Astros claim Chris Coste
« on: July 10, 2009, 02:02:25 pm »
Per Footer tweets.

Interesting turn of events.Astros claim catcher Chris Coste off waivers from Philly. He'll be here Saturday. Which means someone has to go.

Presumably, a catcher will be removed. Hmmmm....

Here's a less conspiratorial explanation, Towles went on the DL in Round Rock so the Astros probably want someone more experienced than Fixler to pair with Santangelo.  If Coste can be sent down then he covers that.  Or maybe Q goes to RR?

The Philly connection strikes again.  I think you might be right, Jacksonian.  It seems a little dicey to have 2 catchers in their late 30's on the same squad...

From the press release:

Coste will report to the Astros on Saturday in Houston. To make room for Coste on the Major League roster, the club will make a corresponding roster move.

Quintero has been playing like crap for most of the season.  Does he realize he has nothing secure in terms of a job?

Q is out of options, they'd have to designate him.  I wonder if Kata is gone.

I was watching the Phillies/Reds game last night and was wondering why the Phillies were carrying three catchers. I guess they were, too. Coste always seemed like a good hitter, not sure about his calling of games or defense these days.

Given how they have "bonded" (at least according to various reports), it will be interesting to see how Wandy responds if Q is sent down.

The Astros claimed catcher Chris Coste off waivers from the Phillies on Friday. To make room for Coste, they optioned Matt Kata to Triple-A Round Rock after the club's 6-5 win over the Washington Nationals.

He was on optional assignment when they called him up, so he can be optioned again.

I wonder if this is a signal that Wade is offering Pudge as a trade chip.  It doesn't make a ton of sense to me to carry 3 catchers who don't play any other positions.

Plus, he provides a little pop off the bench (in theory).  The Astros don't have a lot of that on the bench.

Nary a right handed late inning power guy in the bunch.  Michaels has no business trying to be a power right handed hitter off the bench.

Found this nice little tidbit:
"As reported by colleague Ken Rosenthal during Saturday's MLB on FOX telecast, the Cubs might already have their replacement for injured catcher Geovany Soto if the Phillies had waited just a little longer to waive Chris Coste.

Both the Cubs and Astros put in a claim on Coste when Philadelphia waived him. Because claims are awarded in reverse standings order, the trailing team gets the player.

On Friday morning, when the waiver period expired, that team was Houston. So, the Astros got Coste. By Saturday morning, though, Houston had moved ahead of Chicago."
Link, which also explains for the unwashed that no one, Rays brass included, had any idea Ben Zobrist was going to be this good when the Huff trade was made.

I haven't yet figured out what business Michael's has as anything.

Both hitting under .200 with a combined total of 11 RBIs, Michaels and Erstad have contributed almost nothing this year.

Exactly. Cooper has been criticized regarding his handling of the pitching staff and young players, but I think his handling of the bench has been equally shitty. Garner gave his bench players spot starts every week in order to keep them sharp and guys like Lamb, Viscaino and Palmeiro gave him quality at-bats in pinch hit situations. Those guys were professional hitters, but the number of at-bats Garner got them on a consistent basis led to their success as pinch hitters.
