The House That Ruth Cursed?
« on: April 18, 2009, 03:46:25 pm »
The Indians just dropped a 14 spot...yes, that's 14 runs...on the Yankees in the 2nd inning.  Perhaps someone's not too thrilled with the new digs.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

That was hilarious. It was, what, 13 hits? It will be interesting to see if RF continues to be a homer haven all summer.

I just realized that new Yankee Stadium is 314' down the RF line, but with an 8' fence. Where's all the indignation?

The old Yankee Stadium used to be 296 down the line with a 3.5 foot fence.  They made it 314 with an 8 ft fence in 1988.  The new park is as deep or deeper down the line than the old one.

Right, but the old stadium was built whenever. I thought there was some edict about the minimum dimensions of new stadiums.

It's now 20-2 with the Indians still batting in the 5th.  The Indians have hit 5 HRs today in that bandbox.  So far.

20 runs, 20 hits, and 171 pitches through 5 innings. That's quite a pitching performance.

There is.  It has to be at least 250 feet.

ETA:  Oops, fields constructed after 1958 are required to be 325 feet.  Obviously that is not enforced, as many of the new parks don't meet that requirement.

20 Run Field. What a joke of a stadium.

Was talking to a buddy in NY yesterday, and he told me that the stadium is open such that air can flow through the stands.  Currently, this means a jet stream out to left as old Yankee Stadium is blocking the air coming through and out to RF.  Once they implode the old one, there will be a jet stream out to that tiny fence in RF.

My wife and I were at the stadium for that 22-4 debacle.  The place is beautiful, with a jumbo-tron reminiscent of the Godzillatron at DKR Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin.  The field was perfect.  One thing that I thought was, errr, unnecessary, was the calorie listing beside each item in the concession menu board.  Really?    They also had Trash, Recycling, and Composting trash cans at each aisle.  Idiots threw their plastic cups in the compost heap.

But yes, those pop flies carried over the wall a few times.  We were shocked at about 3 of them.

Ticket prices were expensive but not horrible.   For front row seats in section 227B, they were $90 per ticket.  Similar Club level seats at Minute Maid are $52 per.

Overall, a great time and the commute was a breeze with the Subways to/from Manhattan.

The new stadium beyond the bleachers is more open than the last one.  They have air gaps to the outside/elevated subway on each side of the centerfield scoreboard.

The old stadium is to be imploded this summer, but I doubt it will have that much of an impact.  It is dwarfed by the new stadium (which is 60% larger).  The old stadium is about 200 yards away on the first base line side of the new stadium, so if anything, the wind currents affected would be the ones going out to left field.

I was watching the Saturday debacle on-and-off, and it appeared to me that the "questionable" shots were the ones to RF that just kept carrying. (Maybe ValpoCory can confirm that.) If something happens that effectively shortens RF even further, 22 run scores may become commonplace.

Especially if Wang keeps pitching.

I think that's a NYC law now for chain fast-food places; I know I've seen it in every Chipotle. Maybe the ballpark concessions fall under that rule.

There is a councilman in NYC trying to propose a ban on fast food chains near any schools. Printing a calorie listing is nothing.

Yankees build a bandbox, blame it on everyone else.

“It’s possible that the ballpark is a home run-type park,” Cashman said “We’ll see. The ball is going farther in every park, not just ours.”

There have been 26 home runs at the stadium, one more than the previous record for the first six games at a major league venue. That had been established at Kansas City’s Municipal Stadium in 1955, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

I think Cashman has gotten progressively more stupid due to a prolonged exposure to Steinbrenner, Jr..

I see a mixture similar the the 2000 Astros:  bad pitching, good hitting, and a park that is playing slightly smaller than intended.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

And the fact that there are two younger Steinbrenners for him to contend with makes your theory even more compelling.

Yankees build a bandbox, blame it on everyone else.

And now could have problems attracting free agent pitchers to play there, like the AstrosOlney link

And if the home runs continue to fly out of Yankee Stadium and pitchers' ERAs climb over 5.00, they could have as difficult a challenge in luring free-agent hurlers as the Rockies, Rangers, Reds, Phillies and Astros have had through the years. "Nobody will want to go to pitch there if it's a bandbox," one veteran Brewer said yesterday, musing about the conditions.
