Austin Question
« on: November 06, 2009, 11:14:17 am »
Mrs Pete and I will be in Austin for a concert Nov 21.  The show is at Texas Union Theatre, and we're staying at the Radisson on Cesar Chavez overnight.  My question is regarding the Texas Union Theatre:  it doesn't look like there's any parking in the area, and it doesn't look walkable from the hotel--is there parking that I'm missing?  Would a taxi be more advisable?

Thank you all.

There are paid parking lots across the drag.  Cost you $10.

You could also try to park in some of the faculty/staff spaces on 24th St. that become free parking on the weekends.  Those would probably go pretty quick, though.

There are also parking garages all across campus.  Find one that suits you.

Sure, go ahead and walk it.  It's only like 3 miles each way.  It will be good for you.  But seriously, you used to be able to park on the campus streets on the evenings and weekends.  I haven't been down to campus in awhile so I don't know if this is still true.  There might be a parking map on ut's web site that tells you where you can park and when.

First of all, for any surface parking I'd recommend arriving well in advance, maybe even an hour before, to give yourself time to find a parking space and walk.  Avoid any "A AT ALL TIMES" or "F AT ALL TIMES" signs.

The Union ("UNB") is in B3 on the map.  The street directly north of it is 24th.  There is faculty/staff parking on 24th between Guadalupe and San Jacinto, most of which becomes public parking after hours and on weekends.  (At least, it used to be.)  Dean Keeton, two more blocks north, is another option.  There is also some parking on Inner Campus Drive, but I think most of those spaces are of the "at all times" variety.

If all else fails, you could park in one of the four UT garages that are open on Saturdays or the Dobie Mall garage at 21st and Whitis.  Dobie is probably closest but I don't know how late that garage is open.  The conference center is next closest but is the most expensive.  After that it's a wash between the Brazos and San Jacinto garages, although the walk from SJG to the Union is ALL uphill.

When I go to shows at Catus Cafe (same building) I've had good luck with the public lot on the SW corner of Guadalupe and W 25th St. It's like $6.00 and a very short walk. Sometimes, before choosing to pay to park, I drive around the area of the Texas Union building and find a free spot.

And if there's a message I guess this is it

Well, we ended up walking it, it wasn't bad at all.  Stopped by some pub on 6th street for beer and lunch, then headed up to the show.  It was a great great show--I would definately advise anyone who has a chance to go see Guy Clark.  Even got to meet the Man Himself afterward.  Nice venue too.
We did take a taxi back when it as over.
For some reason the campus was really crowded on Saturday night, like there was a game on or something...
