Question: If Ryan loses out in the bidding, does he stay on as President? I hope not. And simply for the reason that if Ryan is not in the Rangers hierarchy, the odds of losing RR to the Rangers is lower, in theory anyway.

Ryan was reported by the Dallas News to be a part of two possible bidding groups. IIRC Gilbert's group was one of them. I will be surprised if Ryan isn't still in his President role next year.

Precisely. He is a major asset and brings credibility to the organization. Additionally, I think he will end up with a piece-of-the ownership pie.

This statement from the article seems to contradict that...

Being excluded from an ownership group doesn't exclude him from keeping his job as Club President. But "supposably" his move to DFW was to be part of an ownership group, which was something Drayton wasn't going to offer.

Nolan Ryan has a business decision to make with the RR team. If it's in his best financial interest to change affiliations, he will, if it's not, he wont.

Here's the latest from reliable writer Evan Grant of the DMN. Tom Hicks has tried to raise cash to retain the team by getting an upfront cash infusion from FOX Sports for a contract extension but MLB nixed the deal due to concerns about cash flow down the road from TV revenue. In other words, MLB does not approve of such a large part of the extension being paid up front. Gilbert's bid is the leading one at this time over the Chuck Greenburg bid (this is the one that Ryan is parterned with). A third bid by Houstonian Jim Crane has never gotten much traction and, this is where it gets interesting, part of the problem with Crane is that MLB has a bad taste in it's mouth from Crane backing out of a verbal deal to buy the Houston Astros and would not approve him. Does anybody here no when that occured? Meanwhile, Hicks is trying to put together a deal with Gilbert where he would retain some ownership of the club.

Today is the deadline imposed by MLB on Hicks to make a decision on the sale of the Rangers. Another twist in the tale according to today's Dallas Morning News. Houston businessman Jim Crane who was considered out of the picture a week or so ago as emerged as the possible frontrunner after submitting a new bid that is the highest on the table. The article does not say if Ryan would be involved with Crane but there was a report a couple of days ago that Crane was going to re-submit and had reached out to Ryan.
Once again, there is this in the final paragraph. " Crane's odds might not be much better if he were to reach the final phase in the process, getting 75% of baseball's owners to approve the sale.He once reneged on an agreement to buy the Houston Astros and that still doesn't sit well with many MLB executives and owners."

Crane's candicacy appeared to be in doubt because of a handshake agreement to buy the Astros in the fall of 2008 that fell apart in the final hour, and that seemed to cast doubt among Major League officials if he would ultimately gain approval to buy the Rangers. But that could be a moot point if he is deemed the highest bidder in this situation.

The fact that we're just now hearing about this is pretty amazing. I know it's the Chronicle, but you'd think SOMEONE on that staff would have heard something about it and jumped all over it. I almost have to believe the 'Stros asked them not to write about it, and they--for whatever reason--agreed. That, or the Astros are better at keeping things close to the vest than almost every other organization/business/governing body I've ever encountered.

It's hard to believe this went a full year without becoming a story. If you search, though, you can see references to it almost a month ago, but always as an aside as if it was common knowledge.

Someone asked Justice about this. Here was his response:

Ringolsby (Rocky Mountain News) mentioned it offhandedly at the beginning of October.

Word is two other teams are available — the Houston Astros and Arizona Diamondbacks — although there is no indication that there have been any serious talks with a prospective buyer for either team.

My Fox Houston shot down the rumor shortly thereafter (I thought Footer did as well, but cant find the reference): LINK

When reached by FOX 26 McLane, without hesitation, said the information about the Astros is inaccurate.

"Nothing could be further from the truth," McLane said. "Our goal is to get the best manager in baseball and move aggressively forward to be a champion in 2010."

I don't think I'd underestimate Crane in any business-type negotiations. Maybe MLB is wary of him, if they are, because they're afraid he'll pull a quick one on them, or Hicks, or Drayton, or whomever.

Despite news reports to the contrary, Drayton says there is no hard feelings between he and Crane, that the deal soured because of the recession? Really? Crane has tried to buy the Cubs and the Rangers during this recession. You would think that the team he would really covet would be the one in his hometown. Now that the Ranger deal is seemingly settled, if he doesn't approach McLane again I would venture there are hard feelings.

I was an occasional coffee boy for some of my teachers, so I got to see it up close and personal. Worn-out couches with outdated floral prints, held together by decades of sweat, a grimy coffee machine, staticky radio droning 740 AM, and (no kidding) orange shag carpeting that was at least 20 years old. Now that's the kind of place a gentleman would enjoying exploring his feelings with a classy lady!
