http://www.spikesnstars.com/2009/04/26/the-sns-selection-for-astros-player-of-the-month-april/

We need your help:

1. Help us name this award.
2. Vote for who should win our very first Player of the Month award (voting ends at the end of this week since that is when the month ends).

thanks!

It's got to be Wandy or Blum, and my vote is for Wandy.

The Bruzwello.  Borrowing from Cedeno, Cruz, Biggio and Bagwell.

And Jeff Keppinger is my first nomination.

I know we've already used it, but I think this would be a nice thing to call The Mihoba since it'll probably be more visible to people than the POTW. Somebody might even reference this award somewhere and it would be nice for it to carry his name.

Is it unreasonable to have a pitcher of the month and a position player of the month?

How about just "The SnS Astros Player of the Month?" It identifies the site, which I think is good.

I like that idea, or if you want to go a little more obscure, how about the Can of Orange? The Orange Can? Something like that... would make for a pretty cool trophy- a big ol' can spray-painted orange, maybe some lacquer, plop it on a base, there you go.

Why not follow MLBs lead here....

The Citigroup SNS Astros Player of the Month Award Presented by Chrysler.

You'll notice, I've already selected sponsors whose image could not possibly be further impaired by commercial association with the April 2009 Houston Astros.

For my money, Valverde.  That stork act he pulled against the Dodgers, (I"ll beat cha standing on one leg) is just the kind of symbolic gesture this team needs.  Sure it preserved only one game and may have aggravated his injury so that he had to sit out several more games, including one he pitched in, but I don't think you can beat the hustle face he exhibited.  And isn't that what we're looking for, bottom line?

I'm thinking we could even consider a "Spike" award of the month and a "Star" award of the month.  "Spike" award for display of play that Tyrus would love, nothing dirty, just hard play.  "Star" for excellence of performance.  My "Spike Award" would be Papa Grande and my "Star Award" would be Wandy.

Would make for nice plaques with our site name on them and then if we could, get someone to deliver the awards to our honored player.  Too bad we don't have a Tony Llama pair of boots to go with the award, but hey, it's a start!

If we do a "Spike" and a "Star" award for the month, we can limit candidates for said award as three apiece:

Spike candidates: Valverde, Quintero and Pudge (maybe Pence)
Star award: Wandy, Blum and Bourn

Since the Headhunter videos have been met a couple of yawns and a collective "who cares" by pretty much both audiences, Nuno and I are working on thinking of different things we could do, including potentially setting up interviews.  At the very least, we could ask Nuno to deliver them for us.

With the brutally honest level of discussion on this board, I think any SnSer would actually want to stay out of the ass-kicking range of any current or former Astro.  Better to let Nuno do it.

I think it will work to have a combo platter of Spike Award and Star Award show, have one of Nuno's infamous young lady interviewee select the winner and then present the award as part of the video program or even live.  Maybe even present it as a question "Hey did you know you were the Spike Award winnder this month?"

Just so everyone is clear on this:

Two awards, we will not deliver them to the players however they will be prominently displayed on our home page in case the players get wind that they received an honor from us.  The two monthly awards are:

The "Spike Award of the Month": awarded to the player who displays some major inspirational hard play during the month above and beyond the call of duty.  This can be singled out on one particular play or a sense that said player is bringing it every day.  This is also known in some circles as the SnS Hustle Face award.

The "Star Award of the Month": awarded to the player we feel has performed at peek, helping the team win.  Usually it would be a quick glance at the stats to see who has the numbers to back up getting this recognition.  We're not against that, but some things in terms of performance can't be all measured in stats (although most things can).  Some things in terms of performance excellence can also be measured by little things like always throwing to the right base, hitting a cut off man, running the bases in such a way as to remind one of Bagwellian Baseball IQ, breaking up double plays and things such as this.

So for April 2009, the nominees are:

Spike Award: Valverde, Quintero and Pudge
Star Award: Bourn, Wandy and Blum (edging out Tejada for the third spot).

Add your vote here if you'd like or maybe I can use some sort of voting thingy in this thread.  I'll see if I can do that.  All votes are in on April 30th.

I already voted, but I just wanted to throw out the name of Carlos Lee.  I don't think we can seriously talk about "helping the team win" and not mention his team leading 17 RBIs.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.
