I was unloading some groceries when that happened, and based on the crowd response I thought something bad had happened. Then I turned around and saw this meek little fly ball. What a bunch of idiots.

I am regrettably friends with 1 cub fan (my personal limit).  He texted me to say he was going to the game today as part of bachelor party weekend.  If you stereotype cub fans as follows, you'd be right:

Cubs visor? check
shirtless in the bleachers? check
madras shorts? check
former frat star?  check
aviators? check
10 old styles deep by the 3rd? check
cack-chortler?  check

Towles with a HR off the LF foul pole to lead off the 5th!  Mr .150 to you.
Roy is robbed of a single to RF.  Fontenot makes a very nice grab deep in the hole and his throw beats Roy to first.  1 Out
Kepp grounds out to 2B.  2 Out
Michaels exposes Soriano who drops a fairly routine short fly to LF.
Feliz drives one left center, but caught at the warning track.  3 Out.

3-0 Astros, mid-5

Soto drives a double to the LF wall (the actual wall, not Lee)
Zambrano in to PH (!).  Quickly grounds out to first.  Soto to 3rd.  2 Out.
Theriot Ks looking.  3 Out

Roy with 1488 Ks, passes Dierker for 3rd all time Astros.  Just 6 away from JR.  And a few careers away from Ryan.

3-0 Astros after 5.

Roy with a sac bunt. Towles to 2nd.  2 Out.
Kepp drops an RBI single in shallow right center.  Towles scores from second.
Michaels drives one to CF for the 3rd out.

4-0 Astros, Mid 7

Really nice to see the Cubs look like shit in front of the home fans. Those cocksuckers deserve nothing less than to have their hopes ripped apart for a century or so.

My satellite is out all weekend because I'm getting a new roof and they had to move the dish. So I'm missing all Astros games, the next episode of The Pacific, and the season finale of Spartacus.

So Fuck the Cubs.

Just had my roof done.  The installer told me that 90% of the time they just drop the dish right back in the original holes and no realignment is needed.  If they're not working on that area of your roof right now, just ask them to put it back in.  It will probably work.

If he would've just taken charge and called it early instead of peeking twice to see where Keppinger was, that would've been an easy catch.

Byrd lines one to Pence.  1 Out
Soriano shallow pop up to Kepp.  Terrible desperation swing.  2 Out
Fontanot reaches on a bad hop fielding error by Feliz.
Soto drops a shallow pop between Kepp and Pence.  Ugly.  Pence should have called off Kepp and made that play.
LHB Colvin in to PH. DEEP fly to CF.  3 Out

4-0 Astros, end of 7.

101 pitches for Roy

They put the dish back in the same spot but it's not finding the satellite. I used to be able to aim them pretty well myself when they weren't so complicated, but I don't trust myself anymore. Figure I better let a pro do it.

Sullivan takes over CF.  Michaels takes LF and Lee has a seat.  Lyon in to pitch

Theriot grounds to Feliz right over the bag.  1 Out.
Fukudome lines a meatball to CF for a single.  Not sure what Lyon was trying to do there.
Lee belts a double to the left center gap.  Runners on 2nd and 3rd.
Ramirez with a line drive down the lf line scores two.  Lyon not fooling anyone.
Byrd Ks swinging at a low slider.  2 Out
Soriano doubles to LF.  Ramirez scores.
Thats it for Lyon.

4-3 Astros.  2 Out in the bottom of the 8th.

Johnson Ks swinging.  1 Out
Manzella fares no better.  Another swinging K.  2 Out
Towles works the count full before a swinging K himself.  Nice day for Rodeo Clown, regardless

4-3 Astros.  Going into the bottom of the 9th

Lindstrom in for his first save attempt of the year

Soto Ks with a check swing on what would have been ball four.  1 Out
Nady in to PH.  Grounds out to 3rd.  2 Out
Theriot grounds to Manzella, who lets the ball roll up his arm.  No play at first.  E6.
Fukudome at bat.  Towles lets an 0-2 slider get by him.  Theriot to second.
Fukudome Ks swinging

Astros Win!  4-3

Went to the game for my birthday.  I'll not likely repeat the experience of an April game again.  Fucking cold as shit.  For a brief moment, I was jealous of the douche in front of me with the Cubs snuggie.

Towles was on the postgame and they referred to that pitch as a changeup, FYI. Looks particularly nasty, with good speed that backs over the outside corner and dips hard at the end. Filthy.

In case you missed it, on Astros Live Steve Sparks gave a very informative explanation of the grip and arm velocity.

Went to the game for my birthday.  I'll not likely repeat the experience of an April game again.  Fucking cold as shit.  For a brief moment, I was jealous of the douche in front of me with the Cubs snuggie.

Were you with a group of five or so? If you were, you might've been on the teevee.

No - just me and the husband and we were up in the 500s.  Actually not a bad spot - we were just to the first base side of home plate (near the press boxes) and had a great view.  It's far less crowded up there than the lower areas and, in my experience, the only spot in the ballpark where you can get the italian sausage / beef combo.

The coldest game I've ever attended was a game at Wrigley 30 years ago (almost to the day, in fact). The day before had been one of those fooler days: warm, sunny, fans in the bleacher without shirts, etc. And the next day started the same. We headed up Michigan Ave and went to Gino's East for lunch, then started walking up Michigan and everything was wonderful. Then we turned west on some cross-street to catch the El, just as some humongous cold front was blowing in. By the time we got to Wrigley we were all freezing, and we had exactly one coat between the six of us. The crowd was small (against the Expos, I remember that Jeff Reardon closed it out), so they wouldn't let anybody into the upper stands, so everybody was in the shadows in the lower stands. Two of us went down to the souvenir store to get sweatshirts or something, but they were completely sold out; the only things left were satin pitchers' jackets for something like $125 (in 1980 dollars). We blew that off and tried to make it up by eating and swapping the coat (everybody got the coat for a half inning). The Andy Frains finally relented and started letting people into the upper stands, so we went upstairs and watched the last couple of innings from the upper deck in right field where there was a sliver of sun. Man, what a brutal day that was.

And??
In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

And??

He took a ball and showed the circle change grip (iirc, he held it kinda like this), then explained that Roy keeps the same arm velocity going forward to make it look just like his fastball. However, the key difference is in not snapping the wrist after releasing the ball but keeping the hand straight, thereby kinda pushing it out of the hand, resulting in Roy's changeup diving at the plate. Lee's K swinging at the end of this video is a good example of it.

He also pointed out how Roy used his changeup to strike out Fukudome (the swinging K in the video right before Lee's K) in the sixth. Leading off the bottom half of the inning, Fukudome had a 3-2 count and was sitting on the fastball. Roy fooled him with the changeup, which Fukudome was way out in front of and barely fouled off. Next pitch---boom, blew him away with the fastball.

Not to mention less likely to have a piece of the ballpark fall on you.

To this day I remember Bernitz facing Roy in Roy's debut season.  It may have even been Roy's 1st start - but I'm not sure about that.  Anyway, the bases are juiced, 0 out and Roy has just gone 3-0 on Bernitz.  Everyone knows a fastball is coming.  Everyone.  Here comes the pitch, and it's right down the pipe.  Jeromy unleashes on it...and gets nothing but air.  Roy pulled the string and Bernitz pretty much broke his back trying to hit it.

Bernitz was too traumatised to swing at the next pitch: a fastball down the middle and (IIRC) whiffed on a curve.  Pitcher's friend cleaned up the mess, and Roy was off to the races for his career.
