District 9 ...did anyone see it? (SPOILERS)
« on: August 17, 2009, 12:21:48 pm »
Hey, did anyone go to see District 9 this weekend?  I did, and I thought it was pretty good.  It does a decent job of presenting themes of oppression, alienation, group identity etc.  Of course it's no accident that the movie's set in South Africa.  I think it's worth seeing if you like thoughtful sci-fi...and of course there's a good bit of action to keep you interested as well.

I thought it was great. It was a different approach from the usual alien storyline, with lots of action and interesting moral choices too. It was much better than the typical summer popcorn movie.

Haven't seen it yet because I was in the studio all weekend.  At one point once the rhythm section had locked down our parts we were seriously considering leaving and seeing District 9 while the guitars finished their work.  Looks amazing though, hopefully this week.

The weapons in District 9 are described as being pants-shittingly awesome which brings tears of joy and excitement to my eyes.

Wait!  They put "time traveler" in the title, but they make it a CHICK FLICK?!?  That's nefarious!

BTW, I also saw "500 Days of Summer" this weekend.  It was okay, although the main character is a total schlub.  He does an awesome dance number to some Hall & Oates, true story.  And Zooey Deschanel (sp?) is hot, as always.  Also, why is everyone in a romantic comedy either an architect, in love with an architect, or desiring to be an architect?

Its arty and glamorous, but you also have responsibility (which shows intelligence and stability) since buildings are expensive.  In general, these qualities seem to be attractive to others.  Also, you don't have to spend a lot time in the script describing what this person does.

Also, the architect deal in this particular film was in direct juxtaposition to his actual job, which was writing greeting cards.  One was something to aspire to, and the other was something he did because he given up (in just about every sense of the word).

Yeah, but should those Hollywood twits ever figure out how to manufacture "personality" we're in serious troubel...

Yeah, it's one of those jobs that screenwriters don't considering selling out to the man, unlike the contemptuous job of greeting-card writer!  Those fuckers wrecked our economy and our emotional life!
