10 years ago today
« on: July 16, 2009, 04:25:23 am »
Lance Berkman made his major league debut (July 16, 1999 in the Astrodome against the Detroit Tigers).  Happy 10th Fat Elvis (and other stuff)
In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

I'm glad the debut AB "rally-killing double play", as he put it, didn't stop him.

I have no memory of any interleague play ever in the dome.  It seemed to begin with the new ballpark, but 1999 was the first year.

Thanks, OSF, lots of good stuff in there. The bit from the CBS guy was priceless:
"Prediction: Beats the crap out of me. I thought they’d win 66 games this year, tops, with that pitching staff. I have no credibility in all matters Astro."
"Come check us out in the Game Zone. We don’t bite. Unless you say something idiotic." -Mr. Happy

the offense for the ‘biggest problem’

Does McTaggart know anything about baseball? Does he even watch the games? Or is he busy writing on chuck's wall?

The biggest problem (so far) for the 09 Astros is inconsistent defense and an inconsistent bullpen. And Cooper.
Oye. Vamos, vamos.

I thought we'd answered this already. He's a step up from Fat Chuy (blank newsprint is a step up from that mouthbreather) but a couple flights down from Ms House.

Inconsistent starting pitching just may enter into it

Has any aspect of play been consistent?

Cooper has been consistent.

I remember seeing Bartolo Colon in the Dome. He struck me as a big ol fat Hideki-type slob. Until the radar gun flashed 99 on the screen. Then he seemed like a tub of goo with an arm. Yeah, that was interleague.

I remember Colon pitching also. If I recall correctly the next game Lance was in CF and he misplayed a ball that resulted in an inside the park home run. It may have been a grand slam, in fact.

That Astros County guy deserves some attention for his work following the Astros and the farm. His readership seems to be low, which is a shame. He's not an idiot like the fuckstains at AD or that horrid Lisa Gray person.

Puma's rankings among switch-hitters are astounding. First in slugging and OBP according to Brownie.

The first time I saw Colon I thought it was Manuel Noriega in a baseball outfit.

At the time they came up, I thought Daryl Ward was going to be the big star.  Thankfully, no one in power listened to/channeled me.
