In the pregame they commented that Cooper had said his rotation is set, and they took it to mean that Backe would be working in the pen on his activation Friday.  Also presumed the roster move would be 'yo-yo' Fulichino (although also noted that Wright still had options).

Well, between developing a young pitcher and handling a guy with a history of arm problems, this may be one of the less preferable ways to shuffle around the pitchers for Backe's return.

That's ok. I'm sure that if Backe's in the pen Coop won't get him up more than five or six times.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that Coop said Paulinos was not pitching to keep his spot in the rotation tonight.  Again, they took that to mean that he was going to have more starting opportunities.  Personally, I took it to mean it was the kiss of death (re: staying in the rotation)...

Cooper was on the Pallilo show today (it's archived if you want to venture into the place).  He was actually very articulate, but he is not backing down that the onus is on everyone (which includes himself) to pull this thing out.  Ultimately, he said the blame lays on him because he's responsible for getting the team ready to play.  But he did blame everyone soon afterwards, including the video guy (weird to say the least... sounds like an attempt at humor).

He did talk about the Oswalt incident and he reiterated that he was completely in the dark about his hand injury.  Said that Dewey didn't say anything to him and neither did Oswalt.  He did not know.

2 out bunt with a throwing error from Q to Berkman leads to a 3-base error.  Chopper between Kepp (or over Kepp) and Miggy leads to a run (unearned).  End 3: HOU 1, CIN 2

Bottom 6

Some fucking Red (Vato, evidently) reached first somehow.
2-2 count to Nix.
Umps prefer to discuss dinner plans during the middle of Nix's at-bat, rather than waiting for the end of the inning.
Nix strikes out.
Pudgy Jay Bruce goes yard on a spinning meatball.  5-1 Reds
Can the Astros just stop playing now?
Gonzalez lines to Keppinger.
Paulino is talking to himself.
Rosales, looking like Adrian Brody in Angels in the Outfield rolls out 6-3.

How wide was Q's throw on that bunt? The Cincy radio guys were running out of adjectives.

Wide enough.  Berkman leaned for it (not quite fully outstretched) but couldn't get a glove on it.  Maysonet was running over to back up the throw, but didn't quite have the wheels to get there.  With Taveras doing the running, Pence hustled over to get to the ball as it rattled around in the corner.

Berkman and Coooper argued with the umps after the play, saying that Taveras was running inside the line instead of outside the line (which it appeared he was) and that he should be out.  Umps paid 'em no head though, allowing Willy to stay on 3B.

Bottom 7

Alyson Hannigan singles to right center.  Really made a come back from that baby she had
Why does Arroyo wear a double flap helmet?  Is he a switch hitter?  Pony Leaguer?
Anyway, Arroyo has trouble getting a bunt down, striking out on three straight attempts.
Taveras at bat, Cooper wanders out on the field, doing a dead on Dusty Baker's kid impression.
Taveras flips a 0-2 slider into right.  2 on, no out.  Tejada goes to the mound and instructs Arias to really stick it up Cooper's ass.
Hairston poses and sort of watches himself fly out to Pence in right.
JD and Brownie are rehashing the 0-23 record trailing after 7.
Vato is pissed and pouted his way into a strike out.

Sampson in, just because the Astros have to throw at least 3 pitchers, regardless of, well, anything.

Nix rolls a ball under Sampson into center.
Bruce triples past Berkman. Nix scores. Reds 6.
Gonzales bounces to Keppinger, 3-1
Rosales at bat...Sampson seems to be trying to throw as far outside as possible on 1-2.
Just misses another extra-base hit down the right field line.
Contact play, 6-2 retires Bruce at home, Rosales goofily runs to first on the FC.
Sampson nibbles to Willow Rosenthal and walks him. Runners on 1st and 2nd
Arroyo is going to hit, and pitch the ninth.
Sampson fucks around but stikes out Arroyo.

Arroyo attempting to finish it off for himself.

Bourn slices a 1-2 pitch into left, but it hangs up PO-7
Tejada legs out a double to left past a narcoleptic Rosales
Berkman sacrifices Tejada over to third. 2 down.
Idiot crowd is begging for a strikeout.
Lee bounces out to short, 6-3.  Fuck what the Reds' fans want.

Reds sweep.  Cooper weeps.

We need to get a collective grip and remember that we love The Game.

I knew Baseball; Baseball was a friend of mine.  Barrister, this is not baseball.
In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

What is a redwing and a blackhawk?  Sounds like a fashion show gone horribly wrong!

you'll have to ask one of the raups what a red wing is, but a black hawk is an indian.  the black hawk is sad now though.

At least that was over quick.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

It seemed like Chicago played the entire overtime a man down. The puck barely ever left their end.

Same song, second verse.  Same result.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

That surprises me although he was certainly deserving.

Just to put the 2009 Astros in perspective, we've resorted to talking about hockey in the GZ.  Hockey.
Better than talking about getting swept by the fucking Rangers and Reds, I guess.
Don't think twice, it's alright.

I hope Nick Kronwall hits Sidney Crosby's whiny ass so hard that horrible dirt-stache he's sporting falls off. Good lord, talk about a travesty of a playoff beard.

Don't worry.  After Crosby thumbed his nose at the hockey gods by skating with the trophy after the Carolina series, he's probably already got lice in his "beard".
