Royals fan checking in...
« on: June 22, 2009, 06:22:10 am »
Thought I'd introduce myself here. I signed up because I like following the games/series while getting the outlook from both sides. Besides Zack pitching, I'm looking forward to him taking some swings, afterall he took Russ Ortiz deep once before! We're losers of 5 in a row, and now 10 games under for the first time this season. My girlfriend is also from the Houston area and is an Astros fan, so some bragging rights are on the line for me...

I can respect anyone who claims Royal-fandom.  What possible motive could exist besides actually liking them?

You know, after this series with the Twins, I kind of feel the same way about Minnesota.  The Astros may have taken the series but the Twins played some solid baseball.  If I had to follow an AL team, the Twins might be my pick.

Compare that atrocity to the Astrodome again, and it's Internet go-time.

The Metrodome is nothing like the Astrodome.  The Astrodome was designed for baseball.  The Metrodome was designed to keep snow off of a football field.

OK, you're right...I just meant superficially.  Though I did kinda like the bouncy garbage bag walls.  That would be an interesting outfield to play.

I've always thought the baggie outfield walls seemed kind of cool -- the sort of unique feature that would be celebrated if the park were 50+ years old. Wish I had been able to attend a game there.

That seventh game of the 1985 "Show Me" series was one of the all-time greatest meltdowns. The Co-Ards were spectacularly awful that night.

The Royals won games 5, 6, & 7. But the Cardinal couldn't get past Denkinger's horrible blow call in game six. That's when the meltdown seeds were panted.

Brett's my non-astro all-time favorite player.  Are you referring to the blown call at first with Iorg?

It was particularly poignant that Denkinger was behind the plate in Game Seven, so that that nitwit Andujar could have a colossal meltdown over balls and strikes that got he and Whitey run. Andujar's charging of the umpire cost him ten games the next season.

I haven't read any of his crap in years, but he claims (or used to claim) to be the biggest Royal fan in the history of Royal fandom.

High Mileage, can we anticipate seeing an Avron Fogelman bobblehead anytime soon?

I also hear that Glass-bashing is far less common a practice as it once was.  May I presume that that's the case?

Growing up in Philly in the 70s, I always felt a kind of affinity for the Royals because, like the Phillies, they always seemed to have a great season, get to the playoffs and then lose.  It was good they got to the Series in 1980, but better that the Phillies beat them (to those of us rooting for the Phils at the time)!

Some of the best post-season memories of my youth were the Yankees/Royals matchups of '76, '77 and '78 (and Dodgers/Phillies in the latter two).  I remember Chris Chambliss's walk off HR to win the '76 Pennant like it was yesterday.

Well, we did have Tony Pena, Jr. bobblehead night...

Glass bashing is definitely far less common. He has allowed payroll to increase by $47M since he officially bought the team in 2000. He opened the wallet for the Gil Meche, Zack Greinke, Joakim Soria, and that Draft. He's also kept his nose out of baseball business, and has stayed out of the papers...

So, what's up with Gordon, Billy Butler, and Hochevar? All three were supposed to be big-time players, right? Are they just coming along slowly, or do you think they were over-hyped/under-developed? I've always kind of rooted for the Royals, and keep waiting for them to have their Cleveland Indians moment.

based on what i have seen in AAA, Butler has/had anger management issues.

I believe Gordon was completely rushed. He's never played a game in Triple-A. The expectations for him were great and exaggerated in my opinion. I'm looking forward to him coming back around the All-Star break, he went on the DL the first week of the season.

I believe Butler was slightly rushed. However, he's just barely 23, and he's quietly putting together a very good season. I would say the only thing coming along slowly about him are the home runs, and pretty much every expert I've read on him agrees those will come. Everybody pretty much just assumed he'd be a career DH, however his defense has developed nicely this year at first.

As for Hochevar, I haven't formed an opinion...

Finishing with "who's the pitchers in this game?" makes it art.
