So, I met Denny Walling yesterday...
« on: July 13, 2009, 10:55:33 am »
He's a roving instructor for the O's.  Last night was Faith Night at the (Frederick, MD) Keys stadium.  The Associate Pastor at my church is the team chaplain, played shortstop in A ball and MC'ed the pre-game activities.  A couple of the players and Walling gave their testimonies.  Just prior, I had been chatting with my pastor when he mentioned the speaking lineup.  When he mentioned "a coach named Denny Walling", to his surprise, I got all animated, blathering about "Good Wood Walling" and '86.  It was pretty funny and for good measure, embarassing to my wife.  My pastor dragged Walling over and introduced us.  He's a very nice guy, was slightly amused at the obvious excitement I showed and patiently withstood my fuzzy recollections and recounts of his exploits from 20 years ago.  He said no while nodding his head yes when I asked him if he "absolutely hated" the Mets (which was funny because he has coached for them) and chuckled when I said I forgave him for going to play with the Cardinals in '88 and vigorously defended himslef with an emphatic "I was traded!!!".  Good times.

You'll need a longer countdown for him to finish typing.

I almost met Nolan Ryan when the Rangers were last in town.  Went to the game and on the way back to the parking lot saw a guy stop and sign a bat for somebody, right in front of whatever that hotel is by the stadium.  I was about 10 feet behind him and could've stopped him and asked for an autograph, but kind of felt like the guy should be able to walk from the stadium to the hotel without people bothering him.  Plus he looked to be in a hurry, so maybe he had to change for a later engagement or make a phone call or take a shit or something.  So I didn't bother him, but that was a brush with greatness for me.  Shorter than I though he'd be.

I met Ryan at the Texas Capitol sometime in the late 80s and I thought he was taller and thinner than I expected him to be. They run celebrities in and out of there constantly, or at least they did when I worked there - I met bunches of them, from Justin Wilson and A. J. Foyt to George Foreman and ZZ Top, as well as many, many political figures but by far the largest, craziest crowds were for Kevin Costner and Nolan Ryan. I can see why Nolan would be walking fast, he continually had a crowd of 50+ people jammed right up against him in some kind of movable knot, with a good 300+ ringed around that knot trying to get to him. Standing in the center of that kind of attention is a bizarre feeling, electric and hot and weird.

A number of years ago Nolan Ryan attended the same church as my ex and our daughters. (I went to events and functions but can’t claim it as “my” church.) My parents came for my youngest daughter’s confirmation and Nolan came in late and sat down next to my father…..My father is almost as big a fan of Nolan Ryan as he is John Wayne. I didn’t point out who was sitting next to him partly because I wanted to see his reaction when he looked to his left, and partly because I was afraid he would make a scene in the church. He never noticed. I told him later and I think that may be the most disappointed he has ever been in his oldest son.

A few years later the same daughter had a job at the church working with 2 & 3 year-olds during Sunday School. When she moved Nolan took that job. I’m sure he has given that up now, since he has a different gig in a different city. But, she can still claim to be one of the few people ever relieved by Nolan Ryan.

My daughter is totally unimpressed by these events. She has no real appreciation for Nolan Ryan. Luke Scott was her first love. She now calls Lance Berkman “My Boy”. Carlos Lee is her “Big Boy”. Hunter Pence is her “Awkward Boy”…..

Obviously, God has worked a miracle here, because those are the things Walling was not my one and only time meeting him.  There could not have been a ruder player on the planet to me.  But as I said, God works in mysterious ways and this is a message to me: Juneberno!

When I was a kid, I used to make my dad wait with me at the exit where the Astros came out of the locker-room so we could get autographs.  One day I went up to Denny Walling and handed him a softball to sign.  (It was all I had).  He made a couple of jokes about how he wished the ball he got to hit was so big.  So I thought he was nice.  In fact, most of the Astros from my childhood were pretty nice and accomodating to kids -- in particular Jose Cruz, Jesus Alou, Bob Watson, Terry Puhl, Enos Cabell, and Nolan Ryan were supernice to me.  I had just read a biography of Ryan that I bought from Scholastic Books, and Ryan answered every question that I had about the book.  There were a couple who weren't.  Joe Morgan was about as unfriendly as you could get.  Don Sutton was not very nice.  JR Richard was just annoying.  A couple of times when I had a "team" item that I was trying to get the whole team to sign, Richard deliberately wrote his signature over Nolan Ryan's.  If he had done that once, I would have said it was an accident.  But he did it twice.  So I was pretty convinced from that that Richard didn't like Ryan.
Boom!

I grew up in Alvin and got to play on Nolan Ryan field in high school.  Ryan was in the stands for one of the best games I ever had.  It was something retarted like 15 k's in 7 innings.  I could do no wrong that night and after the game Nolan pat me on the back and told me i threw a hell of a game.

I also had a ton of Delia's napkins with his autograph but they were destroyed in one of the many floods since i left Alvin.

Turkey is an absolutely fantastic place.  The people are warm and engaging, the cities are modern and convenient and there is something for everyone from world class shopping, a historians paradise, to skiing in the mountains to excellent Mediterranean and European food all around.  You'll have a wonderful time if your personality is explorative at all.

We have family visiting from Turkey this week and next summer my family and I plan to be in Turkey for several weeks in summer.  I'm totally stoked about going there too.  Fantastic, beautiful, historic place to visit.  It is the European version of Cancun or Acapulco, but much more historic and beautiful from the pictures and stories I've been hearing from my family.

Been in the Air Force a little over ten years now.  looking forward to Turkey and yes I do plan on seeing as much as i can.  Biblical stuff to shotguns and carpets.  I cant wait.  I hear many good things about the Turkish Rivierra and skiing as well but have never skied, just some kneeboarding in Chocolate Bayou when i was growing up.  I dont think there's any surf in Turkey and that bums me out.

Be careful.  I think "kneeboarding in chocolate bayou" means something very different in Turkey.

I have a cousin who serves in the Air Force who spent a couple of years in Turkey. It was not his favorite place (he greatly preferred Germany) but then again he is probably not terribly explorative.

What I want to know, Hudson, is where the hell is Turkey? I mean, it's bi-continental, obviously. Not that I have a problem with that. But is it also Central Asian? Middle Eastern? It abuts both regions yet is a NATO member and is hoping to join the European Union. Puzzle that one out.

Turkey does not exist.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

This may help:

Duh, Turkey is in the Panhandle.

Or did you mean that other Turkey that's south of Odessa?

Oh, too bad. I'm pretty sure that particular turkey is in Chocolate Bayou by now.

The Chocolate Bayou in Turkey, not the one in Germany.

I have since remembered that I have yet another cousin who has also visited Turkey. He's in the erl bidniss. Specifically the company he works for cleans oilfield equipment. I didn't realize that Turkey did much in the way of oil production, but there you go. Anyway, he hated it. He said he couldn't find anything to eat and that the beer was terrible (and warm!) and that he had a hell of a time finding a Burger King or a McDonald's or whatever they might have in Instanbul. I guess he never figured out that they serve drinks in the women's prisons there.

Balancing that, I have just remembered that I have a sort-of ex-girlfriend who years ago visited the north coast of Turkey and loved it. She is obviously considerably more explorative than my kinfolk.

Also, weren't people recently talking about TMBG around here?

Bob Wills is from Turkey, so the music should be good.

I agree with das and Noe, its a cool place, but there are a lot of hustlers and some dangerous places.

Basically East Turkey is where the danger becomes real.  Oh, and from what I understand, if you *live* in Turkey (not visit, visitors and tourist bring money and that's very cool), you'll get some very heated and passionate conversation about their view of Americans.  Basically, it is such a distorted and jaundice view that if they spent any amount of time with you, they will tell you have surprised they are that what they thought about Americans is basically incorrect.  This basically happens anywhere in Turkey that is not East of Antioch.  Once you trek to Eastern Turkey, you better be very careful.

I'm interested in the old historic ancient civilizations found in Central and Western Turkey.  Where my family lives in near Bodrum, the most sinful, party city in Turkey.  I'll be avoiding that city even though I understand that you can live or visit outside of Bodrum and just go into the city when you need anything other than the drunken spring break-like college scene.

My girlfriend and I caught the free TMBG "family" show at Prospect Park this past weekend. Fun time, had been about 10 years since I saw them.

I was told you can go to the womens prison with 5 bucks

- Get drunk
- Screw
- get a cab home

and still have change in your pocket - of course i would never do that

Don't know about now but this was true many years ago. There was such an establishment in Izmir known as "The Compound". Turkish soldiers got a free visit once a month. Any time you saw a duece and a half full of soldiers with grins on their faces, you knew where they were headed.

Correct.  It is really the Greek province of Asia, temporarily under the illegal jurisdiction of some central asian nomads.

Yes, you should refer to it by it's real name, Anatolia.  Would probably go over big with the locals.

Get this. Cousin #1, dude in the USAF, first one to Turkey, right? I haven't heard from him in years. At the moment he's in Iraq (third tour, charming place, apparently, those sand storms sound like a hoot...). I remember speaking with him on the phone three or four years ago at Christmas as the phone was being passed around but I haven't seen him in at least five years, probably more and I haven't heard from him in probably about that as well.

Because of my ramblings I spent a good deal of time thinking about him yesterday. Not direct reminiscing, necessarily, but he was lurking around in my thoughts all day. Anyway, this morning I get an email from him, the first direct communication in I don't know how long. Years and years. Weird, huh?

The Chocolate Bayou in Turkey, not the one in Germany.

To learn more about the Chocolate Bayou, visit a Turkish prison...
