Corpus Christi recommendations?
« on: July 11, 2009, 09:44:36 am »
Me and the family are going to be rolling in to Corpus for a cub scout thing at the aquarium tonight. Anyone have recommendations for a place to eat nearby? Kid-friendly is a plus, but I'd settle for kid-not-a-pain-in-the-ass.

Also, is there a public beach near there with showers? We'll have an hour to kill in the morning, and it seems idiotic to be at the coast and not hit the beach at all. It doesn't need to be a good beach, just close and with the ability to rinse sand off. I ain't fussy.

Pier 99 is on North Beach near the Aquarium. You could walk there. Blackbeard's is there, too. they are both of the island motif. Burgers, seafood, and on the ocean. Informal and kid-friendly.

My favorite dining spot in CC is Mama Mia's downtown. Great Italian. It's nice but not too formal. Beware, it is not inexpensive and he only takes cash. No credit.

The bar/restaurant at the top of the Omni has a great panaramic view of the city. Pretty after dark and a good place for an after dinner drink. They have good food, not great, and are pricey as you would expect.
There are two Omni's downtown...I'm referring to the one closest to the aquarium.

Water Street is another good place downtown. Good seafood menu and informal. Very popular and I always thought a bit overrated. It is a step up from Landry's though. Reasonably priced.

I was just in CC and ate my one dinner at Mama Mia's but I wouldn't hesitate to eat at any of the above.
Pier 99 may be the place that most suits a family and you can sit outside if there is a table available and look at the Lex. Have fun!

I didn't answer your question regarding the beach. North Beach is right there downtown where the Lex is. It is not near as much fun as the island but it's a beach with sand and water. I can't swear but bet they have public showers. Alot of people use that beach.

Snoopy's is out towards the island but very good. A long way from downtown.

The kiddos were nuts, but it was a lot of fun. Our pack got to the aquarium right at closing time, then we did after hours tours and educational stuff all night. We all got to sleep in front of the big tank with the giant fish and two sharks, which was cool. Had to skip the beach, because my boys were (rightfully) more interested in touring the Lex before we had to split. Did breakfast at the City Diner while we waited for the ship to open -- it was tasty. Thanks for the info, Pier 99 was extremely convenient.

I think I'll haul the family back down next month to stay in a house for a weekend. Anyone have a strong opinion on which beach to aim for? Anything within an hour of Corpus is OK by me.

Port Aransas.

Yes, that would be my call for the midcoast if you want to do the beach thing.  Take the ferry and there are quite a few places to rent there.  Note: don't hang around too long in Aransas Pass.

Rockport is another option.  It caters a little more toward people going down to fish.  Better beaches are to be found doing the Port Aransas thing.

What is wrong with Aransas Pass.  Just curious, as I am going to start looking at real estate down there and would like to know more about the area/areas.

Maybe nothing now.  Used to be a rough place but I haven't been there in three or four years.

It hasn't gotten better in 3-4 years.

My family has a condo in Rockport. That is a very nice town but has no beaches. The ferry is 15-20 minutes away. The line to get on the ferry can be as long as 45 minutes on a busy Saturday. There are places to stay in Rockport or, of course, in Port A to be at the beach in minutes. Port A is my recommendation for a beach within one hour of CC. If you stay in CC then Port A is about 45 minutes away. You can be at Padre Island in less time from CC.

We took our son to Rockport last Thursday and had a nice time at the Rockport Beach Park.  It wasn't as nice as South Padre, but the water was nice and beach was clean.

The good beach areas aren't out by the US Lexington. You want to turn around and head to The Island for the beach.  Once you head over the bride any left at any light will get you to the beach.

Not much room at the North Beach, a lot of old locals camp out there all day.  Like you said, The Island is the best area for the beach. You can find a spot with miles of beach. Hopefully they bull dozed the sand for you, though.  I've been there a few times where it's only been flattened out for a few hundred yards.
