Sunday Trivia
« on: November 16, 2008, 09:58:35 am »
A few posers for your trivial entertainment on this beautiful Sunday morning:

1)  Since 1960, who is the only pitcher to drive in 6 runs in a game without hitting a HR?

2)  Name 3 HOF'ers who made their ML debut as a pitcher and then appeared in over 2000 more games at another single position.

3)  Who is the only player to start over 100 games at 1B, 2B, 3B and SS in his career?

No, gamblin' Hal only appeared in one game as a pitcher.  Two years after he made his ML debut.

No, Chase as the uber utility guy in #3.

Musial was a pitcher but not in MLB, I think.

My bad.  Not Chase, he was almost exclusively a first sacker, and a pretty good one.  The answer to #3 is more recent.

Stan the Man pitched in one game in the middle of his career but you're are correct in that he was a pitcher in the minors.

Great 1B but played some games at 2B. I was guessing (badly) at the other positions.

WOO! HOO!  Very nicely done my friend.  At first a SS with the Braves, he started in over 100 games as a 2B and 1B with Houston and over 100 games at 3B with the Reds in '72 and '73.

George Sisler started as a pitcher, I believe.

The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Roger Bresnahan is the other.  (I admit, I had to look that one up).

Good guess, but he fell just short of 2000 games an another position. He appeared in 1971 as a first baseman.

Oh, I thought you meant 2,000 games simply as a position player, not at one *single* position.  This is gonna be hard.

Ding! Ding!  See, that wasn't so hard.  Burkett debuted as a pitcher for the Giants and then went on to what would become a HOF career as an OF for the Spiders, Cardinals and Browns.

One to go...

Micah Owings did it in 2007, but he hit two home runs.  I could have swore he was the only pitcher to drive in 6 runs since 1960.

It's REALLY hard!  LOL

There are lots of HOFers who pitched, it was fairly common in the early days for the star players to play many positions, including pitcher.  But that means it's hard to get 2000 games at one position.

Tony Cloninger set the record of 9 RBI in 1966. Two salamis and a single rib.

Aww... looking it up spoils the fun. I was about to post that Jim would probably know, because it's a guy who pitched for his two favorite teams.

That's the man.  Had a nice little career and a good World Series in 1971 with the Bucs.  Mostly a SP for Houston, I think he found his niche as a reliever.  Also made an All Star team.  He was involved in the Johnny Edwards deal and was later traded for Phil Garner.

Intresting thing about his 6 RBI, the same three runners (Staub, Aspromonte and Ron Brand) scored on Giusti's two bases clearing doubles.

The only unanswered question is the 3rd HOF'er who debuted as a pitcher and went on to play in over 2ooo games at another position.  He was an AL OFer with a certain "mystery" to his career.

That's him.  Made his ML debut on the mound for the 1915 Senators but was later switched to the OF.  Came up something like 13 hits shy of 3000.  If he had made the big leagues before he was 26 he may have ended up with close to 4000 hits.

Nice work.

Excellent. Never would've gotten it without the "mystery" hint.
