Coming to Austin
« on: June 23, 2009, 06:50:02 am »
I will be in Austin for a couple of days from July 5-7. Are there any AA meetings during that time?

I'm sure we could throw something together for one of those days.

I'll be in Austin 6/30-7/7, although it's for hernia surgery on 7/2. I should be able to get out for a meeting towards the end of the trip.

Judging from my experience, you'll be somewhat mobile by the 4th or 5th, but you'll still feel like shit at the end of your trip.

Lapro.  Had the surgery in early March and I barely have any scars left, am back to lifting and working out normally.

I'm having laparo, bilateral inguinal. I'm expecting to be knocked down for a while.

Not too bad.  Lifting is limited for a good while, but otherwise the pain level and down time is very minimal in my experience.  I'm sure this was due to the lapro procedure instead of the full monte.

I had a double done 25 years ago.  Now that was fun.  That first morning out of bed, I didnt' think I was gonna die, I was hoping I was gonna die.

Mine was a double as well; I'm thinking the lapro saved the extra pain.

Right now, I'm guessing July 6 will be the best day. The Good Guys are playing the Pirates that evening.

I'll let you know something definite by next week.

OK... the trip is on for next week and I will have some time available on Monday evening for an AA gathering. I haven't been to one to those in 8 years, so I'll be relying on others for the details.

Thanks

Well, the Tavern hasn't gone anywhere, so that's still an option. My sister and her family are possibly driving in from Alabama, which would rule me out. If they don't make it, I'm all in. Ty, will you be alive and kicking for that, or still miserable?

GMan or Flying Saucer are better options. Jack, you cannot get away for a couple of hours?

I think we're supposed to be down in New Braunfels on Monday if they come into town, so I won't be anywhere nearby. If they don't make it, or we're still in Austin on Monday, I'll show up wherever you guys decide.

I've been to the Third Base sports bar and eatery before and if you can look past the sports bar meet pickup place appeal, it's actually pretty sweet.  I expect on a Monday night, you can pretty much assume you can pick a dedicated television set to park on and watch the game.  The food?  Not bad, a little over priced.  The beer?  About the standard fair for a chic sports bar.  The wait staff?  Lovely young lass with the grunge/jean/central austin/I go to UT look down pat.  There is also a version of the same place in Round Rock (near the Dell campus) that is a little better but with not the same wait staff.

I think I can make whatever meeting is agreed upon so count me in!

I think they made very good choice for a downtown location.  Mopac and Sixth... easy, peasy.

Parking garage attached, no charge after office hours.  Plenty of space even on crowded nights.  Basically, the sports bar is at the bottom floor of the parking garage for the office building next door.

I'm saying that, when confronted by a handsome gentleman in fine attire who is waving frantically and shouting "HEY MARK! MARK!!! HEY IT'S ME! OVER HERE, MARK!!!", he gets all shy about it. Shrinking violet, that one.

They were coming out well after 8:00 last week, and there weren't a ton of them. That'll change very soon, but I'm not sure when.

That's fine, your beard can stay behind and hang out with everyone. It's not too proud.

I'll have you know my beard was a part of the 4th Bearded Infantry!

ambulatory = able to ride in an ambulance?

That may very well be the only way I can get there.

I'll be the one contacting Melvin with the time to meet, so here is my suggestion:

Third Base Sports Bar
(Mopac and 6th Street - see map)
6:30 pm for drinks and greetings
7:05 first pitch
Folks coming in and out throughout the night (I'll probably leave around 8:15ish).

I understand they have WiFi at Third Base, so maybe some realtime posting will be the order of the night.

thanks all and see you there!

I may try to get us a reserved table, inside (out of the possible rain, however it will be more noisy).  I'll need a general headcount, so this is what I have for now:

1. Noe
2. Noe's wife (tentative)
3. Ron Brand
4. MRaup
5. JimR
6. Houston
7. Houston's wife
8. JackAstro
9. JackAstros inflatable friend
10. austro
11. Taras Bulba (not to be mistaken as #9)
12. Tralfaz
13. Tralfaz missus
14. Drew Corleone
15. Ty in Tampa
16. Ty's nurse

So a table for 12 or so should do it.  Sound right?  If I missed someone, let me know... we can adjust.  I'll be calling Melvin sometime today to let him know.

Wish I had gotten in earlier, but I'm glad there are at least a handful of additional people who can now confirm that A) I'm not Steve Guttenberg and B) I don't sound like Hudson's wife. Melvin, sorry I didn't get a chance to say hi, but thanks for instigating.

Sounds like y'all had a good time. I was hoping to make it at the last minute but didn't get home from work (all hot and sweaty) 'til 8:30, by the time I walked and fed my critters and changed out of my work clothes, It was already 9:00. So I stayed home and made supper. One of these days.

It was indeed a very good time.  Nice to catch up with many of you and of course to meet some of you for the first time (in person).  Enjoyed every minute of the time spent last night with you all.  I'm not sure what the consensus was on the Third Base as perhaps a good meeting place (or not).  Certainly enough television sets to make it worthwhile of a place to have a gathering.  Of course it was a Monday night and the sports on the tube was light on that night.

The bartender/quasi night manager asked me what sort of gathering we were so he could make sure we got what we wanted in terms of sports viewing.  I let him know and he placed the Astros on all three sides of our AA meeting, with sound.  Nice job on their part.
