IE 8 Bitch
« on: July 04, 2009, 02:10:12 pm »
Does anyone else get asked to constantly install Adobe Flash Player? It doesn't happen with every website that I click on, but it is more than I feel like installing. Does anyone know a way around this constant pestering? It is beginning to impinge upon my happiness.

I've had IE8 since it went to beta and I can honestly say...it SUCKS.

Leave it up to MS to make a "new" browser that 90% of all websites won't look right on.   Good job, you fuckups.

I like having to click the COMPATIBILITY BUTTON on each page I visit and having forms delete info when I hit the TAB button.

What BD said.

It's all I've been using for weeks since growing frustrated with IE8.   Much faster.  Deals with java apps a trillion times better.

Yeah, truth is, I would have used it from the beginning, but I beta'd the Chrome too and the beta was still too buggy to use in everyday business (for example, the Adobe plugin didn't work yet and we use a shitload of PDFing at the office).

To the OP: Sounds like an Adobe problem instead of IE.  After fighting with screwed up Adobe Reader installs, I don't put anything past Adobe.

For the Chrome users, a recent audit rated Chrome the least secure browser currently available.  I think Firefox was the best but I can't remember.

That actually makes sense.  I wouldn't be surprised that as anti-virus, anti-spyware, and security software in general have become more common, folks forget how fast their machines were, prior to the presence of this type of resource hog.  I'm not suggesting anyone discard their security software, settings etc... but they do come at a price, with regard to system performance.

No love for Safari 4?

It's slick, fast, free and available for Windows.

Microsoft loves having non-standards-compatible browsers.  They didn't update IE6 for what-7 years or so until Firefox started to make serious inroads?  Apparently, they think that if they make their own freaky-deaky style of rendering, web developers will only code to their peculiarities, ignoring the standards-compliant browsers (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Opera, etc).  But now they have 3 different f'd up ways to render (IE6, 7, and 8) and it's come back to bite them in the ass.  Out of all of them, IE6 is still the most common, especially in business environments.  And web developers already know how to work around IE6's limitations...so IE7 and 8 are getting the shaft, and most sites look best standards-compliant browsers!   It's about freakin' time.  I imagine Microsoft will eventually release a standards-compliant browser, they just don't have the leverage to pull this crap anymore.

Not that it makes any difference for this thread, but IE7 overtook IE6 in market share a looooong time ago.  Remember, IE7 has been out for almost two years now.

As of May 2009 (based on statistics from http://marketshare.hitslink.com):
IE 7 - 41%
Firefox 3 - 20%
IE 6 - 17%
IE 8 - 7%
Safari 3.x - 6%

Oh, followed promptly by a "paying my first bill back to Texas from NYC" thread. EPIC!

That's certainly true. When asked about it at SXSW Interactive, Chris Wilson (IE platform architect) acknowledged that the barrier to removing IE6 from the landscape is the sheer number of large businesses that have internal web apps that are dependent on IE6's many... curious nuances. Because of this, they have no plans to force IE6 out of the picture, and no illusions about its market share eroding completely.

Apologies. The DEET ain't going anywhere, but I did manage to scrub the scent of despair off this morning. It's been replaced by a heady mix of breakfast tacos, sprinkle-covered donuts and apathy.

Also, the Off was covering the smell of whatever was floating in Barton Springs Pool, and you're welcome.
