Well it's the first official "Father's Day" in our household this year. My dad died long ago, so I have no idea what's typically "done" or "wanted" by Fathers on "their day" anymore, especially for a first one. Suggestions? (Daddy's got a girl, if that makes a difference.)

I "get" to take my family to the beach.

I got over expecting or wanting anything for Father's Day a while ago.

i think maybe the Dad decides what he wants and tells you.

In my house, Dad gets to go spend the days with the girls on Father's Day. Mom gets to go spend the day with the girls on Mother's Day. There is a semi-annual great debate on whether we have those two backwards and "how we did it last time".

As my kids got older (2-4 range) they loved blind folding me and taking me out to eat for a surprise. I allowed myself to be humiliated in that manner for father's day.

1st father's day suggestion - nice picture that is office worthy of you and the child together.

For me, when the kid is that young, it's more like a toned down birthday. It's much better when the kid is old enough (3 or 4 y/o and up) to understand it.

I kind of like getting a big hug from my wife and kids, a nice breakfast, and fresh coffee. Oh, and no chores that day. Otherwise, it's a normal Sunday.

I think Jane Doe may have advice for the spouses as to what their husbands want on Father's Day.

If you're going to get him a gift, make sure it's something he would want, not something you would want for him. If he plays golf, find out what kind of golf balls he likes--that is a very useful and appreciated gift. Otherwise, there's a good chance of throwing your (and his) money away.

If you're going to want him to go out for some brunch or dinner thing, make sure it's to a place he likes, not a place you would like for him to take you.

Give him the bulk of the day off to lay on his ass if he wants.

This is my first Father's Day as well, and I already told my wife that I'd like to take her and my son to the beach and then to eat somewhere in Port Aransas or Rockport.

On Mother's Day, my wife chose to go out to eat buffalo wings.

My kids are teenagers, so I am usually going out of my way and making a real effort to figure out ways to spend quality time with them. They have their own lives now, and I think I figure less and less into the picture. I don't like to think about the fact they are getting away from me. But they are. Before long, they'll be off on their own. So anyway, I try real hard to inject myself into their doings. I am sure it is annoying to them at times.

The difference with Father's Day is it is one day I can just kick back, and they'll come to me.

I don't ask for anything other than to just have a nice day, but one year my wife made a bunch of 'coupons' that she gave me in envelopes and they all revolved around a trip to Houston to see an Astros game. There were the game tickets, and then goofy but fun coupons for going to James Coney Island (I know, I know, but I really LIKE James Coney Island and I generally go there every time I'm in Houston) hugs from my oldest daughter (who went with me on the trip), a room at the ballpark hotel across from the stadium, etc. It was very nice.

This year I'm taking my two daughters (giving my wife a break) to Kentucky, to the Maker's Mark distillery (that's for me) and from there we'll go to Louisville. On Father's Day we'll be at Churchill Downs watching the races, and that should be a memorable holiday for us.
