Confederations Cup update
« on: June 24, 2009, 02:29:42 pm »
US lead spain at half 1-0.   Let's hope it turns out better than the half time lead against Italy
Always ready to go to a game.

USA was on their end of the pitch all the first half except for a few counter attacks.  The USA team is quick and only that combination (quickness and counter attack strategy) led to the first goal.  The thing about the USA is while they are not as technically skilled as the Spaniards, they are in good condition and do not give up on plays at all.  They may get beat by the first man, but they close in a hurry and that is why the Spaniards have not been able to finish some great runs.

It's a scary match to watch and I watched during my late lunch.  I would not be surprised with a 1-1 tie going to overtime in this one.  I will, however, not be surprised with another counter attack goal by the Americans if they keep up this strategy either.  They are running their behinds off this match.  There is going to be some really tired USA players after this match.

Did Altidore get a yellow card celebrating his goal?

I missed it.  I was celebrating along with everyone else.  He did draw a yellow card on a defender who pulled his shirt as they were counter attacking.  That is the only yellow card I saw given out the first half.

I think Donovan got one early for messing with the keeper.

Not for nothing, but Landon Donovan is a big jerk on the pitch.  He's small and get's pushed around, so I guess he's developing a big chip on his shoulder about it... but man, he's everything you would not want in a futbol player in terms of conduct.  His antics are getting borish.

Other than constantly looking like he's about to cry, Clint Dempsey has never done anything anywhere close to meriting a red card.

I believe Spain is the #1 ranked team in the world.  Has been for a while.  Very, very nice scalp to take.

The USA squad had a very solid strategy to play this match against Spain.  It surprised me how well prepared the USA squad was to employ the everyone defends, a few of you counter attack strategy.  I think the Spaniards were caught off guard and bit over confident that they could march into space and just dominate, eventually landing a few goals, maybe 4 or 5.  That left those huge holes in the counterattack and the quickness of Davies and Altidore was very evident.  The USA midfield was basically nothing more than a middle defense in this game.

Still, Spain kept pushing and pushing, but could never really finish because they had only seconds to try and score before a USA player was on them battling for the ball!  What an exhausting match, lots of high tension.

Great goal in the opening minutes of the half.  Tim Howard just made an incredible "save", though replays clearly show should have been a goal.  But play continues at 2-1.  brazil putting on a lot of pressure - Tim Howard is the only reason US still ahead.

It was absurd. Brazil kicked the ever-loving shit out of theunitedstatessoccerteam. Holy shit. It was absurd. So excited during the first half, but the second half was uglier than a motherfucker. Nevertheless, U.S. futbol is developing, big-time. World Cup 2010.

So does that make cricket the first language?

I am multi-lingual.

Also, if you've ever wondered from where the phrase "off his own bat" comes...it's cricket.  (Often, this is misstated as "Off his own back", which is simply wrong).  The colloquialism referring to the runs scored off hits by one batsman, as distinct and separate to the runs scored by a batting pair when the other batsman was batting.  Savvie?
