bourn steals second on ball 3 in the dirt, the ball gets away from Doumit and Bourn starts for 3rd, then thinks better of it.  Lee pops out to Milledge in LF.

Bourn at 2nd for Berkman who strikes out swinging.

Missed it: husband changing channels.  McCutchen singles to Feliz.

Milledge hits into a 4-6-3 DP.

Jones hits one to the warning track in LCF, tracked down by SBB.

Pence, Feliz and Towles due up.

Pence singles past a diving Crosby.

Feliz watches strike one, swings at strike two and then Burres throws a WP that allows Pence to advance to 2B.  Feliz then strikes out swinging.

Towles walks.

Manzella smokes one to RF down the line that bounces into the stands. Pence scores Towles to 3rd. There's your run Mr. Happy.

Michaels Ks swinging.

Patti Smiths says to take the Astros with you on vacation.  I wish....

Bourn walks. Bases juiced for Kepp who is hitting .518 with the bases loaded (per Brown).  Keppinger walks.  Towles scores.

And another run for you Mr. Happy-er.

Pitching change.......Lopez in for Pittsburgh.

El Caballo smacks one right to McCutchen in CF.

End 7, Pirates 2, Astros 10

Pitching change: Byrdak in for Sampson

Doumit grounds out Manzella to Berkman.

Clement hits one halfway up the wall on top of Tal's Hill.  Bourn gets it back in to hold him to a double.

LaRoche singles to LF, Clement gets waved home and scores.

Raynor called out on strikes.

Crosby grounds out 6-3.

Berkman grounds out 6-3. Berkman limps badly to first base.  Looks like he twisted his knee on the swing according to the replay.

Pence slaps one up the middle, pitcher took a stab at the ball behind his back, but it gets through for a single.

Feliz grounds into a DP, 6U-3.

Substitutions for the Astros: Sullivan replaces Byrdak, playing in LF; Blum comes in for Lee, playing 1B; Fulchino comes in to pitch (batting 4th in Berkman's spot)

Iwamura grounds out 6-3 on Fulchino's first offering.

McCutchen grounds out 6-3.

Milledge K's swinging.

Mills on Berkman:

"He's fine.  He felt he hyper-extended the knee coming out of the box, but as he ran he realized he was alright.  As he walked in the dugout, he was fine.  He'll be okay to play."

Mills on Myers:

"He didn't want to come out of the game.  That's okay, I don't want guys here who don't want to stay in the game.  He told me "I'm a 120 pitch pitcher".  I said "Well today you're a 90 pitch pitcher"  That didn't go over well with him, but I just thought he was done with the heat and how he was pitching.  Plus I reminded him that other guys needed some work too."

Footer (via Twitter): Puma: "I definitely hyperextended the knee. It's a strength issue - I just don't have the strength in that quad as I do in the other it just grabbed me. It scared me more than anything. But I'm fine. Nothing lingering. I just have to be careful when I run down the line."
