Is this true?
« on: December 03, 2009, 01:17:18 pm »
I understand that you can't believe everything on the Interwebs.

And I've stayed a country mile clear of this "Twilight" crap.

But seriously... is even 10% of this summary true?

Because if so, I seriously weep for our future.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

I didn't read the link but is there naked girls in the movie?
Everyone's talking, few of them know
The rest are pretending, they put on a show
And if there's a message I guess this is it

Really?  I totally would have gone the other way with that.

It's just so spectacularly batshit insane, how can it not brighten your day?

Nice.  Also interesting are Depp as Pancho Villa and Duvall as Quixote.  Didn't know that.

Seems the right time to post this: STFU Twi-hards

The Idiocracy creep continues unabated.  Gizzmonic, you want to get working on some speculative fiction of a future where Twilight becomes its own religion?

"Becomes?"  It might be there already.  Either that, or it will become fodder for future movies set in this time period.  All the douchebags will wear Ed Hardy tattoo shirts and read Twilight. I tend to think that anything that gets people reading is a good thing, but after reading that summary, I'm not so sure. PS I've never read Twilight or Harry Potter.

my 13 year-old cousin enthusiastically explained the whole plot of this book to me last summer and it seemed to make perfect sense to her.  of course she's 13 and a girl

Seriously, I've written stories about time-traveling bloggers that make more sense that that description.  Yet somehow the kiddies eat it up...what am I doing wrong?

Kudos to MM for finding this dreck.

I was speaking to a class of 6th graders earlier this week, at a high-end private religious school, and I don't know what made me do it, but just prior to launching into my prepared talk, I said, "Before we start, I have one question for you.  What is the deal with vampires?"

The room exploded into conversation, and yelling.  It was amazing, I had no idea.  There was so much commotion, the assistant headmaster had to get up on the stage and shout the students down.  I never did get a clear answer to my question, just some pre-pubescent girls screaming that so-and-so (one of the actors, I presume) is "so hot!!"

I never got the whole Anne Rice thing, either.  To me, vampires are one of the stupidest and most unappealing fictional constructs out there, maybe in history.  Shows what I know.

Living dead walking around at night needing blood to stay alive-- sounds like a pretty perfect concept for horror, touching on lots of diverse psychological sub-issues like most good horror does.  but this relatively recent concept of vampire chic/glam/emo is the one that i don't totally get, and it's interesting how far the vampire character archetype has moved away from some of its earlier rat-like manifestations.

I have read the Bram Stoker book several times and thoroughly enjoyed it every time. The rest of vampire literature does nothing for me.

I too think the vampire thing is silly, but there's a great great book called The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova that came out a few years ago that I HIGHLY recommend, even though there's a vampire.

And remember folks: when 30-40 year old women line up outside a movie premier to gawk and throw underwears at the underage male star, it's just a harmless obsession.  If the roles were reversed, you'd be a sex offender or a potential presidential assassin.
