Almost looks like there were more folks in the stands in Pittsburgh then there appear to be at MMPUS today.  Hard to believe...

on my mlb.tv feed, there's been an extra 5-10 seconds at the end of the inning where you can hear the broadcast. After the nice 6-4-3 turned by the Astros Jd said "take that, Isabel" and Brownie added "screech at that bad boy." (Pattie Smith was interviewing hitter Janish's family in the stands, including Aunt Isabel... Pattie tactlessly proclaimed that she had heard Isabel's "screech" when Janish got a hit earlier).

« Reply #46 on: April 20, 2009, 08:35:24 pm »
Top 6: Hampton on the hill

Votto: 2 hopper to Bekman on the 2-1 pitch, Berkman steps on the bag for the out.  1 out, none on.

Phillips: hard grounder to 3B.  2 outs, none on.

Encarnacion: sharp 1-hopper to Tejada's left, Tejada goes down to get it, gets a glove on it but can't get a handle on it (scored a hit, good call).  2 outs, runner at 1B.

McDonald: walks on 3-1 pitch Hampton though was a strike.  2 outs, runners at 1B and 2B.

Hannigan: struck out swinging on a nice inside slider.  3 outs.

Middle 6: HOU 1, CIN 2

I don't think that will be a problem. I don't remember getting screwed by the Mavs in the past.

Good. Now I can pull for the Mavs full-throttle.

on my mlb.tv feed, there's been an extra 5-10 seconds at the end of the inning where you can hear the broadcast.

I propose that Janish's new nickname be "Isabel's Screech."

Berkman: massive homer to the 2nd deck in right.  HOU 2, CIN 2.  2 outs, none on.

Lee: homered just missing the 'W' in foul powl in left.  HOU 3, CIN 2  2 outs, none on.

I went back on the DVR and looked again. Willy T came up with the ball just as Pence was rounding first, and then Pence turns it on and tries for second. Willy throws him out by two miles and is back in the dugout before Pence gets to second.

DoRayMe were talking about the Reds and Astros.  Basically, it went something like this:

Reds are the worse hitting club in the NL, a .210 team BA.  Houston has a team BA of .242, good for #9 out of 16 NL clubs.  Here is the rub, even being the worse batting club in the NL, the Reds have scored more runs than the Astros (42 runs to 36).  So again, the Reds are the worse hitting club yet they have more runs scored than the Astros.

Hmmmm... so Do (of the DoRayMe) opines that the reason for this is the Astros woeful RISP BA for the Astros.  So I have to go take a look for myself and see if this holds true.  Well guess what, it most certainly does.  Here is what our middle of the lineup is doing with RISP:

#3 Berkman - w/RISP: BA .167 (not worse amongst the starters, but pretty bad), OBP .333, SLG .417 (fourth best on the team).
#5 Lee - w/RISP: BA .231, OBP .385 and SLG .333

So who has the worse stats w/RISP?  Not Hunter Pence, but look at this - BA .182 (third worse amongst the starters), OBP .267, SLG .182.  And to think, this is not the worse stats amongst the starters, even though it is horrible.  That honor belongs to Pudge - BA .091, OBP .167, SLG .182.  Oh my goodness, you would think that free swingers like Pence and Rodriquez would be better seeing as how they can hit a baseball well.  But something happens to these grip it and rip it duo that causes the special powers to leave them.  But Berkman?  And Lee?  When you add those two guys to the mix, the free swingers Pence and Pudge trying to flail there way to bring some ducks in is getting comical.  I'm not saying I blame Lee and Berkman, but if you get pass those two, then you have a really good shot of getting the Astros to strand those ducks.  And does anyone now think that LOBsters are a problem?  I don't, people are getting on, the team can hit well enough, but when it gets to the point when you need a situational hit from our middle of the lineup, if it's Pence or Pudge your wishing with your heart at that point.  If it's Lee or Berkman, you have to wonder what the heck is going on, that is what these two get big bucks to do!

Wow, I would pay cash american for a picture of that look.  It would be the SnS banner for the rest of the year!

Top 8: LaTroy on the hill

Encarnacion: bouncer to pitcher, Hawkins knocks it down and throws to 1B for the out.  1 out, none on.

Dickerson (PH for McDonald): held up on the 3-2 pitch outside for the walk.  1 out, runner on 1B.

Hannigan: high 1-hopper to Berkman who throws to Hawkins for the out (runner going on the play so no chance for a DP on that one).  2 outs, runner on 2B.

Janish: hit in the back arm with a fastball.  2 outs, runners at 1B and 2B.

Nix (PH for Arroyo): fouled off the end of the bat out of play (0-1), Pudge visits the mound, called strike (0-2), struck out swinging at a low curve.  3 outs.

Middle 8: CIN 4, HOU 3

My sarc meter was off, I'm betting you're not serious.  But I will say this: I expect Lee and Berkman to change those stats.  Pudge and Pence?  Time will tell, but it could become worse before it becomes better with free swingers.  And Jason Smith is back on the bench where he belongs.  Thank goodness.

I know, I thought it was funny.  But looking at those stats and realizing that Pudge hits 7 and Pence hits 5 means that if Lee and Berkman are going to take more walks and leave the job of driving in runs to those two (plus Blum), then Coop will have to consider his lineup again.  Just saying.

Bottom 8: 2 outs, bases juiced.  HOU 3, CIN 4

Spaz: called strike, fastball on the low inside corner (0-1), fouled back (0-2), barely lays off the high heat (1-2), ball just inside, looked a lot like the first called strike (2-2), foul tip on inside corner fastball (2-2), foul tips another one, high heat this time (2-2), ball inside (3-2), fouled back (3-2), struck out looking on a marginal pitch, bottom of the plate I guess...  3 outs.

End 8: HOU 3, CIN 4

*sigh*  I knew it was over when Milo and Raymond decided to say stuff about "he's in a spot where it's his job to be in *these situations*".  Damn, I was hoping the BBGs were not paying attention to that very fact and were going to forgive Cooper.  But you know what, Berkman was probably the guy who is most hurt that he had a chance to drive in a guy from third with only one out and did not do it.

It must of been painful to have to watch Pence try to do something he's... well... not very good at doing.  Unless the pitcher is brain dead and throws him a nice inside fastball.

Hmm, you just don't expect a called 3rd strike in an 11 pitch at bat.

Agreed.  but at least he had a solid approach in that situation and didn't swing at everything.   I'm still perplexed why Rhodes never threw him a breaking ball though.

Berkman is lost at the plate right now.

Fix Berkman and that goes a long way to fix the lineup.  Lineup if broke right now and Pence is exposed as the free swinging happy go lucky running fool.  He was so excited that Berkman and Lee hit back-to-back homers that he decided to go take a stroll around the bases.  That's how excited he was.

his at bat was the killer in the inning.   you expect lance to at least get the runner home from 3rd with less than two outs.

Yes, he does, but at least there was positive progress made by Pence.  Now he needs to continue to apply the good things he did that at bat and not get discouraged by the poor result.

Baby Steps.  First thing is to get him to quit going 1-2-3 sit down in those situations.  He battled.  He keeps that up, he'll win his share.  So that is a good thing.  Had he gone 1-2-3, looking at the last strike or swinging would not have mattered, he would be a considerable lost cause to me.  He showed a glimer of hope at least.  That is good.  Hey, it's sumpthin!

Funny you said this because that was a thought I had earlier.  The Reds aren't coming in here as world beaters.  They're struggling.  Houston had a two straight winning streak.  And this is a four game series.  The very last thing you'd expect is to lose three of four to a team that didn't look that great (their ACE got banged around by the Astros in their only win).  But man-oh-man, simple situational hitting 101 and Houston wins three maybe even four this series.

That's gotta be eating someone up something fierce.  If not Coop (and I'm sure it is), then WadeSmith for sure.

I don't expect it either because with that many pitches, I expect that the batter has a fucking clue about not taking close pitches with two strikes.  Then I remember this was Pence we're talking about and my expectations go out the window.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.
