Does Michael Young have a ranch in Texas?
« on: January 12, 2009, 11:56:26 am »
Wants out of Arlington after being told he must move from SS to 3B

Would the Astros be interested if they're on his short list?
Would Tejada move to 3rd?
Does this thread count as "sources say Young to Houston is being considered"

He's expensive and plays shitty defense at a position he doesn't want to move from, so I don't expect the Astros will be terribly interested.

See Tejada, Miguel.  Oh wait...

Difference is, upon seeing Tejada most agreed he's a pretty solid SS.  Having watched Young, I can attest he is not.  Mostly for range, there are gaping holes between the areas he and the 3B cover and more between he and 2B.  Not the player covering second, actual second base.  He used to have a pretty good arm so he had that.  This could potentially extend his career.  I don't know what he's crying about...

He's getting paid like $15 million a year for the next five years.  He hit less home runs than Tejada in a ridiculous bandbox of a stadium.  Why the hell would we want him?

Young, 32, was told of the position change in December and said he is opposed to moving to third base because he was given no choice in the matter.

"I want to make that clear. I've been basically told what's in store for me if I hope to be a Ranger next year. That I'm a third baseman. That's why I'm taking the stance I'm taking."

Young, told the team he will not move to third base to make way for highly touted prospect Elvis Andrus.

Up until now, I didn't know that Michael Young was a shithead.

Yeah, we're talking about the worst defensive shortshop in baseball (or 2nd worse behind Jeter, depending on who you ask) and he won't move to 3B?  Ridiculous.

If he does get traded, where do you think he'll end up?  Maybe the Reds-Rangers pipeline is still open.

Young will move...

"After some careful consideration over the last month or so, and in an effort to not let this thing drag out and move forward at the task at hand -- which is winning baseball -- I've decided to put an end to this and start bearing down and playing third base."
....
"In my heart, I'm a middle infielder," Young said. "I don't believe the team was really pursuing a trade. They were trying to get me to play third base. So, I didn't see much of a point in letting this thing drag on."

My old man loved Chuck Connors in The Rifleman.  When I later told him that Chuck played for the other team, he couldn't believe it.

Remember Connors in "Branded?"

Right ... Gene Conley played for the Celtics (as well as the Braves & Red Sox).  Connors played for the Cubs one year, but no NBA team that I can recall.

Connors played for the Celtics, or at least signed with them.  Don't know if he saw any game action.  Connors also played with the Brookly Dodgers, in addition to the Cubs.

I'll take your word on the basketball thing ... I don't really follow it.  As for baseball, he appeared in 1 game with 1 AB for the trolley-dodgers, so saying he "also played for" them is both true and misleading.  He got quite a bit of playing time the next year for the cubbies, though.

How is it misleading?  He's a regular Moonlight Graham.

Like I said true but also misleading in the sense that a phrase like "played for X & also Y" conjures up a ration of playing time somewhat different than 99.9x% for one team and 0.0x% for another.  Willie Mays "also played" for the Mets, but he is remembered as a Giant, and leaving the "also played for" comment off of a brief biography would be incomplete even as it does a better job of describing his career in general.

Chuck Connors' Celtic Stats

FG% .252

FT% .471

I'm not sure how it was back in the '40s but those some bad numbers.
