Heard at the weekend that the 'Dome is on the verge of being condemned.  Hundreds of violations have been cited, mostly the result of virtually zero maintenance since it lost its primary functions.  Expectation is for condemnation then implosion.

So much for it being turned into a huge indoor casino complex.

Mixed feelings come over me. Implosion is probably best.

I might actually have to go watch that.

After they built Reliant Stadium, she looked tired and old.

OK, 2 major things here:

1.  About "Big Love" - this show reiterates my long-held belief that polygamy is crazy.  Why would any man subject hiself to 3x the amount of everyday household drama?

2. Jeannie Tripplehorn is still hot.  She doesn't have her Basic Instinct-era fastball, but she's still got more game than either of the sister-wives.

I've heard comdemning the Dome is a done deal.  The Rodeo used to pony up large sums of cash to keep it up to standard since football and baseball moved on to shinier, more expensive places, and they finally had enough and moved the "Hideaway" or whatever to a tent.  Apparently, there is now a major rat problem.  Good memories at that place.

Man, that's really sad.  First AstroWorld and now the 'Dome.  My childhood is evaporating.  Guess it was inevitable, though.

The county and the city got into a dispute about getting the Dome back up to code before the rodeo, something about whether the Dome was still grandfathered under old code. In any event, I recall reading somewhere that the cost of demolition and removal was still more than just keeping up minimal maintenance for the next two or three decades, but maybe that's changed. Plus, they could probably charge $18,485 per space for the super-duper-VIP-get-your-own-personal-ball-washer parking, judging by how much they charge for parking in a dirt lot 13 miles away.

I know that it's fiction and all, but those are some damn nice looking drama makers.  I believe the pertinent issue was addressed in an episode where the guy is popping Viagra like mini mints.

ETA:  Implode the dome.  I'm sure that if it happens, it will be pure insanity within a 10 mile radius of the curious trying to witness the moment.  Maybe I'm too young but I just don't have that huge emotional attachment to the dome.  One of the best dates I ever went on was at the dome, so it's not without good memories ( walking up to ticket booth and lady approaches to ask if we want free tickets.  I asked if they were nosebleed section.  She said I'd be pleased with them, and they were free.  Homeplate!  Date impressed, things went well that night.).  I digress.  Use the space for parking.

it woulld be the end of an era. inside baseball who would have thunk it. sad times and sometimes i just sit and think bout how lonely it must be inside that place.. and all the banners and such just left there.. i remember it in its glory when i was able to go back to zwolle intermeidate and say yes I had been to the dome. even in the last season the old girl still had some magic about her.. can you imagine having to explain to your grand children what a wonderous place that was
forever is composed entirely of nows

Well, go on.  Who do you think is the rat condemning the place?  Politician, city councilman.. or maybe an inside job??

I heard the same about the cost to demolish vs. maintain.

From a purely economic standpoint, I find it hard to believe that there isn't a better alternative when you look 20-30 years out. Can the Dome really safely survive another 20-30 years with minimal maintenance? It sounds like they are ignoring the fact that at some point in the future the Dome will have to be significantly restored or destroyed. You can't pay minimal maintenance forever.

Limey, what is this I hear about them destroying the Olympic Stadium after 2012? I was poking around seeing how much stadiums cost to demolish and saw some article about the possibility that they destory the stadium and rebuild a football stadium in its place. Did I read that right, have you heard anything about it?

That's all news to me.  But if they use the same crew who built the new Wembley, it'll be ready in 2022.

I understand that London is building the stadium to Olympic size and standards for 2012 and will then scale it back considerably after that.

Limey, what's your take on the royal embrace yesterday? Apparently, tongues are wagging saying it was a terrible breach of protocol! I'm wondering if she didn't think it was Diana returned with an awesome tan or something along those lines...

Here's what popped up when I was searching...

Quote
The £525million Olympic stadium set to be the flagship of London 2012 could be demolished to make way for a Premier League football ground. Emergency plans have been drawn up to flatten the showpiece venue once the Games are over and replace it with a purpose-built soccer stadium. It comes amid fears the 80,000-seat stadium could be too expensive to subsidise after the event - leaving it a 'white elephant'.
