He's been great since he came off of the DL, but we need to spend money on starting pitching and maybe 3B/SS.

Since he has declared his intentions there won't be any risk in offering him arbitration. This sounds like a couple of draft picks headed our way on this one.

Let's hope so. I love Valverde but agree with Mr. Happy, a top-flight, top-$ closer like that is a luxury to a team in the Astros' situation right now.

Especially since so many teams have shown that the difference between a serviceable closer and a good middle reliever is the right mindset.

...and a closer ain't much good to you if you're losing by the 9th more often than not.

Remind me why we didn't deal him at the deadline?

Because we were "contenders".
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

Because the team went on an ill-timed winning streak and got themselves close to contention, before imploding shortly thereafter.

2004 and 2005 are getting smaller and smaller in the rear view mirror, but they still loom large in the minds of the Astros' management.

Agreed.  Even though she's not a million miles away from being one of the characters in the "Black Hole Sun" vid.

And the homophobes out there who didn't see "Brokeback Mountain" missed out on something quite nice.  See also Williams, Michelle.

Damn straight. I saw it four times - keep the ticket stubs in my wallet in case I get stopped and asked if I hate homosexuals. Not to mention the fact that my cousin from San Angelo went to Julliard with Van Cliburn.

To be [32 years old], or not to be [32 years old], that is the question. MLB Trade Rumors Link

Lisa Gray and I stumbled across an age discrepancy with Astros closer Jose Valverde yesterday.  Some sources had his birth date as July 24th, 1979, while others had it as March 24th, 1978.  The Astros confirmed to me that the latter date is correct; Valverde will be 32 when the 2010 season begins.

I know, I know, Lisa Gray... but... it has led to some tweeting from McTaggart and Footer (although I'm evidently too dense to understand exactly what Ed Wade is actually saying about the issue).

McTaggart: Astros GM Ed Wade says Valverde age discrepancy a mistake.

McTaggart: Ed Wade: "Adding that extra year to his age at this point of time is of no great consequence.”

Footer: @brianmctaggart so if I'm to understand this correctly, Valverde outed himself for having a false birth date on his own web site?

I know, I know, Lisa Gray...

From her intellectual cesspool of a "blog":

I was especially hoping to see Bogusevic, Locke, Klemens and even Abercrombie, but it is too important to get to .500 so that we pick lower in the draft and have to lose picks if we sign a Type A.

Before I get tarred and feathered, 'twas only quoting Dierkes here, not Gray... and... wouldn't have even gone there this time (given the original source) but for the McTaggart and Footer tweets.  Just sayin...

Lisa Gray...

Had to stop right there. Hope it wasn't anything important.
