Somebody put this anthem singer out of his misery.  Carl Lewis called up and said he sucked.

MB leads off with a grounder behind 2b, Ryan tries the 360 throw but can't beat Bourn.

Hunter's 9-26 versus Wainwright career. That must explain his batting third.

"Skip" leads off with a soft single in front of Pence.
Ludwick smacks the next pitch into LF, 1st and 2nd.
Pujols lines 0-2 pitch to LF, Schumaker scores, Ludwick caught in rundown, Pujols advances to 2b.

1 out, 1 on:
Holliday bounces to SS, nice backhand by Manzella for the out, runner holds
Molina pops to Lee, inning over.

1 run, 3 hits, 1 LOB.

End 1, Jakes 1-0.

The leadoff hit was pretty soft, and he made a mistake to Pujols that fortunately did not end up in the seats.  Let's not panic yet.

Blum flies to CF
Feliz singles through the left side, shouldda hit third.
Kaz grounds one just foul under Pujols' glove; lines to deep CF, caught by Rasums, who shows a nice fluid stride chasing it down.
Q works a walk to roll over the lineup
(PS... the umpire appears to be very generous with the curve on the right-hand batter's side of the plate)
(PPS... just the sixth walk of the season for the Astros)
Wandy K looking (see PS)

Rasmus reaches on E3... Blum distracted by a portion of the bat barrell
Astros turn a pretty 6-4-3... that ball was not in Manzella's glove long
Ryan bouncer down 3b line, nice play by Feliz, inning over

Bourn singles to CF.
Bourn picked off... slow mo shows he just barely beat the tag, but ump could not have seen it.
Manzella easy 6-3.
Pence rolls over 5-3, inning over.

Wainwright flies softly to LF
JD breaking out the "Eny Cabreja" filler material a little too soon
Schumaker grounds up the middle, just out of Kaz's reach
Ludwick with a sharp single to LF
Fox puts the hex on Wandy with the "worst batting avg. vs. opposing pitchers" graphic for Pooholes; instant HR to LF bullpen by Pooholes.

Fuck you, FOX.

4-0 Jakes.

Why the switch?  Because we have no business talking shit about any other team.

Lee flies softly to RF, continuing his "you can't trade me if I'm washed up" tour.
Blum lines over the leaping SS, trips over 1b.
Feliz rolls over 5-4-3.

That was less "pitching to contact" and more "putting a curveball in the middle of the plate to the best hitter in the game".

Around the majors:

Phillies went down by 4, promptly dropped 7 on the gNats.  7-4 thru 5.  The Phillies are the best team in the league, and it's not close.
Cubs dropping a 9-5 soup bone on the Brewers.  Doug Davis couldn't even make our rotation.
Twins leading their home debut 3-0 against BoSox.

Kaz bounces high to Wainrwight, 1-3.
Q bounces to 2b, holds it long enough to make Q look like he's actually coming close on the ply.
Wandy singles to LF
Lucas claims that lack of timely hitting is the problem.  MM claims that lack of ANY hitting is the problem.
Bourn goes fishing on a wormburner, strikes out to end inning.

JD making fun of hockey
Ludwick lines a single to LF, basically what he's done every time
Pooholes took a fucking curtain call after his HR, as shown on the "Coors Blast" or whatever the fuck its called.  You just homered off the worst team in baseball.  Big fucking deal!!
Wandy gives Pujols nothing to swing at, loads the bases.

MLB At-Bat on my iPhone is giving pitch speeds to a decimal place.  Because that really makes a difference.

For example, the pitch that Freese just whacked was 91.7mph, whereas none of the earlier fastballs got about 90.9mph.

Rasmus wallks
Rasmus thrown out stealing on a phantom tag, but the throw beat him by a good second.  Apparently a missed hit and run.
Freese ground-rule double down RF line
Lopez strikes out Ryan to close the inning.

So St Louis is playing their 7th game, and Pujols has 14 RBI. Will any Astro have 14 RBI before May?

Hey Limey,

I have a British question.  Recently I was listening to the Gang of Four song "Ether," and at the end the guitar player repeatedly goes "There may be oil under Rockall."  So I've heard this song several thousand times, but for the first time it actually occured to me to look up what "Rockall" is?  According to the internet, it's some super tiny rock/island somewhere in the middle of the ocean between Ireland and Iceland, which the internet hints has some kind of symbolic or nationalistic significance to British people.

So, Limey, my question to you is:  "What's the deal with Rockall?"

No.  Not a chance.

If anyone can screengrab the Fox assholes showing the "worst batting averages against pitcher" graphic prior to the Pujols HR, I'd appreciate it.

Rockall is also the name of a ocean "zone" (don't know any better way to describe it) which makes schoolboys chuckle when mentioned on the BBC's shipping weather forecast - which used to be given at the top of the hour during Radio 4's test match commentary.  I believe it was the battleground for the Anglo-Bjorkian cod wars of the 1970s when both countries argued over who's fish it was in that part of the sea.

Wainwright hammers a double down the LF line.

What is the opposing pitcher's OBP so far this season? Quite sure its better than the Astros overall average.

A quick check proved this to be true. Wainwright's double probably puts it out of reach for the season. LaGenius would bat the opposing pitcher lead off in this lineup.

Schumaker bunts hard to pitcher, Byrdak gets Wainwright at 3b.
Mills out, Byrdak out, Sampson in, Towles in the 9 hole on the double switch.
Somebody tell Mills to stop sucking up to LaRussa.

Why would they draw walks?  What pitcher would be afraid to groove the ball to them?

Ludwick tirples to CF, Bourn runs into wall full speed, initially appears hurt, may just be shaken up

Sampson gets Pujols to bounce out to SS, and could not have lollygagged to first any slower.  If the runner had broken for home, they could have turned two.
JD says the Astros need them to hand them a game.

at least the first one wasn't a shut out.  i don't see how manzella is going to score with pence and lee hitting behind him.

The Cardinals also got Jason Marquis and Ray King in the deal. (Gave up Eli Marerro in addition to Drew.) Easily the best trade of Jocketty's tenure, in my opinion.

Rasmus 4-3
Freese solid single
Ryan FC 5-4, then a clusterfuck as Kaz throws the ball past Blum, Towles scrambles after it and makes a sidearm throw to 2b that doesn't come close, Ryan safe at 2b.
Stavinhoa PH for Wainwright, strikes out.

Yes and King was a big contributor to the bullpen, probably one of the best lefty relievers at the time. Wainwright was still a couple of years away.

He was.  He was the Braves' 1st round draft pick just a few years earlier.

no doubt, after he mentioned marquis being part of the trade, that was the player i remembered from the deal.

why can't the astros trade all-star player pence for a starting pitcher, a reliever and a stud prospect.  i'll also throw in almost any other player.

Only having to pitch eight innings on the road should save a little wear and tear on the bullpen this year.

Oswalt wouldn't bring much more than a few mediocre prospects, let alone a ML starter and a young stud.

I read in the paper this morning that he left the clubhouse without talking to reporters after yesterday's game, and my immediate thought was that he's thinking he's only got a couple of years left and this isn't the way he wants to spend them. Looking at this team, I don't think he'd veto any reasonable trade.

Motte in, Pence leads off
Pence takes a pitch the OPPOSITE FUCKING WAY for a single.  See what happens when you have an actual plate approach, Hunter??
Lee grounds 5-4-3, officially takes the lead as "doing the most to damage this team".  At least he ran hard for about half the line.
Blum flies to LF.

Final score: Cardinals 5, Astros 0

I don't think the team is quite to this point yet, but a horrible record/high pick in the hands of Bobby Heck would speed along the franchise's recovery.

That's your problem. Right there. You made the error of watching an ESPN production about baseball at all. ESPN.com SportsNation's latest poll was when would the Astros win their first game. I saw the 1988 Baltimore Orioles, which lost its first 21 in a row. I was in the opening day crowd as the Birds dropped their first game 10-0, with Teddy Higuera dropping a goose egg on them in their old Memorial Stadium.

Without Berkman, we're as bad as that club in my opinion. The '88 Birds ran off Cal Ripken, Sr. as skipper after the first six losses, but the new manager, Frank Robinson, didn't fare any better.

68K in 56 IP, 2.88 ERA, .221 batting average against.  I haven't seen him yet this year, but all I've read says he'll be a no-brainer #1 next year.

I don't typically watch ESPN baseball productions as such, but I was trying to catch the scores of the two late games that were tied and in extra innings. Normally when I see ESPN mock a team, I smirk and think, "Thank God that ain't my team/thank God I ain't a fan of that team"/something along those lines. Last night my head was in my hands because my smirk-less thought was, "Oh, Lord, they're talkin' about my team..."

There are a number of names already being tossed around for next year's top few picks. Jungmann in one of them, along with Anthony Rendon (Rice), Sonny Gray (Vanderbit), and Gerrit Cole (UCLA). In addition, Matt Purke (TCU, Rangers' unsigned first-rounder in '09) will be a draft-eligible sophomore. There are a few more, but those are some off the top of my head.

It'll be a good year to pick high. Just don't ask how many of these guys are represented by Scott Boras.
