My sister is inexplicably interested in rugby. She just told me that Ireland was "top of the table in the six nations". Should I be concerned?

Don't know why you should be concerned. It's true.

Rugby is an awesome game. No interest in it is inexplicable.

That's (Six Nations) a big tournament this time of year, over in Europe. I remember riding on trains south out of London loaded with rugby fans last year this time, and they were all lit and happy. Quite entertaining, just watching the fan aftermaths, even if I know nothing about the game.

Since it became properly professional, teams can no longer wait for the always-talented but usually hung way over Ireland team to run out of steam 10 minutes before the end. They are an excellent side.

And I'm always reminded of 1999 Five Nations (before Italy joined the fun) when Ireland tanked horribly. A radio station in Dublin was doing a man-in-the-street poll asking the question "The Irish rugby team is being accused of using performance enhancing drugs--do you think they should ask for their money back?"
I always like Six Nations time, but it snuck up on me this year. I'll have to find a place to watch the Ireland-England match in Feb 28.

No, she actually plays rugby. She's also 5'2". She has a concussion, a broken nose, and several broken ribs to go along with her hobby. But, on the plus side, the time differential means she has to get up at 8 am and start drinking immediately.

Which has the slight inconvenience of destroying your weekend before noon on Saturday, but that's a small price to pay.

I have an England shirt which is the last iteration before they went to the spray-on type. It's the last rugby shirt I'll ever own.

I'm not knocking rugby. I just don't understand how a girl raised Deep in the Heart O' Texas can become so fascinated with it. It's not like we spent any time in the UK when we were kids, either. Whenever we hang out with her friends, it's almost all they talk about. Sure, there's the typical shoes, hair, whatever but it's 90% rugby. And most of these girls look normal, they're not 6'5" sides of beef (NTTAWT). Anomalous!

there are LOTS of rugby teams in this area. HS football players play it, and there are many adult teams too.

One of my mates from Limeyland is a big rugby fan, and was at a high school game last Friday. He was quite impressed with the grasp of the game, but the kids' ball-handling skills (insert joke here) were a little rudimentary. Not bad for 15-year olds who haven't grown up watchign the sport, though.

Anyway, one of the parents and her kid joined us at the Richmond Arms on Saturday morning to watch Wales-England. As the camera panned down the line up of sideways noses, cauliflower ears and permanently furrowed brows, I said to him "One day, you too could look like this."

It's pretty popular in Houston as well. I know several people who are on the adult club team.
