What's there to do in Toronto?
« on: February 11, 2009, 01:17:41 pm »
So the girlfriend has a photo shoot for some clothing company in Toronto coming up and I get to play chaperon for a few days.  I've never visited America's Hat but have heard good things about Toronto.  What's there to do?  Any sights I must see?  Bars I must drink at?  I know one thing I'll probably be doing is freezing my ass off.

If you get a chance and have any interest at all, check out the Hockey Hall of Fame. It's pretty bad ass.

I concur. CN Tower is pretty cool, but a bit pricey.

The hockey HOF is awesome.  You get to take your picture with the Cup.

This place, despite the silly name, is a great bar/restaurant in a neat neighborhood.  They brew several of their own beers, and is one of the few places on this continent where you can get a proper cask ale.  Also, it arguably has the best poutine you can find outside of Quebec, and if this is your first time to Canada you can't get away without clogging your arteries with some poutine.

I've been to Canada a dozen times or more, driven from one end to the other once. Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, and several backwater fishing camps, still never was offered or even heard of poutine. I looked it up and it seems widespread and common but still somehow it avoided my consciousness until now. I also feel like I really missed out on something and a bit paranoid, like they conspired against me, to keep me in the dark, as if I were not worthy of such a great concoction. What did I do wrong?

I wish I could remember the name of the place I had wine and tapas at the last time I visited Toronto. I can call my friend and find out the name, if you like that kind of stuff. It was excellent, BTW.

Have you ever made disparaging remarks about Rush, SCTV or hockey?

Poutine is definitely on the list to try.  The stuff looks awful but I can't help myself.

It's awfully good.

I will say that the true Quebecois way is the only way to go, and that requires genuine cheese curds.  The rest of Canada anglicized the dish by putting shredded chedder on it, and that simply doesn't do the trick.  If you're going to eat the stuff, make sure its the real deal.  It's not worth the cost of the lipitor otherwise.

I once said that Neal Pert's lyrics were mawkish and obtuse, but I should get credit for once calling The Barenaked Ladies geniuses. Or was that just considered stating the obvious, while the other was the wine talking?

Poutine and hockey hall of fame! That right there sounds like a hell of a start.

Depends on which is which.  doesn't everyone think barenaked ladies are genius, though?

The Drake (http://www.thedrakehotel.ca/dining) is a bar/hotel combo that was a pretty good time when I was there back in '04. No idea what's like now, but worth checking out.
