Sunday Morning Trivia
« on: January 11, 2009, 10:12:53 am »
G'mornin' folks,

A couple of easy ones to start with and then I'm going to slap you around a little.

Who is the only Astros hurler to have started 40 games for Houston in a single season?

Turk Farrell?
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

Turk Farrell?

No, Turk never started more than 29 in any one season for Houston.

Good guess, but his high was 38, which he did 3 times.

Ryan?

No.  He started 41 for the Halos but never more than 35 for the Astros.

BTW, I'm not giving any clues on this one.

Thinking of #1 Astro starters through the years, Ruess just doesn't come to mind. Thanks for the clue.

I remember being somewhat dismayed when we acquired Reuss, but he turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

He was a youngster when we got him, for a song and a dance, and the mistake was trading him for Milt May.  Johnny Edwards was old and Skip Jutze wasn't the answer so there was a need for a catcher. This was that time frame where Houston continually traded for veteran catchers.  Reuss was just another LHP that the Astros let get away.

Likewise, I recall being upset when we traded him. Those were the days before everyone realized that you don't trade left-handed starting pitching.

It really surprises me that Farrell didn't start more than 29 games for Houston. He did come out of the bullpen occassionally IIRC.

He was almost as old then as Jim is now ... 29 was pretty good!
