In Kemah, Astros style.  LINK
In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

my sister, brother and i tried to go volunteer on that sunday...but they were all booked with volunteers.
we thought a 9p-3a shift on a 35 (or so) degree night might be slim on volunteers. i had no problem being
turned away, and my sister ended up going the next day.

i can't think of a more deserving family to get chosen for the honor.

Great, great story.  Good foster parents are a great asset to the communities they serve.  Speaking of, if anyone here is curious or has an interest bubbling below the surface and could be nudged towards serving their neighbors in this regard, I'd be happy to share my thoughts and experience.  My wife and I have been foster parents for over 11 years.  Feel free to PM me.
Another trenchant comment by a jealous lesser intellect.

If you need an additional endorsement, it is the field I work in and have for 20 years.  Foster Care isn't for everyone but everyone can do something for kids in foster care.

We're helping a family at our church setup for their dive into being Foster parents.  In fact, six families have stepped up to do this.  Our family is close to several of them, but the one we're personally helping, we've given them furniture (kids furniture) and such because it is such a need in Austin.

Ditto, except I've been in the field 5 years less. I'm currently second-in-command at a private foster agency just north of Dallas. Foster kids and parents always need support. Anyone interested in helping out foster parents or kids, or even becoming a foster parent (if you're in the DFW area), PM me.

ETA: Oh. My. God. Serious blast from the past. I know the family in Kemah. They used to live far northwest of Houston, and I was the caseworker for two little girls placed in their home for several months. I'd heard they'd moved somewhere southeast but didn't know where. I lost touch with them when they switched to a different foster agency and I switched to a different job at CPS. They were some of the most wonderful, and energetic, foster parents I've ever worked with. I am so glad to see they are still involved with helping children, and I'm so glad to see they got recognized. Wow.

This episode is supposed to air tonight.

A sad addendum... one of the children died a few weeks ago, just before her 2nd birthday, due to medical problems. I tried to find the Chronicle article but all I could come up with was the obit.
