Ausmus the third-best Jewish catcher of all time
« on: August 06, 2009, 03:57:18 pm »
Interviewed by JWeekly

“I wasn’t raised with the Jewish religion, so in that sense I don’t really have much feeling toward it,” he said. “However, in the last 10 or so years, I have had quite a few young Jewish boys who will tell me that I am their favorite player or they love watching me play or they feel like baseball is a good fit for them because it worked for me or it worked for Shawn Green or other Jewish players at the major league level."

“It has been a sense of pride. If you can have a positive impact on a kid, I’m all for it.”

I misread this as "Ausmus the third most Jewish catcher of all time."

We do have this pamphlet on famous Jewish sports legends.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

Third-best Jewish catcher?  Really.

Harry Danning (New York Giants, 1933-42) and Lieberthal were better?

I bet Ausmus has more triples than them.

Moe Berg?

BTW, I wonder if there is such thing as a young Jewish boy costume/disguise?

Ask Barbara Streisand.

Ask Barbara Streisand.

That wasn't a very convincing disguise, though.

So the Mets are sponsoring Jewish Heritage Night -- like a bunch of teams have done.  This year, the Mets are partnering with the "Gift of Life Foundation," an organization that sponsors bone marrow donation.  At the game this year, the Mets are going to do a testing drive as well as introduce (for the very first time) a recipient to his/her donor.  Gift of Life is a worthy foundation that unfortunately got a lot of bad press this past year because they added Bernard Madoff to their board days before Madoff was arrested.

I raise this because my wife also happens to be on the board of the foundation (she is a childhood friend of the founder Jay Feinberg).  So we are going to game and sitting in the Wilpon Suite.  I have never sat in a luxury box at a game (and certainly not in the owner's box).  So while I hate the Mets, I am actually excited to see this game (vs. the Giants).
Boom!

Luxury boxes really are not fun ways to take in a game.  I dread them.  The High Life commercial is actually pretty accurate.  No one up there is watching the game, and you kind of are forced to be a misanthrope if you want to intently watch.  It's a fine time if you want to get drunk and bs though.  Just try and avoid getting drunk and trying to bs about baseball because no one will have a fucking clue.  Never sat in the owner's box before though, perhaps the baseball acumen will be higher in such an environment.

Third-best Jewish catcher of all time sounds like it's a step above being formerly New Zealand's fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo.

I'm wondering who's fourth-best.
