According to My Facebook Friend "Shiner Beer"...
« on: January 08, 2009, 11:35:56 am »
Commemorator is on the shelves in Austin as of today (Brodie Ln Spec's).  No idea about Houston, or even if the Austin report is true.

Same applies to this review, which describes the beverage as a "stand up double".

Seems rather appropriate for a dopplebock.

According to Spec's - Houston.....

Downtown location has about 70 cases. No other Spec's in the Houston area will have them for about a week.

Might have to talk to the boss about a little roadie this afternoon...

I got a report that as of yesterday in Central Market N Lamar (Austin), there was a slot with a placard for Shiner 100.  It was unknown if they had sold out or had just cleared room.  It sounds like the latter.

Report from Specs downtown was that they were not supposed to have it and Whole Foods had already called over to Shiner whining that they didn't get theirs.

The Beer Manager (yes, that's a real job) at the Bunker Hill HEB claimed this past weekend that she expects it tomorrow in her store.

Also, she has large...tracts of land.

Any word on San Antonio gets it?  We're closer to Shiner, dammit!

Probably after Austin, Houston, and DFW.

By the way, one of the excellent gifts I received for Christmas was this awesome book.

As with many reviews, it's more about the reviewer and his prose than the subject matter of the review. Fruit, bread and dimension are not words that I associate with beer drinking - but that's just me.

Also, how credible is a review that contains the phrase "up front there is some good flavors there"?

Spec's Austin at Brodie confirmed having it, and Mrs. JackAstro confirmed that it will be awaiting my return to the homestead. She is a saint. I shall post my tasting notes later in the evening, and promise not to include the word "mouthfeel", which is awkward for everyone involved. There will probably be some disparagement of OU mixed in, however. As there should be.

I believe "mouthfeel" was born out of the dubbing of Iron Chef into English.

As of 10:49pm, this Commemorator is delicious - a worthy A- edition to the family of Doppelbocks - and OU still sucks.

Stopped by the big Spec's on my way home from work.  After despairing that there was none in the cooler or where the cases of Shiner normally are, I resigned myself to having a couple of Optimators.  That was when I realized I was standing next to a display of several cases of the 100.  In the quick cooler now, I look forward to giving this beer a thorough examination over the next few days.

Had my first one Friday night.  I like it a lot.  It's the closest to a genuine German beer that Shiner's made yet.  And I'm all about the German.  Hope it'll be available out in Midland, America when I get back tomorrow.

I had four bottles and a 16 oz t-bone last night. No ill effects this morning. I'm still not convinced. More study needed.

100 & 97 (aka Black Lager) are in a dead heat for me ... styles are too different to really compare.
99 & Bock are close.

Yes.

99 is a pretty good imitation of a true German Helles vom Faß.  At least as good as the imports available in the US (though I would rather be drinking a Spaten on Marienplatz).

Bock is sort of between the German Märzen & Bock styles.  If I can't get Einbecker (and I can't in this country), then it is a pretty good choice.

But Black is a dead ringer for the black lager at U Fleků in Prague ... almost like they stole the receipe.

And 100 compares very well to German Doppelbocks like Optimator, Salvator, Celebrator, etc.  In fact, based on a recent comparison with the latter, I'll take Commemorator any day.  Maybe it's the freshness?

But Black is a dead ringer for the black lager at U Fleků in Prague ...

That must be fun to order.

Never spent any time a U Fleku, but took up a bar stool quite a few times at Upetnika.  Prague is a great town.

Another nice place.  I also loved U Zlateho Ružen, U Medviků, the Letní Restaurace on Staromák and perhaps most of all, U Svateho Tomaše.  U Kalichů (favorite watering hole of The Good Soldier Švejk) is surprisingly un-tourist-y, too, but the beer is not as good.

Maybe it's the freshness?

i still like Celebrator the best of the doppels available here, but 100 is right in there. as i may have told you the other day, the very best doppelbock i had during my trip to Beer Heaven (Bavaria) is brewed at the Andechs Monastery west of Munich. it is available on Marienplatz in the Monastery's restaurant, but alas, it is not available in the USA.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

I've been to Prague several times, and cannot remotely remember the name of any restaurant, pub or bar that I went to.  Probably because I could never remotely pronounce them.

I suppose a comment like "everything is pronounced just like it is spelled" might be out of place?  Seriously, though ... once you get the hang of all the hooks and length marks, it really is that simple.

Yeah ... I should have given you an "assist" on my recent Celebrator sample ... I enjoyed visiting with you at G-Man.  maybe they'll have 100 on tap there by the next time.

It's been a while.  Used to sing with a Czech folk song group at weddings, etc. and most of them were at SPJST halls in places like Elm Mott, Morava, Weimar, Sealy, Snook, Cestohova ... almost made it to Shiner once.

Late to the dance here, but I finally found some 100 in my neck of the woods and I thoroughly enjoyed it.  I was in Austin a couple weeks back, and when I stopped in at Gingerman, they didn't have 100 on tap, but they did have Optimator which I tried for the first time instead.  Very, very nice beer, especially on tap.

Just an FYI, but they did have 100 on tap at Logan's on 6th, at least they did ~2 weeks ago.  I would have tried it, but we got there right before closing time and before I could order one my friend put a pint of Guinness in front of me.
Living is easy with eyes closed.
