SI with a nice piece on Ausmus: LINK

(Some good quotes throughout, including: Ausmus did once tie a single-season National League batting record, as an Astro in 2002, when he equaled Ernie Lombardi's 64-year-old mark by grounding into 30 double plays. "I had two weeks to break it, and didn't hit into another one," Ausmus says. "I blame the people in front of me for not getting on base.")

In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

Colletti and Torre so eagerly sought Ausmus not only to be a serviceable backup but to tutor Martin; to work with the pitching staff, before every series and every game; and to deploy his veteran wiles to help stabilize a clubhouse that is rather young, on the whole, and features a certain be-dreadlocked fellow with a reputation for creating discord.

Torre is certain that Ausmus was integral to his team's success, and he has influenced and connected with his teammates in a deep way in which a coach simply cannot. "Even I didn't realize the impact he can have until I saw it firsthand," says Torre, a former catcher who selected Ausmus to his only All-Star team, in 1999, when Torre was the Yankees' manager and Ausmus a Tiger.

Compare and contrast this statement to how things went in the Astros clubhouse this year...

In Ball Four, Jim Bouton talks about a player with these same attributes, and describes him as "the kind of guy who's good for a club, even if he's not playing well".  Sadly, the importance of these guys is lost on many.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

He is the reason I have decided to root for the Dodgers this post season.

Hope you're not too disappointed then, because that was one enjoyable finish tonight, both games for that matter.

Just some great swings and contact in these two series. Those two shots in the Philly first last night--Howard's and Werth's--the beauty by Rollins to end it tonight, the bopper in Anaheim by Mathis in the 11th earlier this evening? Shoot, Kemp's HOUR looked like it was a fly to center, but it just kept going.

Hell of a final four baseball came up with this year. Even Koufax showed up for it.

side note ..a "separated from birth nomination" the lead dude in the show Flashforward or whatever they call it is a lighter haired version of Ausmus....Budgirl?
Remember Jesus Alou being called out of the 1st base coaching box to pinch-hit a double vs. the Reds in '79 I think, to win a crucial game, and he patted Morgan on top of the head (ala Benny Hill w/the little bald guy) and Little Joe got pissed.....yeah,that was great.

Has anyone else been watching that show?  I think we're about to give up on it;  if it's dragging ass already, I can't imagine how lame it will be by April.   I figure it has 2 or 3 more weeks, then I'm bailing.

Agreed.  The part that bugs me the most is that the story is actually pretty decent, but the dialogue and acting are about as clunky as they come.
